Prince Charles' palace allies played an "unpleasant game of one-upmanship" with Queen Elizabeth II 's staff in the days after Princess Diana's death, according to a new biography. Andrew Morton caused a political storm in the 1990s when his book Diana: Her True Story revealed Charles' affair with Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, for the first time. Now he has written a new book, The Queen , which details how courtiers loyal to the Prince of Wales attempted to shield the future king from the public's wrath. The book quotes an official present with the royals in the week after Diana's death, who reportedly said: "One of the most dangerous things which took place during those fraught days was that the two palaces were totally at odds with each other." Morton wrote: "In the early stages, the prince's spin doctors at St James's Palace tried to portray Charles as decisive and democratic while painting all the Queen's men as dithering, delaying and hiding behind precedent … [Read more...] about Prince Charles allies accused of briefing against Queen after Diana’s death

Woman receives mysterious decades-old letters, confusing even post office
A New York woman was left puzzled after she received several mysterious postcards written by her late mother and dated back to 1960. In early April, Carol Hover of Hornell, New York, received a postcard in the mail dated August 30, 1960. "The first thing I noticed was my mother's handwriting," Hover told WETM . "She passed away back in 2014. I found that it was postmarked from Canada in August of 1960. So, they would have been on their honeymoon." At first, Hover thought this card was a strange fluke in the system, but then she received more postcards. Although it's hard to measure, it is estimated that less than three percent of mail gets lost in the United States. If a package or letter is recovered after a search request is filed, the U.S. Postal Service will resend the mail. For some packages, the shipping label might have fallen off during the shipment process or someone used an incorrect address so it was undeliverable. Other instances include bad weather rubbing … [Read more...] about Woman receives mysterious decades-old letters, confusing even post office

Giving up the privilege to immunity
Choi Hyun-ju The author is a life and economic news team reporter of the JoongAng Ilbo. In England, where the parliamentary system was developed early, the biggest friction between the king and the aristocrats was taxes. In June 1215, King John signed the Magna Carta, or the Great Charter, which is called the “Bible of the British Constitution.” It states that taxes such as military service payment and special subsidy tax cannot be collected without the approval of the general meeting of the aristocrats. It is the cornerstone of taxation according to national law. Successive kings did not properly follow this, and after Elizabeth I, the symbol of absolute monarchy, died unmarried in 1603, a distant relative, King James, ascended to the throne. The aristocrats ignored him for his lack of legitimacy. King James countered by arresting and imprisoning nobles for various reasons. The aristocrats strongly resisted and enacted the parliamentary immunity act. The law does not allow … [Read more...] about Giving up the privilege to immunity

No10 defend Tory Rachel Maclean’s comments about Brits working more hours or moving jobs
Downing Street today defended a top Tory who suggested Brits could work more hours or move to a better-paying job to cope with rising bills. Minister Rachel Maclean provoked a backlash when she said it could be a “long-term” plan to “make sure people are able to protect themselves better” in the cost-of-living crisis. Ms Maclean said she was not "suggesting for one moment" that such an option would work for everyone, adding: "It may be right for some people.” But Labour shadow cabinet minister Ian Murray said the "ludicrous" advice “sounds like the Norman Tebbit 'get on your bike' instructions from the 1980s.” Lib Dem Wendy Chamberlain added: "So the Conservatives' answer to the cost-of-living emergency is that people should just earn more? This shows just how out of touch they truly are.” Today Downing Street suggested critics were trying to “twist” Ms Maclean’s words - as she came out fighting saying she’d been ‘misrepresented’. Boris Johnson ’s spokesman said: “I … [Read more...] about No10 defend Tory Rachel Maclean’s comments about Brits working more hours or moving jobs
