Elaine Woo, The Washington Post Published 11:58 pm PST, Monday, January 21, 2019 Harris Wofford, a Democratic senator from Pennsylvania, university president and lifelong crusader for civil rights who made a crucial contribution to John F. Kennedy's slender victory in the 1960 presidential contest, died Jan. 21 at a hospital in Washington. He was 92. The cause was complications from a fall, said his son, Daniel Wofford. The scion of a wealthy business family, Wofford attracted national media attention as a teenager during World War II. He helped launch the Student Federalists group, an organization that sought to unite the world's democracies in a battle against fascism and to keep the postwar peace. Wofford became one of the first white students to graduate from the historically black Howard University law school in Washington. He was an early supporter of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and marched alongside him in the civil and voting rights flashpoint of Selma, … [Read more...] about Harris Wofford, civil rights activist who helped Kennedy win White House, dies at 92

Harrison Smith, The Washington Post Published 3:20 pm PDT, Wednesday, August 22, 2018 Before Barbara Harris won a Tony Award, ran away with the final scene of Robert Altman's "Nashville" or starred in the original body-switch comedy "Freaky Friday," she was an inquisitive Chicago teenager struck by a construction project on the same block as her home, where an old Chinese restaurant was being converted into a theater. That, at least, was how director Mike Nichols remembered it. "When we were painting and building it, one day a young girl wandered in - because she lived on the block - and asked what we were doing. Adam Graham Detroit News Film Critic Published 10:18 p.m. UTC Aug 2, 2018 In "The Darkest Minds," lead character Ruby (Amandla Stenberg) has the ability to wipe the memories of those around her. It's a service theaters should consider offering to moviegoers exiting showings of this blandly casted, ploddingly paced teen lit adaptation. Not that this vanilla retread of genre cliches -- call it "Divergent Maze Runners of the 5th Wave" -- lingers long on the mind anyway. Based on Alexandra Bracken's 2012 novel, the first chapter in her six-part "Darkest Minds" series, the film opens in a near-future where a mysterious illness has wiped out 98 percent of children under 20. The survivors have developed various powers -- mind control, the ability to shoot lightning bolts from their hands, etc. -- and are rounded up in government camps and assigned a color group according to their abilities. Ruby is the rarest of all cases, … [Read more...] about Review: Teen cliches pile up in generic ‘Darkest Minds’
