Deliberations underway in trial linked to Trump-Russia probe

May 27, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 WASHINGTON (AP) — A lawyer for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign hid his partisan interests from the FBI as he pushed “pure opposition research” related to Donald Trump and Russia in the weeks before the election, a prosecutor asserted Friday during closing arguments of the attorney's trial. But Michael Sussmann's legal team denied prosecutors’ claims that he lied. And even if jurors believed Sussmann did lie, the defense said the alleged false statement did not matter because he was presenting national security information that the FBI would have looked into no matter the source. At the time of Sussmann's meeting with the FBI in September 2016, the bureau was already investigating whether Russia and the Trump campaign were colluding to sway the election won by Trump that November. “It was a very contentious time. The Russians had hacked the … [Read more...] about Deliberations underway in trial linked to Trump-Russia probe

The success of yellow vest protesters in France hinges on their whiteness – and this is why

January 20, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

The Clash’s song “White Riot” would be a fitting musical accompaniment to the on-going yellow vests insurrection against French president Emmanuel Macron’s government. During weeks of disturbances, there has barely been a brown or black face in sight. This absence is particularly notable in major cities such as Paris, where vast suburban communities habitually blamed for all social ills have shown next to no interest in joining. Everybody, from the casseurs – a French word for those who go out to destroy property – to thugs fighting the police, has been overwhelmingly fair-skinned. Typically, reactionary commentators and other bigots who like to dwell on a mythical “enemy within” are very disappointed by this. When the Arc de Triomphe itself was ransacked by a mob just before Christmas, there was an outcry, especially when a statue of Marianne – the female personification of the French Republic – had her marble face smashed in. Neo-nazis obsessed with the Third … [Read more...] about The success of yellow vest protesters in France hinges on their whiteness – and this is why

I saw children being gassed on the Champs-Elysees last week – police violence in France is out of control

July 20, 2019 by www.independent.co.uk

Even in a city as traditionally turbulent as Paris , recent scenes of police violence have been exceptionally shocking. Victims over the past few weeks have ranged from journalists and students to environmentalists and asylum seekers. No matter what their background, or political persuasion, all have been viewed as legitimate targets for heavily armed paramilitaries trained to deal with any perceived threat to order with extreme brutality. These specialist riot control officers – and there are thousands of them – consider summer as a time when every type of undesirable takes to the streets, and they see nothing wrong with imposing their authority as harshly as possible. The sheer horror of the situation was made abundantly clear on the Champs-Elysees last week where – as usual – the catalyst for much social disorder was France’s forces of law and order using chemical weapons on their own citizens. Videos shot on the most famous avenue in the country show young … [Read more...] about I saw children being gassed on the Champs-Elysees last week – police violence in France is out of control

Court bans expert from alleging cover-up of COVID-19 Chinese lab origins

May 27, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A scientist who accused a COVID-19 expert of hiding that the virus originated in a Chinese lab has been banned from spreading "fake news" after a legal challenge. Hamburg-based nanoscience specialist Professor Dr. Roland Wiesendanger alleged in an interview with German magazine Cicero , published in February of this year, that Professor Dr. Christian Drosten from Berlin's Charite Clinic was consciously refusing to tell people the truth about the origin of the COVID-19 virus. Wiesendanger further alleged there was evidence that a botched experiment at a Chinese lab was at the core of the pandemic. The court in Hamburg refused to make any ruling on this claim. Instead, judges ordered Wiesendanger to stop "deliberately spreading false information" about Drosten, the country's leading specialist, who he accused of a cover-up over whether the virus first emerged from a research lab in Wuhan, in central China. In February 2021, Wiesendanger, a nanoscience expert, released a … [Read more...] about Court bans expert from alleging cover-up of COVID-19 Chinese lab origins

The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End

April 21, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

Sign up for Tom’s newsletter, Peacefield, here. The U.S.-government mandate requiring mask wearing on transportation is now dead, and it was killed in the worst way possible. A judge deemed “not qualified” by the American Bar Association wrote a muddled decision that invalidated a regulation hated by the president who picked her, while overriding the authority of the executive branch and its expert advisers to make policy. And yet, Federal District Judge Kathryn Mizelle just did President Joe Biden a favor. She got him out from under a policy that served little purpose. His administration will challenge the Trump-appointed jurist’s ruling—and it should, not to reimpose the mandate, but to preserve the power of the executive branch to issue national health regulations when needed. But Biden should be glad, as the airlines clearly are, that the masking theater is over. Mask mandates were a stopgap, an emergency safety measure imposed by governments with few other options to … [Read more...] about The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
