World Russia Japan Vladimir Putin Shinzo Abe Russia wants to strike a deal with Japan to build a 28-mile bridge between the two countries that could link Moscow to Tokyo by land and rail. The project has repeatedly come up in discussions between officials from the two countries. During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s previous term, the Kremlin greatly intensified its outreach to the world’s third biggest economy. Putin reignited speculation about the long-rumored project last year, when he announced that a land link between Russia and Japan would have “planetary” significance. Tokyo Sarin Attack: Japan Executes Final Six Members of Doomsday Cult
World The remaining members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult have been executed in Japan, 23 years since they helped launch a sarin attack on the Tokyo subway system. The six men were all hanged Thursday, the Japan Times reported. Seven other cult members, including leader Shoko Asahara, were executed earlier this month. “The pain and anguish of the people who were killed and their families as well as of the survivors left with disabilities, was unimaginable,” Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa told reporters at a press conference. WorldSuper Typhoon Jebi, a Category 5 storm that’s become the world’s most powerful in 2018, is threatening Japan early next week, with threats to major cities Kyoto, Kobe, and Tokyo.Japan’s main island, Honsho, home to the country’s largest cities, is at risk for up to a foot of rain from Typhoon Jebi, according to the forecast updates. "Rainfall flooding, high winds, battering waves and coastal flooding are expected as Jebi pushes ashore around Tuesday, local time," according to The Weather Channel.Typhoon Jebi’s path and track update suggests the storm will likely aprroach Japan on Monday or early Tuesday next week, but it won’t be at current strength. Japan Heatwave Kills 44 in Just Two Weeks With No Relief In Sight
World Japan heatwave Experts have warned that thousands of people could die in a heatwave in Japan which is blistering under record temperatures. The mercury hit a record 41.1 degrees Celsius (106 Fahrenheit) on Sunday in Kumagaya, north-west of Tokyo, in what was the highest temperature for the country since records began in 1896, and around 12 degrees hotter for this time of year. Koyodo News agency reported that at least 44 people have died since July 9 as the Japanese capital sweltered in 38 C (100 F) heat on Monday, with temperatures in the mid-30s forecast for most of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu islands. Among the dead was a six-year-old boy who collapsed after a field trip. Thousands have also been taken to hospital, Reuters reported with officials saying there had been more than 3,000 emergency calls in 24 hours and more than 12,000 people have been hospitalized from heat-related issues so far in July.
