Gov. Scott Walker declined Tuesday to voice support for Wisconsin to enact its version of a new Iowa law that bans abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, typically about six weeks into a pregnancy."I think our laws protecting life in this state are very strong," Walker told reporters in Madison.Asked again if he would back something like the Iowa law here, Walker repeated that Wisconsin's existing laws are very strong.Walker's unwillingness to publicly support the controversial measure comes as his bid for a third term is heating up. Meanwhile, Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling criticized Walker for not dismissing the measure.Earlier this month, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds signed the fetal heartbeat abortion ban, the most restrictive of its kind in the nation. The law is virtually certain to spur a court challenge; judges have struck down similar laws in Arkansas and North Dakota. But at least some proponents of the Iowa measure welcome a court fight. Ohio's new Gov. Mike DeWine, a Republican, is pledging to sign into law a bill that would make abortions illegal once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. DeWine told radio host Hugh Hewitt he would sign the "heartbeat bill," legislation his predecessor John Kasich, also a Republican, vetoed last month before leaving office. "Yes, absolutely," DeWine said when asked if he will sign the measure. "We will do this. I just saw the headline, a court struck down another heartbeat bill for another state. But ultimately, this will work its way up to the United States Supreme Court. And they'll make that decision." Kasich signed into law a 20-week ban on abortions at the end of 2016. At the same time, he vetoed a "heartbeat bill." Last month, he vetoed … [Read more...] about Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine Will Sign ‘Heartbeat Bill’ on Abortion

Kemp said he was signing the bill "to ensure that all Georgians have the opportunity to live, grow, learn and prosper in our great state." The signing caps weeks of tension and protests at the state Capitol in Atlanta, and marks the beginning of what could be a lengthy and costly legal battle over the law's constitutionality. The legal showdown is exactly what supporters are looking for.
