(AP) — A former “Dances With Wolves” actor accused of sexually abusing Indigenous girls and women for two decades in multiple states has been charged in Nevada for crimes that prosecutors said occurred in the Las Vegas-area starting in 2012. Nathan Chasing Horse, 46, was formally charged Monday morning during a brief appearance in a North Las Vegas courtroom full of his friends and relatives who had hoped to see him released on bail. But a judge postponed hearing arguments about his custody status until Wednesday to give Chasing Horse's new California-based attorney, Alexandra Kazaria, additional time to obtain permission from the State Bar of Nevada to represent him in the case. Nevada law requires prosecutors to present convincing evidence that a defendant should remain in custody. The Rise and Fall of America’s Environmentalist Underground
To hear more audio stories from publications like The New York Times, download Audm for iPhone or Android . Late one summer evening in 2018, an American citizen named Joseph Mahmoud Dibee was sitting in José Martí International Airport in Havana, Cuba — trying, unsuccessfully, to sleep — when he was approached by three men. Dibee, a civil engineer, was in Havana on a layover. After a long business trip in Ecuador, he was heading home to Russia, where he lived with his wife and stepson. The men demanded his passport, then led him out of the terminal and into a waiting sedan. Dibee asked where they were going, but got no response. Sandwiched between his captors, he was driven miles through the night before finally arriving at what appeared to be a jail. For the next three days, Dibee would claim in a subsequent court filing, he was imprisoned without explanation and, in effect, tortured. His small concrete cell was open to the elements; during the day, the cage baked. As … [Read more...] about The Rise and Fall of America’s Environmentalist Underground
Ambidexterity: The Key to an Undisruptable C-suite
Disruption is inevitable in every business, often driven by changes in the global environment like COVID, recession, technology or wars, resulting in a spiraling, existential crisis for a company. Although these disruptions are highly publicized, what doesn't get sufficient attention is the significant role that management plays in determining the outcome of the crisis. When faced with the inevitable struggles of operating in a complex global economy, many organizations fail to adapt during these crises and end up exiting their business by merging or selling their company. One's ability to steer their organization out of the crisis becomes either an entry in the list of trials to overcome and an inspiring lesson for the next generation or the crisis that sinks the ship. For a company to meet the ever-increasing demands of the marketplace and survive the inevitable downturns, it's imperative the management team has capabilities suited for both normal and crisis times. In other … [Read more...] about Ambidexterity: The Key to an Undisruptable C-suite
Musk Pledged to Cleanse Twitter of Child Abuse Content. It’s Been Rough Going.
Over 120,000 views of a video showing a boy being sexually assaulted. A recommendation engine suggesting that a user follow content related to exploited children. Users continually posting abusive material, delays in taking it down when it is detected and friction with organizations that police it. All since Elon Musk declared that “removing child exploitation is priority #1” in a tweet in late November. Under Mr. Musk’s ownership, Twitter’s head of safety, Ella Irwin, said she had been moving rapidly to combat child sexual abuse material, which was prevalent on the site — as it is on most tech platforms — under the previous owners. “Twitter 2.0” will be different, the company promised. But a review by The New York Times found that the imagery, commonly known as child pornography, persisted on the platform, including widely circulated material that the authorities consider the easiest to detect and eliminate. After Mr. Musk took the reins in late October, … [Read more...] about Musk Pledged to Cleanse Twitter of Child Abuse Content. It’s Been Rough Going.
A Machine Crushed Us at Pokémon
For a brief moment, we could taste victory. On the first turn of our online Pokémon battle against the player Athena2023, our Aegislash dealt some serious damage to Athena2023’s Gengar . One more blow like that, and Gengar, a little purple ghost with a sinister grin, would be toast. But Athena2023 had other ideas. Before we could make another move, Gengar blew away Aegislash, a levitating Pokémon with the appearance of a zoomorphic sword and shield, with a single attack. The point of a battle is to use your team of six Pokémon to knock out all six of your opponent’s, and we were losing fast. Athena2023 sent out a Lunala , a demonic purple-and-white bird with scythes for wings, which proceeded to eviscerate three straight Pokémon with an attack called Moongeist Beam. By turn 13, we had lost four of our Pokémon and defeated exactly zero of Athena2023’s. Such a pathetic showing might ordinarily elicit a smirk or some pity from an opposing player. But Athena2023 is not capable of … [Read more...] about A Machine Crushed Us at Pokémon
NASA’s $247.5 Million Supersonic Passenger Jet to Launch in 2021
NASA's new "quiet" supersonic plane—which could make Concorde-style supersonic flights, allowing passengers to fly faster than the speed of sound a reality—has received a green light for construction. The X-59 Quiet SuperSonic Technology (QueSST) aircraft got its final approval for assembly following a major project review known as Key Decision Point-D (KDP-D), putting the plane on track for construction by 2020 and its first flight in 2021, NASA announced this week. "With the completion of KDP-D we've shown the project is on schedule, it's well planned and on track. We have everything in place to continue this historic research mission for the nation's air-traveling public," Bob Pearce, NASA's Associate Administrator for Aeronautics, said in a statement. The new aircraft is designed to reduce the loudness of the deafening sonic boom noise normally associated with superfast planes to "that of a gentle thump, if it is heard at all," NASA said. Its construction will be managed … [Read more...] about NASA’s $247.5 Million Supersonic Passenger Jet to Launch in 2021
Who Is New AGT Host, Terry Crews?
Actor Terry Crews graced America's Got Talent stage Monday night as the talent show's newest host, and while he might be new to some viewers, it's far from the first time he's been on the screen.
