To most people, the term intelligent donkey is an oxymoron. The general perception is that donkeys are the epitome of stubbornness and stupidity. People often disparagingly refer to not so intelligent people as donkeys. Unfortunately, the donkey has been a victim of falsehoods and canards. In fact, donkeys have been man’s companion since the time immemorial and they have been the poor man’s best friend. The donkey has served as the beast of burden and as the poor man’s horse, and even provided milk for the nutrition of poor children. Donkey’s milk closely resemblances breast milk as compared with that of the cow, the sheep and the goat. The donkey survives by foraging marginal shrubs and hence is not a burden on the owner. A donkey is the smartest equine on earth and is quite independent in its thinking patterns. A donkey assesses the situation before panicking or taking flight. Donkeys have been used for the protection of smaller farm animals, such as goats and sheep, from … [Read more...] about The intelligent donkey

Iran Launches Retaliatory Missiles Into Syria Over Parade Attack
Tehran: Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard said Monday that it launched ballistic missiles into eastern Syria, targeting militants the force blames for a recent attack on a military parade. The launch was the Islamic Republic's second such missile attack on Syria in over a year. Iranian state television and the state-run IRNA news agency said the attacks "killed and wounded" militants in Syria, without elaborating. Syrian state media did not immediately acknowledge the strike. The TV aired footage of one of its reporters standing by as one of the missiles was launched, identifying the area as being in Iran's western province of Kermanshah. A state TV-aired graphic suggested the missiles flew over central Iraq near the city of Tikrit before landing near the city of Abu Kamal, in the far southeast of Syria. Abu Kamal is held by forces loyal to Syria's embattled President Bashar Assad. However, the city has been targeted even now by militants from the extremist Islamic State … [Read more...] about Iran Launches Retaliatory Missiles Into Syria Over Parade Attack
Michelin-starred restaurant Frances returns to San Francisco, but with a conflicting twist
Frances is officially back, according to Hoodline . The Michelin-starred restaurant from acclaimed chef Melissa Perello re-opened on Thursday, June 23, but there was a major change to the format — there is no longer an a la carte menu. Admirers of the California cuisine restaurant, located at 3870 17th Street, will remember classic bites such as the applewood smoked bacon beignets: little bite-sized balls with a fried crust but soft, chewy bite-sized balls that were best when dipped in the maple chive creme fraiche. Another favorite was the uber-popular Lumberjack Cake dessert — a coconut-sweetened, dense hunk of dark-brown flour and butter with chopped peaches, Medjool dates and often apricot slices folded in. As of now, though, neither can be found on the new prix fixe menu. In September 2021, Perello started a pop-up series out of the Frances kitchen, dubbed the FXMP dinner series (Frances x Melissa Perello), which also had a prix fixe menu format. It marked the first … [Read more...] about Michelin-starred restaurant Frances returns to San Francisco, but with a conflicting twist

Mosquito bites
M y disgruntled uncle recently said that if the coronavirus was at least visible to the naked eyes, we could smash it with our bare hands, bringing the pandemic to an end. But our experience with another organism, the mosquito, which is at least a million times bigger than the virus, has proven us wrong. The mosquitoes are reasonably big, unmissable even for a person with cataract. It makes an annoyingly irritating buzzing sound near our ears audible even for an octogenarian hard of hearing. But it has managed to escape our “slaps and claps” and has been pestering us since time immemorial. Globally, the mosquito and its dirty baggage (mosquito-borne diseases) affect 700 million people and kill one million every year. It has been a source of diseases and death for hundreds of years. It has been living on earth even before the humans appeared, as carbon studies date its existence from about 200 million years ago. One can remember the iconic scene in the Jurassic Park movie where a … [Read more...] about Mosquito bites
She was too sick to make her wedding, so hospital staff brought it to her
Maria Isabel Cipple Leon, a cancer patient at UNC Hospitals in Charlotte, the United States, was supposed to get married in a wedding at her church earlier this month. But when it became unclear if she would be healthy enough to leave the intensive care unit, her medical team and UNC’s chaplain’s office rallied together in under a week to put on a wedding at the hospital’s own chapel. A medical student on her team brought a cake. Residents brought a bouquet of flowers, which they used to decorate the bride’s wheelchair. The physical therapy team and the bride’s nurses helped her, with all her lines and tubes, into a wedding dress. The chaplain’s office coordinated with her pastor on scheduling, paperwork and logistics. Food Services made sure there were enough cupcakes to go around. The result was a true wedding ceremony — one that surrounded the couple with family, loved ones and medical staff who had cared for the bride, and that enveloped the hospital in a kind of joy and love … [Read more...] about She was too sick to make her wedding, so hospital staff brought it to her
