POLITICS 07/17/2018 05:45 pm ET Updated 0 minutes ago The billionaire “climate hero” has given nearly $90,000 to a party whose members largely dismiss climate science. By Chris D'Angelo and Alexander C. Kaufman Billionaire tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, a man widely hailed as a world leader in the fight to combat climate change, has doled out nearly 7 times as much cash to Republican campaigns and political committees this election cycle as he has to Democratic ones. Since the start of 2017, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has personally contributed $88,900 to Republicans, while he gave those on the other side of the aisle $13,300, according to a HuffPost review of Federal Election Commission data. Musk came under fire this week after Salon first reported that he’d donated $38,900 to Protect the House, a GOP political action committee focused on maintaining Republican control of the House. The June contributions puts him among the PAC’s top … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Has Donated Nearly 7 Times As Much To Republicans This Cycle

Elon Musk acknowledged Sunday that Tesla, at its current production rate, would “lose money and die” if it sold Model 3 mass-market sedans at the promised price of $35,000. Despite Tesla’s Model 3 website still stating that it “achieves 220 miles of range while starting at only $35,000 before incentives;” CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to acknowledge that the company would go bankrupt if it tried to ship starting price units before reaching a minimum production rate above 5,000 units per week. Tesla began taking $1,000 reservations in March 2016 for its first mid-size all-electric-vehicle with a basic battery range of 215 miles. Within a week, the Tesla announced it had over 325,000 paid reservations. A year later, the number of paid Model 3 deposits indicated about 600,000 reservations. Musk tweeted just before Tesla’s July 28, 2017 “Handover Party” for the first 30 Model 3 vehicles that he was confident the company … [Read more...] about Musk: Tesla Selling $35K Model 3 Would ‘Lose Money and Die’
Hayley Tsukayama, The Washington Post Published 2:33 pm, Thursday, June 28, 2018 OpenAI made headlines last year when it proved a bot could beat a professional gamer head-to-head at one of the world's most complex video games. But it had one more gaming goal to conquer - to beat a professional team of five. Now, after proving the bot can beat teams that rank in the top 1 percent of amateur players for its game of choice, OpenAI will get its chance to shine at the International, one of the world's most established video game tournaments. The tournament is where the researchers hope to showcase how far its bot has come in terms of its ability to control its own team of five characters as well as any team of five humans can. While machines have beaten humans at games - from IBM computer Deep Blue's chess victory in 1997 to Google's bot toppling Go champion Lee Sedol in 2016 - each game has offered a new challenge for artificial intelligence to solve. With Dota 2, the game … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s OpenAI bot beat a human at video games last year. Now it will take on five at once.
Avi Selk, The Washington Post Published 6:34 am PDT, Monday, July 16, 2018 It has been five days since a dozen boys were rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand, and five days since Elon Musk has been wandering in a Twitter labyrinth of his own making. The Silicon Valley engineer and billionaire was briefly seen in Thailand last week, hauling a miniature submarine to the mouth of the cave just before an international dive team rescued the boys without it. Since then, he has been arguing with people who accuse him of shoehorning himself into the drama and imagining hypotheticals in which rescuers had not deemed his hastily built submarine unnecessary and impractical. This has, inevitably, led Musk into public arguments people who actually participated in the rescue operation - a rhetorical war that he drastically escalated on Sunday, when he called one of the cave explorers a "pedo," prompting the explorer to consider a lawsuit. Geoffrey A. Fowler, The Washington Post Published 6:44 pm PST, Tuesday, December 18, 2018 HAWTHORNE, Calif. - For Elon Musk's very difficult year, perhaps there's a light at the end of the tunnel. On Tuesday night in a Los Angeles suburb, the billionaire inventor and beleaguered CEO of Tesla Motors is expected to unveil his latest project: a test of a tunnel system he believes is the answer to "soul-destroying" traffic congestion. Musk is expected to open the short tunnel made by his Boring Company from a site at the headquarters of SpaceX, another Musk enterprise. The event, starting at 8 p.m. Pacific Time and live-streamed from the Boring website, is expected to be part amusement park ride and part product launch pep rally. Rarely does the opening of a new subway or train line garner so much attention, but few have Musk's particular knack at PR. Musk built anticipation for his tunnel project by teasing few details of how it works and what kind of vehicle will carry … [Read more...] about Elon Musk’s Boring Company is about to open its first tunnel
