Seven years after announcing that it had found a location for a flagship store in Manhattan -- its first full-line store in New York City proper -- Nordstrom will finally open its highly anticipated main store this fall. A smaller men's store opened a block away last spring.However, Nordstrom isn't pinning all of its hopes for growth in New York City on a single store. Americans may still be debating costumes for Halloween, but Thanksgiving is already on the calendar as a day off from work for employees at brick-and-mortar stores of at least 60 retailers, according to a list compiled by BestBlackFriday.com. Many retailers have opted to stay closed on Thanksgiving as foot traffic slowly declined and online sales took off. Costco, Home Depot, Ikea and Sam's Club are among the big-name retailers that plan to take off Nov. 22, according to the third annual compilation by BestBlackFriday.com. But the day after Thanksgiving -- known as Black Friday because it's seen as the day retailers achieve profitability, or get "in the black" -- is a different story. The Free Press visited malls across the metro Detroit region to gauge their health. Dead malls Originally known as Pontiac Mall, this mall in Waterford Township has been completely closed for several years. It was sold this month to Ari-El Enterprises, which plans to start demolishing the giant property in 2019. The firm hopes to redevelop the site as a business park with some consumer amenities along Telegraph. Northland mall in Southfield dates to 1954 and closed in 2015 following years of decline. The City of Southfield now owns the property and could tear down the mall as early as next spring. A proposed redevelopment could preserve the old Macy's store and transform it into new loft apartments.
