A 21-year-old Kannada small screen actor died while undergoing a fat reduction surgery at a private hospital in Bengaluru on Monday. V. Chethana, a resident of Abbigere and daughter of K. Varadaraju, was admitted to Dr. Shetty’s Cosmetic Centre in Rajajinagar for the surgery on Monday. Her family has alleged that she died due to a botched-up procedure. However, the doctor, who performed the procedure, denied that there was any negligence, and said the actor developed fat embolism resulting in pulmonary edema soon after the three-hour procedure. Based on a complaint filed by Mr. Varadaraju, the Subramanyanagar police on Tuesday registered a case under section 174 C of the Cr.PC and are awaiting the post-mortem report. “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
The very last bill to be voted on in Colorado’s 2022 legislative session was designed to make sure the state never lets another child experience what Lorenzo Montoyawent through. Montoya was 14 years old in 2000 when he was taken into questioning by Denver police detectives who suspected him in the killing of a Skinner Middle School teacher named Emily Johnson. He didn’t kill her . Again and again, that’s what he told detectives. But over a period of hours, first with Montoya’s mom present and later alone with the child, the police planted a narrative in the child’s mind. They claimed they’d already retrieved fingerprints, shoe prints and hair samples to back it up. Confused and under enormous pressure, Montoya relented and gave a coerced confession. He was convicted of murder and spent the rest of his childhood and most of his 20s incarcerated, before being exonerated in 2014. It is legal in Colorado and all states but Oregon, Illinois and Utah for police to lie to … [Read more...] about “Women of color lead and it’s a problem”: How Colorado’s last bill of 2022 died
“I hope y’all get aids and die”: County candidates targets of threatening texts
Candidates involved in county and city-level elections have recently been subjected to numerous violent, racist, homophobic and intimidating text messages, the North Carolina Board of Elections confirmed. The threatening messages were targeted toward the Rev. Albert Reddick, who is running for Chatham County commissioner, and Nick Gallardo, who is running for mayor of Siler City. The board told WRAL News that it is investigating the messages. Some of the messages sent to Reddick, who is Black, featured racist language and imagery. In one instance, the candidate received a photo of a gorilla with its neck tied in a noose. He went to authorities with the messages and filed a report with the Siler City Police Department. "I was really stunned in terms of the sickness behind it and trying to grapple with it," Reddick said. "After thought and prayer and deliberation, we decided to file a complaint. We need to speak to it and let them know we are not afraid of them, but we are … [Read more...] about “I hope y’all get aids and die”: County candidates targets of threatening texts
Australian Shepherd becomes best buddies with cat whose owner died
The stereotypes about cats and dogs are well documented, from the popular phrase " fighting like cats and dogs ," to portrayals in cartoons and movies. But this cat and dog pair are bucking the trend. Eight-year-old shorthair cat Nikita and 5-year-old Australian Shepherd dog Bleu have been best buddies for almost five years. Wrestling, playing, and cuddling the day away together. Living with their owners Alene Husson and her husband Gerry in Indian Lake, New York, Husson told us the story of these unusual friends. "After our last Australian Shepherd died, we decided to get a cat because they're so much easier to take care of," she explained. "But we found that even though the cat was wonderful it just didn't fulfill the need for a dog. So we decided to get Bleu." The Animal Humane Society reports that: "Despite the stereotype, many dogs and cats learn to live together peacefully," they advise: "Be patient and take the introduction process slowly, but know that whether or not … [Read more...] about Australian Shepherd becomes best buddies with cat whose owner died
Did legendary poet Lord Byron have anorexia?
Lord Byron, the 18th-century, Romantic era poet, was known as much for his flamboyant affairs, as he was for his literary genius. However, it is only in the past decade, that details of his health — his eating disorder, anorexia, in particular — are being talked about. This is what acclaimed British author Antony Peattie has been researching for the past 14 years. The result is a book, The Private Life of Lord Byron , set to be published soon. On his India tour, he narrated what he learnt about Lord Bryon’s past that may have led to him developing the disorder. Edited excerpts: What did you discover about Lord Byron’s condition of anorexia? 1873 was when anorexia was first recognised by the medical profession, 49 years after Byron’s death. His own condition was diagnosed retrospectively in 1982. But going through his correspondences and biographies now suggests that he was severely anorexic. His Italian lover, countess Teresa Guiccioli (who was with him during the period that … [Read more...] about Did legendary poet Lord Byron have anorexia?
Thought and action: On Cong’s three-day Chintan Shivir
The three-day Nav Sankalp Chintan Shivir of the Congress in Udaipur has charted an action plan for its revival. The proof will be in its implementation, but at a minimum it acknowledges the party’s shortcomings. The party plans to give more opportunities to the youth, limit dynastic politics with a ‘one family, one ticket’ rule, and have a new deal for socially weaker groups such as the Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and the minorities. In a major deviation from its earlier position, the Congress is now backing sub-quotas for SCs, STs and Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in the women’s reservation Bill that has been hanging fire for long. A Social Justice Advisory Council is to advise the Congress president on issues regarding socially weaker groups. Half of the party posts are to be filled with people under the age of 50, a principle that will be applied in the selection of candidates too. Other measures announced include a Public Insight Committee to gather feedback on … [Read more...] about Thought and action: On Cong’s three-day Chintan Shivir
A player of 60s vintage who showed us what 2020s might be like
It is impossible to be objective about death. If it involves an accident that ends a sportsman’s life prematurely, you think about his family; then you ask, did he live up to potential? That question can seldom be answered in the positive, for it is human nature to believe that the next event will be the determining one, the next assignment will establish the legacy. Those who play sport at the highest level are judged by performance and not on potential. Once a career is over, there is no room for could-have-beens. Whatever problems the late Shane Warne had outside the sport, he will always count as one of the all-time greats, his 708 Test wickets testimony to that. Did he live up to potential? It doesn’t matter. What we know is good enough to guarantee him a place among the finest. Andrew Symonds was a cricketer of 1960s vintage who played in the 2000s and showed us what the 2020s might be like. He was a throwback to an age where the sport wasn’t an all-consuming task-master, … [Read more...] about A player of 60s vintage who showed us what 2020s might be like

Why Indians Should Be Allowed to Question the ‘Great Muslim Conqueror’ Theory of History
Where do babies come from? We understand if a number of parents have difficulty answering this question when their kids ask them. That is why we have the education system. But what do you do when educators, academics, intellectuals and media have difficulty answering basic questions? Where does Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb come from? Open the doors of Gyanvapi mosque and let everyone see. No, you can’t look inside Gyanvapi mosque. There is this or that plea pending in the Supreme Court, and various other courts, to stop the videography. Then there is the supposed idea of India, something called places of worship act, this act or that act. If the Church could come back and have that argument with Galileo all over again, they would certainly appreciate our zeal to make facts illegal. You cannot ban history on the basis of ideology. But we have been trying exactly that. In the seven decades since independence, we have served ourselves with an invented version of history that can only be seen … [Read more...] about Why Indians Should Be Allowed to Question the ‘Great Muslim Conqueror’ Theory of History

The Athens court meted out the toughest punishment it could for Anagnostopoulos. In addition to life in prison he was handed an extra eleven years and six months in prison for the brutal murder of the couples pet husky Roxy and deliberately perverting the course of justice.
