WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch has been elected to serve as a trustee of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Gorsuch was nominated to the high court by President Donald Trump and took his seat in April 2017. He previously served on the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and at the U.S. Department of Justice as principal deputy associate attorney general. Colonial Williamsburg is the world's largest living history museum. In a statement released by the foundation, Gorsuch said Colonial Williamsburg is a place where people can reconnect with our nation's founding principles "on the very ground where they were forged." A Gloucester man now faces a federal weapons charge in connection with a pipe bomb that exploded in October near Colonial Williamsburg, where he worked.Stephen James Powers, 30, made his first appearance Friday afternoon in U.S. District Court in Norfolk. He will be held in jail until a detention hearing set for Tuesday.Prosecutors in Williamsburg dropped three state charges Thursday in deference to the federal case.If convicted, Powers faces up to 10 years in prison. The pipe bomb exploded about 5 p.m. Oct. 19 in a parking lot. But the Williamsburg Police Department started looking into Powers a week earlier after an incident at a Colonial Williamsburg maintenance office, according to court documents obtained by the Daily Press.The office is located below the Chico’s clothing store in the 400 block of W. A Japanese hotel company appears ready to build a 615-room hotel near Union Station, as the economy chain makes its long-planned arrival in the U.S.Toyoko Inn Co. on Wednesday secured a construction permit for the surface parking lot at 320 S. Clinton St. The permit comes more than a decade after the Tokyo-based company bought the site and about eight years after the first public meeting on the development.Delays on the project could actually work in Toyoko Inn’s favor since there are now several large developments happening nearby.A more than $1 billion redevelopment and addition to Union Station is planned immediately northeast of Toyoko Inn’s site.
