The boy with hearing-impairment who went on to become the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Chennai
When their two-year-old son Shaik Shoeb was diagnosed with hearing loss, Ghouse Basha and Rajiya Begum relocated to Chennai from Nellore in search of a school. At that time, they had modest expectations from this move. In hindsight, that is the best decision they have ever taken on behalf of their son. In May this year, Shoeb (28 years old now) assumed the position of Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Chennai, having cleared the UPSC in 2020 and completed his probation at National Academy of Direct Taxes, Nagpur as part of his IRS training. “Balavidyalaya School for the Deaf brought us to the city as Shoeb was diagnosed with profound hearing loss and the necessary facilities were not found at our home town,” recalls Basha, a retired banker. In three years, Shoeb was ready to join a regular school. With the support he received from his alma maters — St John’s English School and Junior College in Besant Nagar, College of Engineering, Guindy and later the Indian Institute of … [Read more...] about The boy with hearing-impairment who went on to become the Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax in Chennai

Boris Johnson’s Rwanda showdown with Charles – as by-election danger mounts back home
Boris Johnson faces showdown talks with Prince Charles after his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda sparked outrage. The pair are due to meet at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the capital Kigali - where the Prime Minister’s jet touches down tomorrow to kick off an eight-day diplomatic whirlwind. The summit is a few miles from the hostel where asylum seekers were due to be forced from Britain under a £120m deal. Yet the shamed Prime Minister has no plan to visit the site, after the first removal flight was grounded by the European Court of Human Rights. It will be the first time the pair have met since explosive reports the Prince of Wales branded the policy “appalling”. Clarence House has not confirmed or denied the private comments, which also include that the heir was “more than disappointed”. Government sources expect the pair to have a one-on-one "side conversation" at the margins of the summit, their first since June 3. "They are due to … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson’s Rwanda showdown with Charles – as by-election danger mounts back home
Parasitic jaegers have an extended sojourn around Pulicat lake
It is tempting to label the parasitic jaeger (Stercorarius parasiticus) a rarity on the waters around the Indian Coast. After all, the species does not volunteer a photo-op every day. Even at the height of winter when the odds of seeing this bird are logically higher than usual, it only rarely disturbs eBird pages. One has to embrace this paradox: The parasitic jaeger may be rarely seen, particularly on the eastern coast, but is hardly a rarity in these parts. And that temptation has to be resisted. To give in to it is to ignore data parading right under one’s nose. Dipu Karuthedathu, an ebirder who studies pelagic birds, places the recent sightings of the species at Pulicat in perspective. “The parasitic Jaeger has been sighted across the Indian coast — basically, the western coast and some parts of the eastern coast — multiple times and for many years. eBird data would attest to that. During the winter migratory season, we have seen a good number of these birds on the western … [Read more...] about Parasitic jaegers have an extended sojourn around Pulicat lake
Spiritual resurgence is integral for Bharat, says T.N. Governor
In the next 25 years, Bharat has a target to become a leader of the world and in this journey, a spiritual resurgence is integral, said Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi. He was speaking at the Centenary celebrations of the ‘Palace for the Poor’ front building of the Ramakrishna Mission Students Home and the Residential High School on Sunday. Following colonisation and the damage it had done to culture and spirituality, Mr. Ravi said, the course of the nation was steered away from the Dharmic way of life. “The rise of Bharat has to be on all lines. It cannot be just in material prosperity, and growth in science and technology. The spine of Bharat is Sanatana Dharma, and this dharma has to rise for the comprehensive rise of Bharat,” he said. “It took a long time for the nation to have a visionary national leadership, who could give a fundamental course correction in the progress, and contribute to Bharat. The national leadership looks at Bharat in totality and all these interventions in … [Read more...] about Spiritual resurgence is integral for Bharat, says T.N. Governor
Internet laughs as 30-year-old melts Airbnb kitchen appliance—”Fail”
An Airbnb guest shared her nightmare online after accidentally melting the bottom of a kettle when she placed it on top of a lit stove to try and heat it, despite it being electric. Electric kettles do not require physical heating using a stove top and instead plug into a wall, but aren't as common in America as other places across the world. However, actress and performer Bailey McCall did not realize this during her stay in an Airbnb last month. After going to make her coffee, she was left with dripping plastic over the kitchen from melting the owner's kettle . "So I'm currently staying in an Airbnb and the other day I went to make a French press and when I put the kettle on the stove, I quickly realized that oops, it was an electric kettle," she explained in a video on TikTok with 2.5 million views, adding a "cooking fail" hashtag to the caption. In the video, which can be seen here , McCall shows the previously like-new kettle now left with a burnt, melted bottom. … [Read more...] about Internet laughs as 30-year-old melts Airbnb kitchen appliance—”Fail”
