Heavy rain poured through a Las Vegas casinos on Thursday night, only two weeks after flash floods had left the iconic Strip under water. The National Weather Service (NWS) Las Vegas issued a warning on the evening of August 11, cautioning residents of the Las Vegas Valley against heavy rain, nuisance flooding, gusty winds and frequent lightning. According to the agency, LAS Airport officially picked up 0.58 inches of rainfall with last night's downpour, bringing this year's monsoon season rainfall total to 1.28 feet—a record for the city. The total amount of rainfall fallen so far this year makes this monsoon season the wettest since September 11, 2012. A New Jersey man who pled guilty in 2019 for his role in a GoFundMe scam that raised over $400,000 by tricking donors into thinking they were donating money to a homeless veteran has been sentenced to five years in state prison, according to officials. Mark D'Amico, 43, has also been ordered to make full restitution to GoFundMe, according to a press release from the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office. NBC News has reached out to an attorney for D'Amico. D'Amico and his then-girlfriend, Katelyn McClure, created a GoFundMe account in 2017 after she said she ran out of gas near a Philadelphia interstate and bumped into Johnny Bobbitt, a homeless veteran who used his last $20 to pay for her fuel. Man leads cops on foot chase after allegedly crashing ambulance, firetruck
A man led police on a chase that spanned the late hours of August 6 into the early hours of August 7 in Alabama after he allegedly stole and crashed three vehicles, two of which were an ambulance and a volunteer fire truck. The Limestone County Sheriff's Office said in a statement published on Facebook that Tyrek Dequavyious Hayes, 30, faces multiple charges, including three counts of theft, attempting to elude law enforcement and kidnapping. An EMT was in the ambulance when Hayes reportedly hijacked it. According to the law information website FindLaw , if an individual intentionally flees from law enforcement, they may be charged with a misdemeanor unless the attempt to elude results in a death or an injury to an innocent bystander. In that case, the individual may be faced with a felony. Charles Hensley, 68, has been charged with 11 counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft for his alleged activities, which involved using the Desilu name to dupe investors into giving him money to shell corporations. The indictment stemmed from an investigation into Hensley’s businesses from the FBI and the IRS. Extraordinary footage shows a fire tornado ripping through Los Angeles County in Gorman on Wednesday. Firefighters were dispatched to a wildfire, dubbed the Sam Fire, at 4:07 p.m. Arriving on the scene, Los Angeles County Fire Department said an estimated four acres was ablaze, which they later categorized as a second-alarm brush fire. Video published by local news site KTLA shows large quantities of air being sucked into a vortex-like fire tornado. Filmed by helicopter, a man can be heard describing the fire tornado as "the biggest one I've ever seen." Fire tornadoes, also known as fire whirls, can occur when intense, rising heat mixes with powerful winds. This results in the fire spinning upwards, where it drags in more gas and debris as fuel. A man is recovering after bloody encounter with a shark left him with a punctured artery. Bryan Olivares, 33, also suffered a sliced tendon when he came into contact with the sea predator on Daytona Beach on Monday, July 25. The beach-goer was jumping in the waves at the time and didn't notice anything was wrong until he felt the creature bump into him. After feeling something that felt like a burning sensation and then a slice, he managed to make it back to shore before passing out and was taken to hospital.
