Georgia woman who fell out of patrol car died of blunt force trauma to her head, expert says
Brianna Grier, the Georgia woman who died after falling out of a patrol car last month, died of severe blunt force trauma to the head, according to a doctor who reviewed medical records at the request of the victim’s family. Grier, 28, was having a mental health crisis when her family called for help on July 14 at their Hancock County, Georgia, home. Hancock County sheriff’s deputies placed Grier into a patrol car with handcuffs, and no seat belt on — and failed to close the rear passenger door before driving off. She fell from the moving vehicle and later died on July 21 after being in a coma for several days. Dr. Allecia Wilson, the director of autopsy and forensic services at the University of Michigan shared the preliminary results of an independent review commissioned by Grier's family Monday, alongside civil rights lawyer Ben Crump. "In this case, the cause of death is consistent with the severe blunt force injury that occurred inside of the head,” she said. … [Read more...] about Georgia woman who fell out of patrol car died of blunt force trauma to her head, expert says
Birding at the Edge
We stood huddled on the soggy tundra beside the remote airstrip, our backs to the thirty-five-knot wind and horizontal sleet. For reasons hard to explain to those we had left behind, we had come to this stark and distant place in search of birds. As the sleet pelted Gore-Tex and infiltrated cracks in our clothing, I found myself wondering, Why am I here? Why do we do this? On the tarmac in front of us was the plane in which we had arrived, a 1950s-vintage Lockheed Electra L-188 turboprop, operated by Reeve Aleutian Airways. The plane—a forerunner of the model the U.S. Weather Service uses to fly into hurricanes—looked old-fashioned but seasoned. It had carried us 1,492 miles west of Anchorage, past the 180th meridian, to the end of the Aleutian Islands: to Attu, the Holy Grail of North American birding. In bucket-brigade fashion we off-loaded our bags from the cargo bay and stowed them under a tarp by the runway. We turned to watch the Electra taxi for takeoff. The plane would … [Read more...] about Birding at the Edge
Shock as mom “neglected” daughter in hospital to care for husband
A Reddit user has taken to the site to ask if they are being unreasonable for calling their sister out over her treatment of her daughter. In the post , the user describes how they have created a throwaway account and changed individuals' names for anonymity. "My sister Sarah is married to Tom, and they have a daughter Rose," they said. "A few weeks ago Rose and Tom got into an accident (they were carpooling to an event and Sarah was going to go later after work). Thankfully they're both recovering now, but Rose was significantly worse off than Tom. Sarah got the news and she called me from the hospital. I was there a few hours after Sarah and they wouldn't let me inside to see them, but Sarah came out and told me the updates on Tom. She hadn't been to see Rose yet, but she said she got her updates from the nurses." "I stayed overnight at the hospital, Sarah was with Tom the entire time and she'd come out occasionally, I'd ask her if she wanted to go to Rose but she kept … [Read more...] about Shock as mom “neglected” daughter in hospital to care for husband
The fight for fiscal autonomy
In a recent debate between Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Opposition MPs on price rise, Ms. Sitharaman said the States should do more, ignoring the fact that the reduced fiscal autonomy of the States gives them little leeway to do much. Similarly, the increasing reliance of the Union government on indirect taxes such as the GST has directly contributed to price rise and inequality. But despite reduced fiscal autonomy, States such as Tamil Nadu and Kerala have contained price rise and inflation through targeted interventions. Growing inequality Adam Smith had argued that taxation per se is not bad, but should follow the principles of fairness. Fairness, in taxation, should be compatible with taxpayers’ conditions, including their ability to pay in line with their personal and family needs. However, the Union government’s increasing dependence on indirect taxes has removed any ‘fairness’ in taxation. The share of indirect taxes of the gross tax revenue in FY2019 … [Read more...] about The fight for fiscal autonomy
WI vs Ind 5th T20I | Iyer, spinners ensure 88-run win as India completes 4-1 series rout
Shreyas Iyer roared back to form with a stroke-filled 64 while the spinners picked up all the 10 wickets as India recorded yet another one-sided 88-run victory over West Indies to wrap up the five-match T20 International series by a comprehensive 4-1 margin here. It was Iyer's half-century and useful contributions from Deepak Hooda (38 off 25 balls) and stand-in skipper Hardik Pandya's (28 off 16 balls) cameo that propelled India to 188 for 7 in 20 overs after being put in to bat. Spinners take all 10 wickets Then, Pandya handed the new ball to Axar Patel (3-1-15-3), who quickly removed makeshift opener Jason Holder (0), Shamarah Brooks (13) and Devon Thomas (10) with three arm balls on a track where balls stopped and gripped off the surface. West Indies were all out for 100 runs inside 16 overs as one of the most lopsided T20I bilateral series came to an end even though India won't be complaining having ticked most of the boxes. Once Kuldeep Yadav (4-1-12-3) caught rival … [Read more...] about WI vs Ind 5th T20I | Iyer, spinners ensure 88-run win as India completes 4-1 series rout

Abdul Qadir: Spectators’ delight and a batsman’s nightmare
If ever there was a spectators’ delight and a batsmen’s nightmare, it was Abdul Qadir. It is said that spinners, unlike the fast men, are calm, yet fierce, and very sure of what they want to do with the ball. Only, Qadir was different. At times, like B.S. Chandrasekhar, he appeared clueless how the ball would behave once it left his hand. Honest to the core, he would admit it so sportingly. Qadir was a lovable leg-spinner. His approach, bounding in his tracks, threatening to break into a dance, angular approach, a little jig, and the ball would move in the direction of the batsman, in a loop, in a charming loop, luring his prey to doom. A wicket would be celebrated with a little hop and he would want to feel the ball urgently, as if wanting to caress it and implore it to repeat the act. He could spin the ball in, and then out. The batsman was perpetually in a trance. When he would be convinced the ball would spin away, it would curl in viciously, bemusing the batsman, and the … [Read more...] about Abdul Qadir: Spectators’ delight and a batsman’s nightmare

U.S. Senate passes Biden’s mega health, climate bill; House to vote next
Democrats pushed their election-year economic package to Senate passage Sunday, a hard-fought compromise less ambitious than President Joe Biden’s original domestic vision but one that still meets deep-rooted party goals of slowing global warming, moderating pharmaceutical costs and taxing immense corporations. The estimated $740 billion package heads next to the House, where lawmakers are poised to deliver on Biden's priorities, a stunning turnaround of what had seemed a lost and doomed effort that suddenly roared back to political life. Democrats held united, 51-50, with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tie-breaking vote. “It's been a long, tough and winding road, but at last, at last we have arrived,” said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., ahead of final votes. “The Senate is making history. I am confident the Inflation Reduction Act will endure as one of the defining legislative measures of the 21st century.” Republican amendments shunned Senators … [Read more...] about U.S. Senate passes Biden’s mega health, climate bill; House to vote next
