A bus stop jam-packed with Jayan info
At a particular spot on the Thrissur-Mannuthy Bypass junction, passersby and motorists slow down and take a look. Some pause and read thoroughly. Many are bent on taking selfies. The centre of attraction is a bus stop, a memorial to Jayan, arguably Malayalam cinema’s first action hero. The facility, named ‘Jayatharakam,’ was built by the All Kerala Jayan Memorial Samskarika Vedi and was opened on August 6. Since then it has been attracting Jayan fans from across the State. Like a Wiki page The bus stop, built at ₹2.5 lakh, is almost like a Wikipedia page of the actor. Photos from 119 films (three are unreleased) featuring him are on display. There are also descriptions of the films which he was working on at the time of his death. They had to be shelved. Even 42 years after the untimely death of the actor, the characters portrayed by him are still alive in the minds of people, say Jayan Memorial Samskarika Vedi members. His unique dialogue delivery, often imitated but poorly … [Read more...] about A bus stop jam-packed with Jayan info
Cooking lutenitsa: a recipe and a love story
The Israeli-born chef Alon Shaya who, along with his wife Emily, helms the wildly popular Denver restaurant Safta, makes a mean hummus. He’s much loved for his puffy pita that, like manna from heaven, appear at Safta’s tables unbidden and unceasingly. But what he cooks best are memories. “Lots of what you have (on the menu at Safta),” he said during a recent dinner there, “has sentimental value for me.” Such is the recipe here for lutenitsa, a mix of roasted eggplant, sweet red peppers and tomatoes often made by Matilda, his grandmother (“safta,” in Hebrew). The “aroma of peppers and eggplant charring over an open flame,” Shaya writes in his cookbook, “Shaya” (Borzoi, Alfred Knopf, 2018), “is what made me fall in love with food.” “What we do (at Safta),” he says, “is re-imagine, perhaps make a twist on, the simple things I ate when I was younger. “Food is tied to memory,” he adds. In his cooking, Shaya inextricably ties food to flavor, too. You will taste wonder in a dish … [Read more...] about Cooking lutenitsa: a recipe and a love story
SF’s Hang Ah Tea Room is America’s first dim sum restaurant, with 102 years of stories to tell
Locals don't often go to Hang Ah Tea Room, the oldest dim sum restaurant in America — but they should. Part of the reason is that it’s hidden in an obscure alleyway in Chinatown, away from the more familiar streets in the neighborhood. Part of it is that any place that can be called the oldest of its kind is often a tourist trap. But the restaurant, a legacy business that is more than a century old, has plenty to offer for locals and tourists alike. Look for the giant arrow To find Hang Ah, follow the signage along a small alleyway called Pagoda Place. You won’t be able to miss it: There’s a huge sign painted on the side of the first building that lines the corridor, with a giant arrow pointing at the entrance. The restaurant belies its historic status with its casual, homey atmosphere. Inside the dining room, red vinyl-upholstered chairs and dark wooden tables sit atop cream tiles. There may not be tablecloths, but there is a curated mix of vintage Chinatown and San … [Read more...] about SF’s Hang Ah Tea Room is America’s first dim sum restaurant, with 102 years of stories to tell

LinkedIn Influencer Takes A Sly Dig At CEO Who Posted Crying Selfie After Laying Off Staff
The CEO of HyperSocial, Braden Wallake, garnered tons of criticism after a LinkedIn post about laying off staff was deemed disingenuous by many. Wallake posted a photo of himself crying with a post on how a few employees had to be laid off from his company after he decided to stop selling their main services. Now, taking a jibe at him, a LinkedIn influencer who goes by the name Drew, posted an image of himself crying. In the caption, he wrote, “I thought for at least a few minutes whether I should share this or not. No layoffs to announce… but Taco Tuesday was a bad choice.” He uploaded the image using hashtag “#vulnerabilities.” “So are you sweaty? Just confused at why we should perpetuate crying on linkedin for reasons that don’t make sense. I feel like this is 2x bad. Men should cry and have feelings, but also actually exhibit empathy and EQ. And also the more this happens the more that guy gets attention where it should not go.
