Ukrainian soldiers urgently need body armor. This San Francisco company wants to help
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 In civilian life, Taras Myronyuk conducted a Ukrainian orchestra that toured the world — including gigs in San Francisco — and taught music at a university in Kviv. But after Russia invaded his country this year , the 51-year-old father of three enlisted in the nation’s armed forces and is now a combat engineer with the rank of sergeant. In his company of 62 people, only two had body armor as of late March, he said. “Ballistic protection is the biggest need that soldiers have, as well as medical supplies such as tourniquets, all of which can save a great deal of lives,” he said via text message. Now, Myronyuk and his cohorts have a dozen ballistic vests, paid for by his nephew, Andrew Vasylyk, co-founder of San Francisco’s StartupSoft, which hires Ukrainian engineers to work remotely for U.S. tech companies. That’s obviously not enough. The scarcity of body armor is repeated among … [Read more...] about Ukrainian soldiers urgently need body armor. This San Francisco company wants to help
One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion
The U.S. has now reached the once unthinkable toll of 1 million deaths from COVID-19 . How could this happen in the wealthiest country in the world? In a word, because of poverty—and the policy choices that perpetuate it. Our task now is to make different choices. Americans across the country have suffered during this pandemic. But new research by the Poor People's Campaign strongly suggests the poor and low-income have suffered the most. Even controlling for vaccination rates, they found that COVID-19 death rates in poorer U.S. counties were nearly double those in wealthier counties. During the deadliest phases of the pandemic, it rose to five times as many. White Americans still make up the largest share of America's poor and those who've died from COVID-19. But Black, Hispanic and Indigenous Americans are significantly overrepresented in America's poorest counties, and COVID-19 casualty rates run significantly higher for many communities of color. Poor Americans are … [Read more...] about One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion
Why Children Bully? Things That Parents Need to Understand
Parenting is hard. More often than not, parents always seem to be constantly concerned about their children and their well being. It is important for the parents and children to have a transparent relationship in order to better understand each other. If parents put up a wall and treat their children in only strict and disciplinary ways, there is a high chance of a child shunning them away. Parents often hope and pray that their children should not become a victim of bullying. While most parents only think about why their kid was subjected to bullying, they often forget to ask a pertinent question, which is whether their kid has bullied someone? It is of paramount importance that parents should not miss out on the early triggering signs of aggression in their kids. Why is their kid behaving in such a particular way?. Mom backed for refusing to look after sick step-daughter: “Not her mother”
The internet has backed a mom who refused to look after her sick step-daughter despite already being off work with her own child. Mumsnet user HomeSick2 shared the story on the site Wednesday and explained: "I'm home with a sick 1-year-old who is unable to go to nursery. It's my step-daughter's time with her mom today, tomorrow, and Friday and she has rang my husband this morning at work to say my step-daughter is poorly and can I look after her as I'm off work anyway and she has to go to work. I've said no." The frustrated mom explained that she has to work, as well, and also said no because it sounded like her step-daughter has a different ailment: "She's vomiting whereas my son has Covid-like symptoms . No sick but a temperature, cold, very clingy and no sleep," she wrote. "[It] could be the same thing but doesn't sound it and no way I want my son getting something else on top if I can help it, nor do I want to spend the day clearing up another child's sick when I'm already … [Read more...] about Mom backed for refusing to look after sick step-daughter: “Not her mother”
