Tenants staying put for longer as rents rocket
Tenants are staying put for longer rather than being potentially hit with record rents by moving elsewhere, research from a property website suggests. The average monthly rent being advertised across Britain (excluding London) was a record £1,088 in the first quarter of 2022, marking an 11% annual increase, Rightmove said. In London , average asking rents have shot up by 14% annually to £2,195 per calendar month. There are also more than triple the number of tenants inquiring as there are rental properties available, making the market highly competitive, according to the website. The lack of stock stems from longer tenancies, coupled with demand from people who had previously put plans temporarily on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, it suggested. Hindi Language Row Heats Up: A Look at What Indian Constitution Says on the Debate
A Twitter banter between actors Ajay Devgn and Kichcha Sudeepa has once again trained the spotlight on a debate that has been raging since Independence: Hindi as India’s national language. But, what does the Indian Constitution have to say about this? The topic has touched many a nerve, be it socially or politically. It has gained more traction since the BJP came to power in 2014 and then again in 2019, following the Lok Sabha elections. The saffron party has almost exclusively put the focus on the use of Hindi in an official capacity in administrations across the country, citing “colonial hangover” as a reason behind the push. Earlier this month, union home minister Amit Shah had said Hindi should be accepted as an alternative to English and not to local languages. Presiding over the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee in Delhi, Shah had said Prime Minister Narendra Modi decided that the medium of running the government is in the official language and … [Read more...] about Hindi Language Row Heats Up: A Look at What Indian Constitution Says on the Debate

Joan Didion’s Magic Trick
This article was featured in One Story to Read Today, a newsletter in which our editors recommend a single must-read from The Atlantic , Monday through Friday. Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Crazed ‘Rambo’ rat that tried to EAT disabled pensioner while she was sleeping
A disabled pensioner’s face was left covered in claw and bite marks from a crazed rat which attacked her when she was asleep in bed. John Kirk, 85, came downstairs to find his wife, 76-year-old Diana, caked in blood and her face and neck covered in claw and bite marks. The pensioner's eyelids, fingers and elbow had also been gnawed by the ravenous rodent which had been hiding in the couple's home in Bingham, Notts.
