Rising inflation and gas prices are having a negative impact on American workers’ ability to cover other expenses, according to a Harris survey. The survey found that 75 percent of hourly workers reported having challenges in paying their bills due to increased inflation. Moreover, 81 percent said that increased gas prices were hampering their ability to pay for other necessary expenditures. Hourly workers also reported they were struggling to pay for various expenses: 49 percent said they were experiencing “difficulties” in paying their grocery bills, while 40 percent had difficulties in covering their utility costs. Thirty-four percent of respondents also said it was a challenge to meet their mortgage payments. Increased inflation is not only hurting hourly workers in their pocketbooks, but in their well-being too, as 77 percent of respondents said that the stress of covering expenses had a “negative impact” on their health. Senate confirmed justices to end Roe. How will voters react?
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 WASHINGTON (AP) — The end of Roe v. Wade started in the Senate. It was the Senate Republican partnership with President Donald Trump to confirm conservative judges, and transform the federal judiciary, that paved the way for the Supreme Court's landmark ruling to overturn the constitutional right to abortion. Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell set the strategy in motion, engineering the Supreme Court's makeover by blocking President Barack Obama's nomination of Merrick Garland and changing the Senate's rules to easily confirm Trump's picks. It was a long game that sought to lock in a conservative court majority for decades to come. Trump and McConnell couldn't have accomplished it alone, needing the backing of almost all Republican senators to reshape the bench. Now, Republicans are heading into a November midterm election that is poised to … [Read more...] about Senate confirmed justices to end Roe. How will voters react?

Mosquito bites
M y disgruntled uncle recently said that if the coronavirus was at least visible to the naked eyes, we could smash it with our bare hands, bringing the pandemic to an end. But our experience with another organism, the mosquito, which is at least a million times bigger than the virus, has proven us wrong. The mosquitoes are reasonably big, unmissable even for a person with cataract. It makes an annoyingly irritating buzzing sound near our ears audible even for an octogenarian hard of hearing. But it has managed to escape our “slaps and claps” and has been pestering us since time immemorial. Globally, the mosquito and its dirty baggage (mosquito-borne diseases) affect 700 million people and kill one million every year. It has been a source of diseases and death for hundreds of years. It has been living on earth even before the humans appeared, as carbon studies date its existence from about 200 million years ago. One can remember the iconic scene in the Jurassic Park movie where a … [Read more...] about Mosquito bites
‘Train strikes remind me of great trips I once took – now travel is a constant trauma’
News of the train strikes made me think back to all the great trips I had by train. But that’s a long time ago. These days travel is difficult not just because of my mobility, but because so much is organised online. Friends tell me train tickets are to be bought or cancelled on their phones. I wouldn’t have a clue where to start. Buses are no better. Remember the days when we memorised the paper timetable, turned up at the bus stop, kept checking our watches and hoped for the best? Now passengers can track exactly where the bus is on their phone. But I can’t do that. I can check the weather, news and make FaceTime calls to my grandchildren on my iPad, but that’s it. Once again, old people like me who haven’t kept up to date with technology are left behind. My Happy Valleys! Wales is wonderful - they don't need to change a thing, Val says ( Image: Getty Images/EyeEm) Wales needs a rebrand says business leaders because it’s overlooked by tourists in favour of … [Read more...] about ‘Train strikes remind me of great trips I once took – now travel is a constant trauma’
Sony Readies for Metaverse Revolution with Cross-Platform Push
Japanese conglomerate Sony Group Corp said it is well-positioned to play a leading role in the metaverse, or immersive virtual worlds, which commentators speculate will massively disrupt industries and establish new powerhouses. The metaverse is a vague term encapsulating the idea that consumers will spend more time in online simulated environments. While the concept is evolving, it has become a buzzword in briefings and a driver of industry dealmaking. “The metaverse is at the same time a social space and live network space where games, music, movies and anime intersect,” Chief Executive Kenichiro Yoshida said at a strategy briefing on Wednesday, pointing to the use of free-to-play battle royale title Fortnite from Epic Games as an online social space. ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
