President Joe Biden still has not called Florida governor Ron DeSantis (R) as the federal government prepares for Hurricane Ian. Biden revealed Tuesday afternoon that he spoke with the mayors of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater on the phone on Tuesday afternoon. “I told each one of them, whatever they need contact me directly,” he said at the White House but made no mention of DeSantis. FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said that Biden tasked her with communicating with DeSantis ahead of the storm. “The president directed me to contact the governor early on,” she told reporters during the daily briefing. “We have a strong team that’s in place supporting the governor right now working side by side with him and his staff,” she added. It’s unclear why Biden is avoiding a phone call with DeSantis, as he has previously contacted governors ahead of dangerous hurricanes. In August 2021, Biden spoke with Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont (D), Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker … [Read more...] about Joe Biden Avoids Phone Call with Ron DeSantis Ahead of Hurricane Ian

So you’re saying there’s a chance? Call it “wishcasting” if you like, but for the first time in a long time , Republicans are starting to see the slimmest ray of hope in midterm polling results. The most conclusive evidence is in the U.S. Senate races that could determine control of the upper chamber. In Nevada, Republican challenger Adam Laxalt narrowly leads Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto . After getting off to a rough start in Wisconsin, Sen. Ron Johnson is down just 1 point to Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes. In Ohio, Republican J.D. Vance holds a slim lead over Rep. Tim Ryan . And in Georgia, Republican Herschel Walker is still holding his own against Sen. Raphael Warnock. This polling indicates that Republicans still have a shot at taking the Senate. Meanwhile, a new Washington Post /ABC News poll that was released on Sunday is further fueling Republicans’ optimism in the House. According to the survey memo , “In the midterm election ahead, … [Read more...] about Not So Fast, Democrats. Your Blue Wave Might Still Be a Mirage.
Pennsylvania’s Democrat nominee for U.S. Senate, Lt. Gov. John Fetterman, embraced a spelling of Braddock, Pennsylvania, during his first mayoral run that “acknowledge[d] an allegiance that many of the younger residents there have with the Crips gang,” the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette previously reported. In a 2006 article authored by former Post-Gazette reporter Ann Belsar, which the Washington Free Beacon recently unearthed , then-Braddock Mayor John Fetterman contended that two versions of the town existed. The traditional spelling of Braddock ending in “CK” referenced the older generation of citizens, who experienced the once-bustling and prosperous locale. “It’s those younger people who belong to the other Braddock, the one Mr. Fetterman refers to as “B-R-A-D-D-O-C-C”, or the “O-C-C,” wrote Belsar. “That is the underground spelling for the borough, which, he said, acknowledges an allegiance that many of the younger residents there have with the Crips gang.” In a 2015 … [Read more...] about Fetterman Embraced Spelling of Braddock that Showed Fidelity to Crips
Even as most of the people of this State are yet to fully absorb the finer details of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission’s latest general tariff increase , the main message is nevertheless crystal clear: they will be paying higher electricity bills than they have paid in the past, regardless of the quality of service. E. Chandra, who owns a petty shop in Madurai, is among many people who are worried about the increase. She is anxious about how she can repay loans because a chunk of her meagre earnings will go towards the power bill. Already, the view gaining ground is that domestic category users who consume 500 units and above bimonthly will be the worst affected. The new rate for those using 500 units bimonthly would be ₹1,725 against the old rate of ₹1,140, an increase of 51.32%, a figure confirmed by Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji himself in an advertisement issued to a Tamil daily on September 15. Also Read A tariff shock to Tamil Nadu power … [Read more...] about Tamil Nadu power tariff hike: bolt from the blue

I’m a fan of ironic nicknames: big men named “Tiny,” bald dudes who go by “Curly,” etc. But in politics there’s no nickname more ironic than RINO, short for “Republican in Name Only.” Originally it was supposed to describe Republicans who went along with Democrats for political expediency. In the 1990s, when RINO really took off as a conservative epithet, it was usually aimed at either liberal Republicans like Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter or obnoxious Republicans who relished opportunities to break party ranks, also like Arlen Specter. Today it basically just means “not MAGA” or “insufficiently Trumpy.” Advertisement And that’s the irony, because the so-called RINOs are pretty much the only politicians who actually care about the Republican Party. Opinion Column: Sure enough, Trump is sucking the air out of the GOP’s midterm momentum By making himself the issue, Trump and his enablers are losing their advantage in making the midterms a … [Read more...] about Column: Why ‘RINOs’ would fare better in the Senate midterms than Trump’s MAGA candidates
