FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2022 is slated to be held in India later this year and Director of FIFA Tournaments, Jaime Yarza, believes that the tournament will have connotations much beyond sport, leaving an indelible mark on society for the purpose of empowerment and development of women. “This tournament is very special as it gives a bigger message than just football,” said Yarza before elucidating the impact such major events can have on society. “The whole country understands football is an attractive sport. Now, it is not only about football. It is about women, their development and empowerment. We know it doesn’t have the appeal yet like men’s football. But it is not only about sport, it is about empowerment and giving women the weapon to develop themselves.” Yarza feels FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2022 assumes added context because youth and women’s football had almost stopped due to the global pandemic; and the main criteria to kick off women’s football is to ensure … [Read more...] about FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup is About Empowering Women: Director of FIFA Tournaments

FIFA Allows Team to Select up to 16 Players For 2022 World Cup in Qatar

June 23, 2022 by www.news18.com

FIFA will allow countries to select up to 26 players for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, increasing the maximum squad size by three for the November 21-December 18 tournament. “The number of players to be included on the final list has been increased to at least 23 and a maximum of 26,” FIFA said in a statement. World football’s governing body said the decision to expand squads was made “given the need to retain additional flexibility due to the unique timing” of this year’s competition, which will interrupt the European club season. FIFA also took into account the “broader context of the disruptive effects caused by the Covid-19 pandemic on squads before and during tournaments”. UEFA adopted similar changes for Euro 2020 last year, meeting a demand from coaches who feared they could lose players due to coronavirus. National teams had named squads of 23 players at the World Cup and European Championship ever since the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. Prior to that … [Read more...] about FIFA Allows Team to Select up to 16 Players For 2022 World Cup in Qatar

August 12, 2020 by www.news18.com

Qualifying matches in Asia for the 2022 Qatar World Cup have been postponed until next year due to the coronavirus pandemic, world governing body FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation said in a statement on Wednesday. The second round of Asian qualifiers were originally scheduled to take place during the international windows in October and November but they would not go ahead due to the “COVID-19 situation in many countries”. It marks the second time the qualifiers, which also serve as the road to the 2023 Asian Cup in China, have been pushed back as matches in March and June were also postponed due to the pandemic. “With the aim of protecting the health and safety of all participants, FIFA and the AFC will continue to work together to closely monitor the situation in the region and to identify new dates for the respective qualifying matches,” the statement said. “Further details on the new dates for the next round of qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and the … [Read more...] about Asia’s World Cup Qualifiers Postponed to 2021 Due to Covid-19

The incredible figures that describe England’s World Cup fever

July 11, 2018 by www.newsweek.com

World Cup fever has reached unprecedented levels in England, with the country grinding to a standstill as the Three Lions prepare to play their first World Cup semifinal in 28 years. Only Croatia stands between England and its first World Cup final since 1966. Fans are expected to leave work early to arrive home or to a pub or bar in time for the kickoff, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. local time. Britain's Automobile Association expects the country's roads will see heavier traffic earlier, and will be almost completely deserted during the game. "We are likely to see an earlier than normal rush hour from work, as despite a 7 p.m. kickoff, many venues screening the match get filled up hours before the game," said AA president Edmund King. "Rail commuters may also take earlier trains, perhaps worried about delays or staff shortages due to the match," he continued. "AA Roadwatch predicts that on Wednesday night the roads will be deserted from 7pm and much quieter than on Christmas … [Read more...] about The incredible figures that describe England’s World Cup fever

Qatar Presses on with 2022 FIFA World Cup Projects Despite Coronavirus Pamdemic

April 23, 2020 by www.news18.com

Lusail: Work on Qatar's World Cup stadiums and mega-projects linked to the tournament have continued apace despite tough social distancing rules to stem the spread of coronavirus among the largely migrant workforce. Dozens of labourers with covered faces and sporting near-identical blue overalls clamoured across the vast exoskeleton of Lusail Stadium, an arena set to host the final of the 2022 tournament, AFP correspondents saw on Thursday. Dozens of vehicles including buses, diggers and water tankers criss-crossed the complex of new parks, apartment blocks and tram stops around the stadium, which will become Qatar's largest with a capacity of 80,000. The number of confirmed infections among those involved in construction for 2022 facilities stands at eight across three stadium projects, but organisers have not given an updated toll since Friday. Qatari authorities have declared 7,764 confirmed infections nationwide, 10 deaths and 750 recoveries. The supreme committee … [Read more...] about Qatar Presses on with 2022 FIFA World Cup Projects Despite Coronavirus Pamdemic

The Asian Football Confederation has postponed all men’s qualifiers scheduled in October and November for the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup. The AFC and FIFA issued a joint statement Wednesday saying the delay is to protect the health and safety of all participants during the COVID-19 pandemic. The games will be rescheduled in 2021. Domestic leagues have resumed in China, South Korea, Japan and Australia but under strict health protocols. There are 40 national teams involved in the second round of World Cup Asian qualifying, which had already been delayed in March and June as the coronavirus spread across the region. The top team in each of the eight groups and the four best runners-up will advance to the third stage of qualifying for Qatar 2022. Japan leads group F with four wins from four games without conceding a goal. South Korea, a World Cup semifinalist in 2002, is on eight points in Group H along with North Korea and Lebanon, a point behind leading … [Read more...] about World Cup, Asian Cup Qualifiers Postponed to Next Year
