PHILIP Hammond will today unveil what could be his last ever Budget - revealing how Brits' finances will fare over the year to come. Theresa May has claimed that austerity is coming to an end in a hint that tax cuts and spending boosts could be on the way. But the Chancellor - nicknamed "Spreadsheet Phil" - is keen to drive down the deficit by keeping the purse-strings tight. Brits will be watching out for expected income tax cuts, with the tax-free personal allowance likely to be raised. Business rates are also set to be cut for small firms, while the VAT threshold is likely to be frozen in another boost to entrepreneurs. And hard-pressed motorists will welcome a freeze to fuel duty, which follows a long-running Sun campaign. But there is likely to be bad news for pension savers with the amount they can store up tax-free set to be cut. On the spending front, the biggest expense is expected to be a £20billion cash boost to the NHS. There could also be more money ploughed in to … [Read more...] about Does the 2018 Budget make you richer? What to watch for in Philip Hammond’s speech as he gives it today

ANJEM Choudary has swapped cellmates for celebrities after being let out of prison. The hate preacher moved into a hostel in a swanky part of North London just minutes away from a host of stars. X Factor host Dermot O’Leary, Oasis’ Noel Gallagher and former Jam frontman Paul Weller are all now neighbours with the notorious extremist. His new abode is also close several top notch restaurants, including a Gordon Ramsay owned eatery. Locals have said they want the “troublemaking” ISIS sympathiser shifted from the posh area, The Daily Star reports. UH oh. Looks like I’m about to get throttled by that grand old Tory battleaxe Ann Widdecombe. I don’t fancy that. Who would, etc. Widders has been standing up for our Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond. Mr Hammond is the chap who resembles a member of the undead from a 1930s horror film. He is also by far the biggest impediment to Britain getting a decent deal out of Brexit from the Europeans. He has spent almost his entire time in office posting dire warnings about what will happen to our economy if we tell Michel Barnier and Co to get stuffed, and leave with no deal. Billions wiped off our GDP. Swarms of killer bees and locusts, that kind of thing. Predictions which are quickly discredited almost as soon as he utters them. Every time Hammond opens his slightly terrifying mouth, the European Union cheers. He is a gift to their negotiators. For Theresa May it must be like having a goalkeeper whose hobby is throwing the ball in the back of … [Read more...] about Our Hamm-fisted Chancellor is a gift to EU negotiations with his warnings
WONGA is on the brink of collapse after being inundated with compensations claims. Here's what we know about the situation the payday loan giant's current predicament. Will Wonga collapse? The company was kept afloat three weeks ago thanks to a £10million emergency cash injection from shareholders. But sources say it merely encouraged a new wave of compensation claims for alleged unfair debt collection practices. Wonga has been accused of targeting vulnerable customers and charging sky-high interest. Administrators are understood to be on stand-by to take over the loans giant if it is declared insolvent. Insiders say news of the lifeline only spurred fresh legal action from claims management companies who have been circling Wonga for years. What are the compensation claims?
