Less than one week after the Supreme Court struck down a New York gun law , a 20-year-old woman has been fatally shot while pushing her baby daughter in a stroller. New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the Supreme Court 's gun ruling last week, saying it "will put New Yorkers at further risk of gun violence," while New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the move "reckless and reprehensible." Officers found the woman with a gunshot wound to the head near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 95th Street on New York City's Upper East Side at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department ( NYPD ) told Newsweek. The woman was taken to Metropolitan Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead, the spokesperson said. Her 3-month-old infant was not harmed, police said, but was taken to hospital for medical evaluation. At a news conference on Wednesday night, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the woman was approached by an "unknown … [Read more...] about Shooting on Upper East Side just days after SCOTUS overturned NY gun law

New York Sues 10 Gun Companies Over Alleged ‘Ghost Gun’ Parts Distribution
New York filed suit against ten national gun distributors Wednesday, alleging they illegally sold so-called “ghost gun” frames and receivers to the public. The lawsuit , filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James , alleges that the defendants sold the “unfinished” frames and receivers without a background check or traceable record of sale. The defendants allegedly violated federal law of selling firearms without a serial number in order for law enforcement to trace them during a crime scene. The 10 distributors include Blackhawk Manufacturing Group, Salvos Technologies, Brownells Inc and Indie Guns LLC, according to the suit. “In Defendants’ own words, the products they sell are ‘ridiculously easy’ to convert into fully operable and completely untraceable firearms. Nonetheless, despite their illegality, Defendants continue to sell these products into New York State,” the lawsuit said. “Defendants persist in endangering the health and safety of the public by delivering … [Read more...] about New York Sues 10 Gun Companies Over Alleged ‘Ghost Gun’ Parts Distribution
Suspected road-rage shooter killed man near Philadelphia for driving too slow, police say
A man killed in an apparent road-rage shooting near Philadelphia on Wednesday was fatally shot by someone who thought he was driving too slow, police said. “A man lost his life today over traveling in his car too slow in rush-hour traffic,” Springfield Township Police Chief Joseph Daly said at a news conference. “It’s just not acceptable.” King Hua, 54, was killed while he was stopped at a red light about 8:40 a.m. on State Road, police and the district attorney said. A dark sport utility vehicle used the shoulder to pull ahead of Hua’s car, and then a male passenger got out and fired two shots through Hua's windshield, Daly said. The gunman fled, police said. The account of the killing in Springfield Township, which is a community of around 25,000 around 10 miles west of downtown Philadelphia, is from witnesses, Daly said. Hua was driving, and his wife was in the car, officials said. After Hua was shot, his car then went forward and struck a work van, … [Read more...] about Suspected road-rage shooter killed man near Philadelphia for driving too slow, police say
Rick Astley looks back at “Never Gonna Give You Up” turning thirty-five
The first time British singer Rick Astley was introduced to what would become his smash pop hit, 1987's "Never Gonna Give You Up," was when Mike Stock of the production team Stock Aitken Waterman sang the song's melody and worked out the chords in the recording studio. At the time, Astley was not only a signed artist to SAW but also served as their tea boy—a sort of apprentice or intern who did odd jobs for them. "I'm literally brewing the coffee while this is happening," Astley tells Newsweek . "I kind of thought, 'Oh that's interesting,' because it's super catchy. As I heard it being built, I said to myself, 'If I was in a club with my friends, I'd dance to that.'" Released 35 years ago, "Never Gonna Give You Up," which appeared on Astley's debut album Whenever You Need Somebody , became the blue-eyed soul singer's first No. 1 smash in the U.S., followed by the hit singles "Together Forever" and "It Would Take a Strong Strong Man." Not only "Never Gonna Give You Up" has … [Read more...] about Rick Astley looks back at “Never Gonna Give You Up” turning thirty-five
Women are now seen as little more than ‘living wombs’
The supposed “land of the free” is the latest of a growing list of countries who have infantilised women, as no longer having the right to control their own bodies, thanks to the overturning of Roe v Wade . This once-landmark decision making it clear that the US constitution protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose an abortion has been eschewed in favour of individual states deciding their own abortion laws. As a barrister, I am sometimes criticised for supposedly “not respecting” the integrity of the rule of law. Well, it is my view that the criminalisation of abortion shows that we are not all accountable to the same laws. The law is made by men, for men: to control, dominate and subjugate women. The law has no place regulating our bodies. Yet thanks to Roe v Wade , women are now seen as little more than “living wombs”. This week, 13 US states made abortion illegal – and that figure is predicted to rise to 26 out of the 50 states. The ruling … [Read more...] about Women are now seen as little more than ‘living wombs’
Paxton: Biden Dismisses Smuggling Incident with Twice the Death Toll of Uvalde Because He ‘Doesn’t Care About These People’
On Wednesday’s broadcast of the Fox Business Network’s “Evening Edit,” Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) stated that President Joe Biden pushed for gun legislation immediately after the Uvalde school shooting, but now that twice as many people died in the recent smuggling incident, “he says we’re grandstanding about it and he dismisses it.” Because “the Biden administration doesn’t care about these people.” Paxton said, “We just had Uvalde, where 21 people were killed. He made a really big deal about that, we had, obviously, legislation passed, which he was for, he got very engaged in that issue, this is twice as many people and he says we’re grandstanding about it and he dismisses it. Because, look, we all know he’s invited this problem. He’s asked the cartels to bring these people here. This is going to happen again. It’s happened before and the Biden administration doesn’t care about these people.” He later added, “[T]hose numbers are just going to go up as the heat … [Read more...] about Paxton: Biden Dismisses Smuggling Incident with Twice the Death Toll of Uvalde Because He ‘Doesn’t Care About These People’
