KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama): The international community must put more pressure on Myanmar Junta as the ongoing crisis in the country has claimed the lives of over 2,000 civilians, said United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Thomas Andrews. Stressing that too much was at stake for Myanmar and its people to accept complacency and inaction by the international community, he said the longer the delay, the more people will suffer. "Bring whatever pressure that can be brought to bear, to work in cooperation with countries around the world. We're working to exert economic pressure, political pressure, diplomatic pressure on the Junta," he told a press conference, here in Kuala Lumpur earlier in the week. Andrews also called on all UN member states to engage with Myanmar National Unity Government (NUG) in order to better understand the perspective of the people of Myanmar, their aspirations and ways to help them. Oakland police say they’re overwhelmed. Do they want help?
Amid reports of staffing shortages , rising homicides and “officers leaving in droves,” the City of Oakland wants to support police officers by giving another $11 million to Oakland’s police department, potentially upping its budget to $335 million (18% of the total proposed annual budget, by far the most for any single department). But new data from the National Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (NICJR) suggests that further padding Oakland PD’s budget alone isn’t likely to alleviate the concerns of cops or meaningfully reduce crime. In a contentious public meeting on Tuesday, frustrated residents once again begged the city to instead reallocate funds to other departments that could alleviate public safety concerns. In May 2022, KRON4 said that upwards of 2,000 calls for service are flooding OPD daily. Department personnel has publicly complained that some calls are going unanswered and dispatchers are "overburdened," severely hindering day-to-day operations. “The … [Read more...] about Oakland police say they’re overwhelmed. Afghanistan Quake: At Least 1,000 Killed as Rescuers Scramble for Survivors; India, UN Offer Help
At least 1,000 people have been reported dead and hundreds injured on Wednesday after a powerful 5.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Afghanistan with authorities claiming the toll is likely to rise as rescuers find “grave after grave” in a bid to find survivors from collapsed buildings. The quake that majorly hit the eastern Paktika province early Wednesday morning struck hardest in the rugged east, as the country continues to reel under a severe economic crisis and food shortage following the Taliban takeover in August last year. Mohammad Amin Huzaifa, head of the Information and Culture Department told AFP, “people are digging grave after grave,” adding that at least 1,000 people had died in that province alone. “It is raining also, and all houses are destroyed. People are still trapped under the rubble,” he told journalists. Death toll continued to rise, leading the country’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, to warn it would likely rise further. Anas Haqqani, a senior … [Read more...] about Afghanistan Quake: At Least 1,000 Killed as Rescuers Scramble for Survivors; India, UN Offer Help
People Fleeing Abortion-Ban States Are Desperate for Our Help
Despite the Supreme Court’s negligence and legal malpractice , as evidenced by the release of the Dobbs decision that overturned Roe v. Wade , abortion is still legal in California (where I work) and just 20 other states where abortion is “ likely to remain legal .” But that doesn’t mean we oasis state abortion providers aren’t already scrambling to navigate a swirling stream of patient care chaos. This morning, I awoke to a flood of emails from colleagues in nearby states, desperately trying to finish caring for patients already in the process of obtaining abortions. Yes, that’s right–patients who have already scheduled appointments, taken time off work, paid for childcare for their kids at home, and even planned surgeries in the operating room, are suddenly unable to proceed with that care and have nowhere to go. The chaos, in part, looks like this: with sudden and immediately enforced trigger laws popping up all over the country today, providers, advocates, … [Read more...] about People Fleeing Abortion-Ban States Are Desperate for Our Help
William says Caribbean community “profoundly wronged” by U.K. Government
Prince William, fresh from celebrating his 40th birthday, has made a politically charged speech marking "Windrush Day," a day of commemoration in Britain dedicated to a generation of Commonwealth nationals who helped rebuild the country after World War II. A scandal was uncovered in 2017 when it emerged that thousands of people who moved to Britain between 1948 and 1973—known as the "Windrush generation" after the name of a passenger liner that brought the first post-war Caribbean migrants to the U.K.—had been wrongly classed as illegal migrants, detained and in some cases deported. William's speech on Wednesday calling members of the Windrush generation "victims of racism" and "profoundly wronged" by the U.K. government is a rare example of the prince weighing in on a polarizing political issue and is likely to generate criticism. He said: "We know without question, that the Windrush Generation have made our culture richer, our services stronger, and our fellow countrymen … [Read more...] about William says Caribbean community “profoundly wronged” by U.K. Government
China Opens Communism School for Politicians in Africa
A Chinese government-funded school touting the precepts of China’s ruling Communist Party recently opened near Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, the South China Morning Post ( SCMP ) reported on Tuesday, noting that the facility teaches “leadership” skills to local African politicians. “Future leaders from ruling political parties in Tanzania, South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Namibia and Angola have attended their first session at a training school funded with US$40 million support from China’s Communist Party,” the newspaper reported on June 21, adding that the assembly took place sometime this month. Ruling political parties from each of the southern African countries associated with the school’s first session helped finance the facility’s construction. David Shinn, a professor at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs and a former U.S. ambassador to Ethiopia, noted on Tuesday that “all six of the African political parties involved in the … [Read more...] about China Opens Communism School for Politicians in Africa

Bob Raissman: Draymond Green and the Warriors helping turn the NBA into reality TV
For Golden State, capturing the NBA title was almost as important as settling media feuds, social media scores, or whatever you want to call them. It wasn’t long after the Warriors won the title that Steph Curry was behind a microphone sticking it to (without naming him) ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins. In August, Perkins predicted the sharpshooter would not win another ring in the next four years. And along the celebratory parade route, the self-anointed “new media” guru Draymond Green found his chance to get even. He was not as diplomatic as Curry. “If they ever doubted — this is live TV, right — bleep ‘em,” Green said. More Green: “I warned y’all, so I’m just going to continue to destroy people on Twitter, as I have been, and Instagram stories.” Such is life in the NBA, where responding to Tweets, making Instagram deposits, amplifies the art of trash talking. Cats like Green, Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and a whole lot of other guys are more media personalities … [Read more...] about Bob Raissman: Draymond Green and the Warriors helping turn the NBA into reality TV
