How soon after waking up do you check your phone? Do you compulsively refresh your Twitter feed? Can you find your way around without Google Maps? There are many obvious and tactile ways in which Silicon Valley has its hooks in our everyday lives. And as we see Big Tech face increased scrutiny, people are becoming more conscious of their interactions with their products: limiting screen time, quitting Facebook, shopping locally. But fully divorcing yourself from these companies is a lot harder than you may think, as journalist Kashmir Hill discovered. Because besides our obvious interactions with Big Tech, there are many more invisible ways these products and innovations touch our lives. This is Kashmir’s story of what happens when you shine a light on those unseen encounters. KASHMIR HILL: I turn off my phone at night, like at 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. I just turn it off, which I used to never do. My phone would be on until the battery died. And that would be a very traumatic event. … [Read more...] about Why Is This Happening? How to block Big Tech with Kashmir Hill ǀ View

HOLLYWOOD has dramatised the chilling and horrific religious ceremony of exorcisms - but real life versions often make international headlines. We explain what they are why the Catholic Church performs them. What is an exorcism? The idea that demons exist and can possess people is one of the most widely-held religious beliefs in the world. Most religions claim humans can be invaded by demonic spirits and offer exorcisms to cast out them out. The Vatican first issued official guidelines on exorcism in 1614 and revised them in 1999. The changes state that “the person who claims to be possessed must be evaluated by doctors to rule out a mental or physical illness". Along with a handful of Vatican-sanctioned exorcists, there are hundreds of self-styled exorcists around the world. Catholic Church law requires that every diocese has at least one specially-trained priest who can perform exorcisms, although the Vatican says demonic possession is very rare and the majority of cases turn … [Read more...] about What are exorcisms, why does the Catholic Church do them, who was Anneliese Michel and what’s the story behind The Exorcist?
A PRIVATE search for Emiliano Sala has been launched after Lionel Messi and a host of football stars helped raise £300,000 for a rescue mission. Despite hopes being raised following the discovery of plane wreckage on a Rotterdam beach, officials have confirmed it was NOT from Sala's aircraft. Here's what we know so far. What caused the plane crash? On January 23, aviation experts exclusively told The Sun how a build up of ice on the wings of the aircraft carrying Emiliano Sala could have been the cause of the crash. Sala sent WhatsApp messages to his friends as the plane lurched in rough conditions, saying the plane “looks like it’s going to fall apart”. One aviation expert claimed: "There are reports that the footballer was texting saying the aircraft is shaking and breaking up are classic signs of icing on the wings. “The pilot is most likely wrestling with a stall at 2,300ft. “It is likely, though, that the aircraft hit the water in … [Read more...] about Why did Emiliano Sala’s plane crash and is the search still on?
Philip Bump, The Washington Post Published 7:33 am PST, Tuesday, January 8, 2019 White House press secretary Sarah Sanders was direct when arguing to Fox News' Chris Wallace on Sunday that a wall was needed on the border with Mexico to prevent terrorists from entering the country. "We know that roughly, nearly 4,000 known or suspected terrorists come into our country illegally," Sanders said, "and we know that our most vulnerable point of entry is at our southern border." Wallace pushed back: Wasn't that 4,000 figure including people detained at airports? Well, sure, Sanders admitted, but the southwest border was still the most vulnerable point. At least politically. President Donald Trump's insistence that funding be blocked for several government departments until Congress funds a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border has given new urgency to the administration's claims about a dire situation in the region - including presenting as accurate numbers like that one about 4,000 … [Read more...] about How the administration’s numbers about dangers on the border stack up
