Do You Live in a ‘Tight’ State or a ‘Loose’ One? Turns Out It Matters Quite a Bit.

March 29, 2023 by www.nytimes.com

Political biases are omnipresent, but what we don’t fully understand yet is how they come about in the first place. In 2014, Michele J. Gelfand , a professor of psychology at the Stanford Graduate School of Business formerly at the University of Maryland, and Jesse R. Harrington , then a PhD. candidate , conducted a study designed to rank the 50 states on a scale of “tightness” and “looseness.” Appropriately titled “ Tightness-Looseness Across the 50 United States ,” the study calculated a catalog of measures for each state, including the incidence of natural disasters, disease prevalence, residents’ levels of openness and conscientiousness, drug and alcohol use, homelessness and incarceration rates. Gelfand and Harrington predicted that “‘tight’ states would exhibit a higher incidence of natural disasters, greater environmental vulnerability, fewer natural resources, greater incidence of disease and higher mortality rates, higher population density, and greater degrees … [Read more...] about Do You Live in a ‘Tight’ State or a ‘Loose’ One? FNC’s Carlson: ‘The Trans Movement Is the Mirror Image of Christianity, and Therefore Its Natural Enemy’

March 29, 2023 by www.breitbart.com

Tuesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson reacted to what he deemed evidence of the so-called transgender movement becoming increasingly “militant” and “possibly dangerous” after three minors and three adults were allegedly killed by a transgender person earlier this week in Nashville. Carlson described the movement as the “mirror image” of Christianity, making it the religion’s enemy. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: It was just last week that we noticed that parts of the transgender movement seemed to be getting militant and possibly dangerous. We did a whole segment about it on Thursday night. That segment was sparked by an NPR segment we had heard and never expected to hear. NPR, as always, as a matter of editorial policy, completely opposed to civilian ownership of firearms, with the possible exception of maybe IRS agents. Yet here suddenly was that very same station, National Public Radio, positively urging trans people to buy guns, as many guns as possible and if necessary, … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘The Trans Movement Is the Mirror Image of Christianity, and Therefore Its Natural Enemy’

Promiscuous Bacteria Gone Wild: Why Sushi Gives More Energy to the Japanese

April 7, 2010 by www.newsweek.com

Any Westerners who have thought to themselves, gee, Japanese people sure seem to get a lot more out of sushi than I do, are more right than they probably guessed. A new study finds that bacteria living in the intestines of Japanese but not North American people harbor genes for digesting red algae (a.k.a. seaweed, or nori ) of the kind typically wrapped around sushi. The genes digest carbohydrates (or to be perfectly precise, polysaccharides) in the seaweed. As a result, Japanese people can extract energy out of the seaweed, but Americans derive no nutritional benefit. The human gut is teeming with trillions of bacteria collectively called the microbiota, as NEWSWEEK reported in a 2007 story . These microbes synthesize vitamins for us and secrete enzymes that break down starch molecules found in, especially, fruits and vegetables, including seaweed. As the NEWSWEEK story said, "The stomach and intestines secrete 99 different enzymes for breaking these down into usable 6-carbon … [Read more...] about Promiscuous Bacteria Gone Wild: Why Sushi Gives More Energy to the Japanese

Harry Wouldn’t ‘Have Married Meghan’ if Diana Was Alive—Ex Royal Aide

July 22, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A former Buckingham Palace press secretary who worked with Princess Diana has cast doubt on whether Prince Harry would have married Meghan Markle had his mother been alive. Speaking to GB News on Friday, Dickie Arbiter—press secretary to Queen Elizabeth II from 1988 to 2000—told the show hosts: "I'm going to stick my neck out here and I doubt Harry would have married Meghan because Harry wouldn't have been in the state he was in as a result of his mother's death. "He would have taken a completely different course and he would still be here working in support of the Queen." The former palace aide was prompted to make such a statement after discussing the prince's legal battle with the U.K. Home Office over security. A High Court judge ruled on Friday that the prince had an "arguable" case against the government and that a judicial review could take place. This was a win for the prince in his dispute which, he argues, l eft Britain an unsafe place for him to bring … [Read more...] about Harry Wouldn’t ‘Have Married Meghan’ if Diana Was Alive—Ex Royal Aide

SALEM, N.H. – EXCLUSIVE – Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley says in the wake of this week’s deadly school shooting in Nashville, Tennessee, the focus needs to be on combating the mental health crisis rather than on new legislation banning assault weapons. "My heart fell like everybody else’s when we heard about Nashville," the former ambassador to the United Nations and former South Carolina governor said at a town hall on the campaign trail in Salem, New Hampshire on Tuesday, as she referenced the attack at a Christian school in Nashville, where a shooter armed with two assault-style rifles and a handgun killed three … [Read more...] about Nikki Haley says treating shootings as only a ‘gun issue is the lazy way out’ after Nashville school tragedy

Virtual Meets Reality: Inside NBA 2K and Pro Basketball

September 15, 2017 by www.newsweek.com

Sports Video games NBA Gamers The cramped room in Midtown Manhattan was packed wall-to-wall with YouTubers—a relentlessly cheery bunch—the lot of them excitedly live-streaming, likes and comments bobbing across their screens. It was August, and the crowd was previewing the latest product from the NBA 2K video game series—NBA 2K18, which was released Friday to those who pre-ordered—and the event was crowded with elite gamers, social media stars, 2K staffers and, pocked about the room, honest-to-God, in-the-flesh NBA players. Security stood at the front door. Booze flowed from a bar in the back. TVs pinstriped the length of the room, cutting it into even rows. That was the main attraction, with the gamers lining up, jostling through the morass of people to get their turn on the joysticks (all of this, of course, beamed over the internet to 2K devotees). In a room full of presumed NBA fans it was somewhat disorienting to see these NBA players—Brooklyn Nets guard … [Read more...] about Virtual Meets Reality: Inside NBA 2K and Pro Basketball

What It Takes to Make a Student

November 26, 2006 by www.nytimes.com

On the morning of Oct. 5, President Bush and his education secretary, Margaret Spellings, paid a visit, along with camera crews from CNN and Fox News, to Friendship-Woodridge Elementary and Middle Campus, a charter public school in Washington. The president dropped in on two classrooms, where he asked the students, almost all of whom were African-American and poor, if they were planning to go to college. Every hand went up. “See, that’s a good sign,” the president told the students when they assembled later in the gym. “Going to college is an important goal for the future of the United States of America.” He singled out one student, a black eighth grader named Asia Goode, who came to Woodridge four years earlier reading “well below grade level.” But things had changed for Asia, according to the president. “Her teachers stayed after school to tutor her, and she caught up,” he said. “Asia is now an honors student. She loves reading, and she sings in the school choir.” Bush’s Woodridge … [Read more...] about What It Takes to Make a Student

North Carolina’s state elections board on Tuesday removed two local election officials who had refused to certify their county's 2022 results after officials determined they violated state law. The state board voted unanimously to dismiss Surry County elections secretary Jerry Forestieri and board member Timothy DeHaan in one of the strongest disciplinary actions taken against local officials across the U.S. who have delayed or refused to certify election results. Controversies over election certification have roiled mostly rural counties across the country as conspiracy theories about voting machines have spread widely among conservatives. Forestieri and DeHaan had questioned the legitimacy of state election law and court decisions disallowing photo ID checks and voter residency challenges.
