New Research Says Children’s Health Can be Impacted As Global Temperatures Rise
Youngsters are likely to suffer the brunt of the worsening health effects of rising global temperatures due to record levels of obesity and physical inactivity, a new comprehensive analysis of recent studies on the topic gave a clear warning. The research led by Dr Shawnda Morrison, an environmental exercise physiologist, argues that while physical fitness is key to tolerating higher temperatures, children are more obese and less fit than ever before and her findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal Temperature. This could put them at greater risk of suffering heat-related health problems, such as dehydration, heat cramps, heat exhaustion or heat stroke. She says that current climate change policies fail to adequately address child health needs and that encouraging children to make exercise part of their everyday lives must be prioritised if they are to cope with living in a hotter world. From Slovenia’s University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Sport, Dr Morrison is an … [Read more...] about New Research Says Children’s Health Can be Impacted As Global Temperatures Rise
Poorest Brits could be £1,600 a year worse off – even after cost-of-living payments
The cost of living crisis could leave the poorest Brits £1,600-a-year worse off - even AFTER government payments are taken into account. A new report found support for low-income households has fallen short of offsetting the losses they face as prices soar. Yet Boris Johnson has rejected pleas to hold an emergency budget now, or hold regular meetings of COBRA to deal with the crisis, or recall Parliament. Downing Street said it will be for the next Prime Minister - who only takes office in a month - to decide any new help for Brits to pay energy bills . The new report, carried out by Professor Donald Hirsch at Loughborough University, said up to £1,200 offered to the poorest in society this year will fail to compensate for three major blows to their income from October 2021 to October 2022. The loss of the £20-a-week Universal Credit uplift last year; April’s annual rise which was less than inflation, and a huge jump in the energy bills price cap will mean the … [Read more...] about Poorest Brits could be £1,600 a year worse off – even after cost-of-living payments
They made it through foster care. Now they’re persuading this Bay Area county to pay it backward
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 Xochtil Larios walked into the Oakland apartment last year and breathed a sigh of relief inside her first stable home in a decade. For Larios, who was removed from a volatile home at age 12, the previous nine years were spent trying to get a foothold as she careened between foster homes, homeless shelters and, occasionally, juvenile hall. Aged out of receiving government services when she turned 21, Larios felt lucky to get a subsidized apartment in one of the least affordable regions in the U.S. “That feeling of having a place of your own, that’s something I’ll never forget,” Larios, now 22, recalled. “It almost seemed unreal, like I was in a dream. To have my own home — to feel safe and have a permanent roof over my head — I cried happy tears.” To help other young adults who face a service cliff as they age out of the foster care system, Larios and a team of 11 former foster … [Read more...] about They made it through foster care. In Guam, the nearest domestic abortion clinic is 4,000 miles away. How will Roe’s reversal change the U.S. territory?
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which had made abortion a constitutionally protected right, could have a chilling effect on reproductive rights in Guam. Advocates say women have already been living under a de facto ban in the largely Catholic U.S. Pacific Island territory and fear it could get more restrictive. No surgical abortion has been performed on the island since 2018, when the last doctor trained to provide the procedure retired, according to the ACLU and the Bureau of Women’s Affairs. “People in Guam were already living in a post-Roe world,” Alexa Kolbi-Molinas, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project, told NBC Asian America. “This is what we will see again if extremist politicians enact new abortion bans and force women into second-class status.” The Supreme Court ruling might have ramifications for Pacific Islanders in the two other U.S. Pacific territories, the Northern Mariana Islands and … [Read more...] about In Guam, the nearest domestic abortion clinic is 4,000 miles away. GOP Rips Biden’s ‘Ridiculous’ 0% Inflation Spin: WH ‘Living in Fairytale’
Following President Joe Biden’s claim America experienced “zero inflation” this past month, Republican officials in the House and Senate derided the “out of touch” remarks, accusing the Biden administration of “living in a fairytale while Americans are living in a nightmare.” On Wednesday, President Biden boasted that the U.S. economy experienced no inflation in the month of July, despite costs of goods and services being up 8.5 percent from the previous year. “I just want to say a number. Zero. Today we received news that our economy had zero inflation in the month of July,” Biden stated during a speech at the White House. “Zero percent,” Biden repeated proudly. “Zero inflation last month.” Though inflation of all consumer prices in July was flat from the previous month — due to a drop in the price of gasoline from June’s record highs and a sharp decrease in the cost of airfare — inflation at the grocery store continues to rise, with prices up 1.3 … [Read more...] about GOP Rips Biden’s ‘Ridiculous’ 0% Inflation Spin: WH ‘Living in Fairytale’
Social Responsibility: Being a Brand That Actually Cares
To quote a study from Horizon Media from around 2014 : "81 percent of Millennials expect companies to make a public commitment to good corporate citizenship." With global climate disasters and national tragedies making headlines every day, I think it's safe to assume that this statistic remains the same — if not increased. We live in the age of acronyms, so let's talk about one that's quickly popping up on many organizations' radars: ESG, or "environmental, social, and governance." There's a lot to unpack in this term, but the gist is that when investors are looking at your company, they're analyzing more than just profit potential. They want to assess growth and risk opportunities based on your company's carbon footprint and sustainability measures, the conditions of your workforce and your overall business transparency. If your ESG analysis comes out poorly, you may not be able to count on doing well in your next rounds of fundraising. ESG sprung from the growing consumer … [Read more...] about Social Responsibility: Being a Brand That Actually Cares
America’s New Monkeypox Strategy Rests on a Single Study
Once again, the United States is messing up its approach to vaccines. Three months into its monkeypox outbreak, just 620,000 doses of the two-injection Jynneos shot—the nation’s current best immune defense against the virus—have been shipped to states , not nearly enough to immunize the 1.6 million to 1.7 million Americans that the CDC considers at highest risk. The next deliveries from the manufacturer aren’t slated until September at the earliest . For now, we’re stuck with the stocks we’ve got. Which is why the feds have turned to Inoculation Plan B: splitting Jynneos doses into five, and poking them into the skin, rather than into the layer of fat beneath. The FDA issued an emergency-use authorization for the strategy yesterday afternoon. This dose-sparing tactic will allow far more people to sign up for doses before summer’s end; if successful, it could help contain the outbreak in the U.S., which currently accounts for nearly a third of the world’s documented … [Read more...] about America’s New Monkeypox Strategy Rests on a Single Study
Monkeypox vaccine authorization expanded by FDA to increase dose supply

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) expanded its emergency use authorization (EUA) of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine on Tuesday. The move allows health care providers to use the vaccine with a shallower intradermal injection for individuals 18 years of age and older who are determined to be at high risk for infection from the virus. The agency said that the update will increase the total number of doses available for use by up to five-fold because intradermal administration requires a smaller dose. In addition, the FDA's EUA also allows for use of the vaccine – administered by subcutaneous injection, or injection beneath the skin – in individuals younger than 18 years of age who are determined to be at high risk of infection.
