“I am Jane Doe #9 in the R.Kelly trial—his sentence means I didn’t suffer in vain”
I am Jane Doe #9. I am forever known in court documents as Jane Doe #9, and no one can take that away from me. It validates me and my story. But I didn't sleep much the night before June 29, the day of R. Kelly's sentencing for racketeering and sex trafficking crimes. It had taken all day to get from Miami, where I live, to New York the day before, and the following morning, I was dreading getting up. I was anxious and nervous because I didn't know what to expect; when I met with federal agents downstairs at the hotel, it started to feel really real for me. I arrived at the federal court in Brooklyn just before 10.30am on June 29 and was actually dropped off around the back because there were so many paparazzi, reporters and his supporters outside. Myself and the other survivors were nervous, because you don't know what to expect; he had filed motions to get an acquittal or a new trial, but U.S. District Judge Ann M. Donnelly quickly struck those down. I believe I was the third … [Read more...] about “I am Jane Doe #9 in the R.Kelly trial—his sentence means I didn’t suffer in vain”

British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed
Historic British-era Patna District Magistrate's office building, part of the centuries-old Collectorate campus, which was featured in key scenes in Oscar-winning film 'Gandhi' has been demolished, sending a wave of grief among heritage lovers and Gandhians. Bulldozers gnawed at the elegant two-storey main Patna Collectorate building, situated on the banks of the river Ganga, a couple of days ago, reducing it to a skeletal state. The building was felled as part of the redevelopment project of the Bihar government. On Wednesday, labourers carried away bricks from the mountains of rubble that lay deposited next to what remained of the old building, which once was the seat of the district administration and was said to have been constructed in the early 20th century. The building was also adorned with an ornate iron-made spiral staircase mounted on its western facade. Heritage lovers of the city had earlier appealed to the authorities to rescue its historical artefacts, such as … [Read more...] about British-era Patna DM office building shown in ‘Gandhi’ razed

Manipur: Six Killed, Dozens Missing as Massive Landslide Blocks River’s Flow
At least eight people were killed and over 70 others went missing after a massive landslide occurred at a railway construction site in Manipur’s Noney district, officials said on Thursday. The incident took place at Tupul yard railway construction camp on Wednesday night. Eight bodies have been retrieved so far, including those of seven Territorial Army personnel, they said, adding, rescue operations are underway. Around 72 people are feared trapped under the debris, which includes 43 from the Territorial Army. The massive debris has blocked the Ijei River, creating a reservoir that may inundate low-lying areas. An advisory issued by Noney deputy commissioner said, “Due to the unfortunate landslide where casualties are being reported and dozens buried alive, the flow of the Ijei River has also been obstructed by the debris, creating a dam-like storage condition, which if breached will wreak havoc to the low-lying areas of Noney district headquarters…” “… As the condition is still … [Read more...] about Manipur: Six Killed, Dozens Missing as Massive Landslide Blocks River’s Flow
What Californians Love About Summer
California isn’t known for its distinct seasons, but if it were, summer wouldn’t be a top pick . The warming weather is leading to megafires and worsening drought. Often, it is just way too hot. But Californians adapt and find joy in the summer season. (Or we’re just clinging to our memories of less calamitous summers.) For the past few weeks, you’ve been writing to me about your favorite parts of the season, including the bounty at farmers’ markets , outdoor movies and long evenings picnicking with friends. Here’s some of what you shared: “Living in Los Angeles with our around-the-year beautiful weather, it can always feel like summer. But, for me, summer hasn’t officially started until the Hollywood Bowl opens. Built into the Hollywood Hills, the natural amphitheater has incredible acoustics and is one of my favorite places on Earth. If someone offers me Hollywood Bowl tickets, I don’t even ask what the show is! Just being at the Hollywood Bowl is a … [Read more...] about What Californians Love About Summer
