May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

At this point, we're all aware that synthetic pesticides are bad for the environment. But what are the alternatives? One Tiktoker may have a solution, which she's broken down in a video that's gone viral, attracting 8.2 million views, over 1 million likes, more than 159,000 reshares and upwards of 2,000 comments. The video , uploaded by Sarah Murray (@shecooksorganic), is titled "Recipe my grandpa taught me for a pest-free garden and garden care ." Murray's Tiktok bio states that she is a "Home Chef & Culinary Gardener" who provides "helpful gardening & cooking tips." The video begins with footage of a mixture of orange pieces and peel in a large bowl. "This is a recipe that my grandpa taught me when he was a gardener. And it's a natural pesticide," Murray says in a voiceover. "You take oranges, orange peel—boil it on the stove in a pot for about 15-20 minutes and what you're doing is taking out the nutrients in this, which is the calcium, magnesium, sulfur and … [Read more...] about “Kudos to your grandpa”: natural pesticide recipe wows internet

Tenants staying put for longer as rents rocket

May 12, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Tenants are staying put for longer rather than being potentially hit with record rents by moving elsewhere, research from a property website suggests. The average monthly rent being advertised across Britain (excluding London) was a record £1,088 in the first quarter of 2022, marking an 11% annual increase, Rightmove said. In London , average asking rents have shot up by 14% annually to £2,195 per calendar month. There are also more than triple the number of tenants inquiring as there are rental properties available, making the market highly competitive, according to the website. The lack of stock stems from longer tenancies, coupled with demand from people who had previously put plans temporarily on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, it suggested. Hindi Language Row Heats Up: A Look at What Indian Constitution Says on the Debate

April 28, 2022 by www.news18.com

A Twitter banter between actors Ajay Devgn and Kichcha Sudeepa has once again trained the spotlight on a debate that has been raging since Independence: Hindi as India’s national language. But, what does the Indian Constitution have to say about this? The topic has touched many a nerve, be it socially or politically. It has gained more traction since the BJP came to power in 2014 and then again in 2019, following the Lok Sabha elections. The saffron party has almost exclusively put the focus on the use of Hindi in an official capacity in administrations across the country, citing “colonial hangover” as a reason behind the push. Earlier this month, union home minister Amit Shah had said Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not to local languages. Presiding over the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee in Delhi, Shah had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided that the medium of running the government is in the official language and … [Read more...] about Hindi Language Row Heats Up: A Look at What Indian Constitution Says on the Debate

Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Ten things to do before you turn 17

November 13, 2015 by www.thehindu.com

Sometimes I wonder if there is too much hype about kids and their teenage years. Is it true that the things you get to do now, is an once-in-a-lifetime experience? As I sit writing this article at age of 38, I can tell you from my experience that it is true. These wonderful carefree days of experimenting and living without having to make your ends meet will never come back. Hence, explore, experience and exhilarate! I asked a number of my friends as well as my ten-year-old daughter’s friends about the ten things they felt they missed out on doing or things they wished to do. This list is a combination of what they told me and what I have put down myself. 1. Camping under the stars This need not be done only if you have taken a tour or have signed up with an adventure trekking company. This is something that can be done in your garden or your terrace too. Try sleeping under the open sky and identify constellations. If not, just gaze at the stars and marvel at the huge … [Read more...] about Ten things to do before you turn 17

Crazed ‘Rambo’ rat that tried to EAT disabled pensioner while she was sleeping

May 17, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

A disabled pensioner’s face was left covered in claw and bite marks from a crazed rat which attacked her when she was asleep in bed. John Kirk, 85, came downstairs to find his wife, 76-year-old Diana, caked in blood and her face and neck covered in claw and bite marks. The pensioner's eyelids, fingers and elbow had also been gnawed by the ravenous rodent which had been hiding in the couple's home in Bingham, Notts. The 9ins long animal had been nesting in their sideboard, where John kept bird seed. It savaged Diana in the early hours of May 9. Retired tank driver John, who has been married to Diana for 36 years, said: "Diana's injuries were horrific. Woman slammed for charging dog sitter £1,600 to live in her house and look after pet

May 18, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

When it comes to needing a dog sitter, many people turn to their close family or friends instead of hiring a stranger to mind their pet. But not everybody has this privilege. Sometimes, owners have to come up with their own solutions to make sure their pets are well looked after while they're away - especially if they're wanting to go away for the entire summer. But one woman has been slammed for her "ridiculous" demands for a house sitter, who must pay her £1,600 for the privilege of staying in her house for about two months. The "lucky" person must take care of her dog, chickens and quails while tending to her food garden - watering, weeding and harvesting the crops when needed.
