The sight of a fellow student being mocked during a school function five years ago is etched deep in Anoushka Jolly’s memories. But for this 13-year-old, that incident became the push to start a social initiative to stop bullying and provide a platform for students as wells as parents to report anonymously. Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony Composer Apologises over School Bullying
A composer for the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony has apologised after an outcry over old interviews in which he discussed bullying disabled schoolmates, the latest scandal for organisers. The outcry, just six days before the Games open, comes after the resignations of several key Tokyo 2020 officials in the run-up to the Olympics, including former chief Yoshiro Mori who stepped down over sexist comments. The latest furore involves the musician Keigo Oyamada, known as Cornelius, who is among the composers for the music for the opening ceremony. After his involvement in the music for the opening ceremony began to circulate online earlier this week, interviews from the mid-1990s reemerged in which he discussed, without apparent remorse, his bullying of schoolmates with handicaps. The bullying and his remarks sparked outrage online, and prompted Oyamada to issue a statement expressing “deep regret” about both his behaviour and his comments. “I apologise from the bottom of my … [Read more...] about Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony Composer Apologises over School Bullying
San Francisco’s High Prices are Draining the City of its Culinary Talents
San Francisco is experiencing a culinary drain of sorts due to the high cost of living in the city, which is forcing many of its most talented chefs and cooks to leave in search of more affordable cities such as Oakland in the East Bay, and beyond. With cooks earning an average salary of $29,000 annually, it is impossible for them to afford the median monthly rent of $3,000–even with roommates–without at least taking on a second job in order to supplement their income, according to local CBS Bay Area. SF Cooking School founder Jodi Liano says her students have even taken to moonlighting as food writers just to make ends meet. At San Francisco’s trendy RN74 restaurant, Chef Adam Sobel says they are having trouble hiring cooks that will stay long term. “You go through the process of hiring that person and investing training and all that and they leave because they aren’t able to live or afford the lifestyle. It makes it challenging,” Sobel said to CBS. RN74 has created … [Read more...] about San Francisco’s High Prices are Draining the City of its Culinary Talents

Why does hair grow in some places and not others? Scientists have a new answer
Why can millions of hairs grow from our heads, and yet our palms and the soles of our feet are as bare as anything? It all comes down to a special molecule in our bodies, according to the scientists who have found it. The hairless regions of our skin secrete a special type of molecule known as an inhibitor. This particular one is a protein named Dickkopf 2 (DKK2). These effectively brick-up the WNT pathway, which is in charge of triggering hair growth in our bodies. Scientists at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine believe certain animals have evolved to produce DKK2 in certain parts of their bodies, depending on what will best help different creatures to survive. "In this study, we've shown the skin in hairless regions naturally produces an inhibitor that stops WNT from doing its job," Professor Sarah E. Millar, an author of the study published in the journal Cell Reports , commented. Millar, who is a professor in dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania … [Read more...] about Why does hair grow in some places and not others? Scientists have a new answer
Man opened fire at South Carolina mall in self-defense, his lawyer says
A man arrested following Saturday's South Carolina mall shooting in which nine people were wounded had opened fire in self-defense in a confrontation with other shooters, his lawyer said Sunday. The man, identified as 22-year-old Jewayne Price, has been released under house arrest and ordered to wear an ankle monitor after a judge set a $25,000 surety bond. Police booked Price on suspicion of unlawful possession of a pistol after questioning him, the Columbia Police Department said. While police have not formally alleged he was a shooter Saturday, he was barred by Bond Court at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center Sunday from contacting victims of the attack, Columbia police said on Twitter. Price was one of three detained as "people of interest" for questioning, Columbia Police Chief W. H. “Skip” Holbrook said Saturday. The two others weren't involved and were released, police said in a statement released overnight. Investigators believe a fight between people … [Read more...] about Man opened fire at South Carolina mall in self-defense, his lawyer says
Karnataka SSLC Result Tomorrow: Students to Grace Marks, Know Marking Scheme
Ahead of the Karnataka SSLC Results 2022, good news for students. The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has decided to give grace marks to students. In wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties encountered during remote learning, KSEEB had decided to give 10 per cent grace marks to candidates in SSLC exams. If any student needs three marks each in three subjects, teachers can now make an exception and award the same from the grace marks kitty. Previously, this was allowed to up to five marks. The move is expected to take the pass percentage or number of students passing the exam up. Last year, Karnataka Board reported its highest ever passing percentage as all students barring one were promoted to the next class. While none of the male students failed the exam, the pass percentage among female students was 99.99. Only one student failed the exam after she took the exam from the wrong centre. While the pass percentage this year might be less than 2021’s … [Read more...] about Karnataka SSLC Result Tomorrow: Students to Grace Marks, Know Marking Scheme
