World Hamas Gaza Palestine Liberation Organization Israel No place in the Arab world could be more different from the Gaza Strip than Abu Dhabi. The affluent emirate on the Gulf has shimmering skyscrapers, a Grand Prix racetrack and its own Louvre . Yet Mohammed Dahlan, the 53-year-old Gaza native and exiled political leader, seems comfortable here. His home is a glossy mingling of marble and glass, with chandeliers hanging from high ceilings and framed paintings on the walls. On a sunny winter day recently, he worked in his garden dressed in jeans and soft loafers, then greeted me on his waterfront patio. But for all its luxuriousness, Abu Dhabi is only temporary, Dahlan says—a staging area where he now plots his comeback. He's lived in this city for four years, ever since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expelled him from the governing Fatah party and charged him with corruption and defamation. The rift between them cut short a political career that seemed … [Read more...] about Exiled in Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Dahlan Dreams of Gaza

ISIS ‘growing stronger with 18,000 fighters and hidden £331m war chest’
ISIS may be regaining strength just five months after it was ousted from its final stronghold in the Middle East, it has been claimed. Islamic State fighters have been conducting guerrilla raids across Iraq and Syria as it attempts to recruit new members at allied-run camps, US intelligence officials say. Sleeper cells have carried out sniper attacks, kidnappings and assassinations against security forces and other political leaders in recent months. The terror group has around 18,000 fighters and has smuggled a $400m (£331m) war chest into neighbouring countries to help finance its fanatical religious war against the West, it is alleged. ISIS still has around 18,000 fighters and is hoping to recruit more ( Image: AFP/Getty Images) ISIS once once boasted a brutal Islamic caliphate that controlled the fates of over 12 million people across Syria and Iraq, but saw its territory ebb away following a series of military losses against US-backed Iraqi forces. Some … [Read more...] about ISIS ‘growing stronger with 18,000 fighters and hidden £331m war chest’
Vladimir Putin’s evil next move predicted as Syrian doctor issues horror warning
Vladimir Putin could be poised to unleash carnage with a new bombing campaign - and a Syrian doctor has warned the devices can tear human bodies apart. More than 50 'barrel bomb specialists' have been deployed to Russia to work alongside officials from Russian President Vladimir Putin's army, European intelligence officers told the Guardian. Barrel bombs are oil drums, fuel tanks or gas cylinders filled with explosives, shrapnel and sometimes even chlorine. They are cheap weapons typically dropped off helicopters and have killed more than 11,000 civilians in Syria since 2012. Walid Tamer, a doctor in Syria's capital Aleppo, has treated victims of barrel bombs by the Syrian government, or its ally Russia, while also surviving attacks himself. He told the Mirror that the best name for Putin is "barrel bomb president." Dr Walid said: "He does not distinguish between civilians, soldiers, children and women and spreads the ugliest face of death. It is a disgrace what he has … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s evil next move predicted as Syrian doctor issues horror warning
Here’s How to Make the Colour White Your BFF This Monsoon Season
White, as a colour, is a symbol of purity and innocence. The bright and colourless hue is a staple in the fashion world. From red carpet looks to personal styles, an ensemble in white one of the most loved colours to own. However, during the monsoons garments in white are often avoided and kept away for another day. Getting a stain off of a crisp white shirt or dropping red wine over a designer white gown is a nightmare. But the bright hue does make an elegant and chic addition to your look on any given day. “I am Jane Doe #9 in the R.Kelly trial—his sentence means I didn’t suffer in vain”
I am Jane Doe #9. I am forever known in court documents as Jane Doe #9, and no one can take that away from me. It validates me and my story. But I didn't sleep much the night before June 29, the day of R. Kelly's sentencing for racketeering and sex trafficking crimes. It had taken all day to get from Miami, where I live, to New York the day before, and the following morning, I was dreading getting up. I was anxious and nervous because I didn't know what to expect; when I met with federal agents downstairs at the hotel, it started to feel really real for me. I arrived at the federal court in Brooklyn just before 10.30am on June 29 and was actually dropped off around the back because there were so many paparazzi, reporters and his supporters outside. Myself and the other survivors were nervous, because you don't know what to expect; he had filed motions to get an acquittal or a new trial, but U.S. District Judge Ann M. Donnelly quickly struck those down. I believe I was the third … [Read more...] about “I am Jane Doe #9 in the R.Kelly trial—his sentence means I didn’t suffer in vain”

The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Culture Art Relax. They didn't come from Mars or some distant, undiscovered galaxy. The 10 aliens (and their 24 tents) that appeared in the backcountry of Santa Barbara, California, in late January were conceived in the backyard of a hedge-fund manager turned yarn bomber. "Yarn bombing," for those out of the loop, is a public and oft-times guerrilla art form in which all kinds of objects, from parking meters to hulking vehicles, get covered in brightly covered yarn. Some may remember the Mexico City bus stitched over in 2008 by Magda Sayeg, often called the "mother of yarn bombing." Typically, yarn bombers ply their craft in urban areas for maximum exposure. But Steve Duneier, a 47-year-old Brooklyn, New York, native, is bringing it to the wild. "My goal is to draw more people into the wilderness, which I do by detonating massive, colorful yarn bombs in nature," says Duneier. (For the record, this project can't really be termed guerrilla, since he got a permit from the Los … [Read more...] about The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
The Powerful Authority of Cute Animals
More than likely than not, you’ve already been propositioned by the beckoning cat. Its barren, glimmering eyes are commonplace in the storefront windows of most American Chinatowns and many sushi restaurants—vacantly wooing passers-by on the street. You might also know this object as the maneki neko —a Japanese term that roughly translates into English as “beckoning cat.” This animal-shaped object comes in various sizes, and might be constructed from a host of materials: plaster, plastic, porcelain, vinyl. Its raised and beckoning paw, not waving “hello” but coaxing you to come a bit closer, may or may not be moving—robotically, hypnotically—back and forth. Typically, the beckoning cat will be white (sometimes calico) and chubby. It’s usually domesticated with a red collar, and clutching a shiny golden coin. The ubiquity of the beckoning cat is due, in no small part, to the fact that it’s alleged to have qualities that verge into the murky and obscure territory of the magical. Sonny Barger, biker outlaw and founder of Hells Angels, dies at 83
Sonny Barger, the bigger-than-life godfather of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, equal parts brawler, bully, braggart, rule breaker and shrewd huckster of his own outlaw mystique, has died at 83. A statement on his official Facebook page read: "If you are reading this message, you'll know that I'm gone. I've asked that this note be posted immediately after my passing." The cause, according to the statement, was cancer, but no other details were immediately available. For decades, the stocky, muscular Barger stood not only as the founder of the original Oakland, Calif., Angels chapter in 1957, but for decades after that also as the public face of a nationwide counterculture tribe of bearded, denim-clad road warriors memorialized in literature and film - roaring down the open highway and through crossroads towns, shocking the locals with their boisterous, often menacing presence. It was a rowdy, frequently lawless brotherhood bound, in no particular order, by machismo, tattoos, … [Read more...] about Sonny Barger, biker outlaw and founder of Hells Angels, dies at 83
