Less than one week after the Supreme Court struck down a New York gun law , a 20-year-old woman has been fatally shot while pushing her baby daughter in a stroller. New York City Mayor Eric Adams condemned the Supreme Court 's gun ruling last week, saying it "will put New Yorkers at further risk of gun violence," while New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the move "reckless and reprehensible." Officers found the woman with a gunshot wound to the head near the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 95th Street on New York City's Upper East Side at around 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the New York Police Department ( NYPD ) told Newsweek. The woman was taken to Metropolitan Hospital Center where she was pronounced dead, the spokesperson said. Her 3-month-old infant was not harmed, police said, but was taken to hospital for medical evaluation. At a news conference on Wednesday night, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell said the woman was approached by an "unknown … [Read more...] about Shooting on Upper East Side just days after SCOTUS overturned NY gun law

New York Sues 10 Gun Companies Over Alleged ‘Ghost Gun’ Parts Distribution
New York filed suit against ten national gun distributors Wednesday, alleging they illegally sold so-called “ghost gun” frames and receivers to the public. The lawsuit , filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James , alleges that the defendants sold the “unfinished” frames and receivers without a background check or traceable record of sale. The defendants allegedly violated federal law of selling firearms without a serial number in order for law enforcement to trace them during a crime scene. The 10 distributors include Blackhawk Manufacturing Group, Salvos Technologies, Brownells Inc and Indie Guns LLC, according to the suit. “In Defendants’ own words, the products they sell are ‘ridiculously easy’ to convert into fully operable and completely untraceable firearms. Nonetheless, despite their illegality, Defendants continue to sell these products into New York State,” the lawsuit said. “Defendants persist in endangering the health and safety of the public by delivering … [Read more...] about New York Sues 10 Gun Companies Over Alleged ‘Ghost Gun’ Parts Distribution
Black women are underserved when it comes to birth control access. The Roe decision could make that worse.
The Supreme Court’s ruling to gut nationwide rights to abortion last week has highlighted the importance of access to birth control, which already proves difficult for many women of color due to discrimination, stigma and systemic barriers in the health care system. While the decision does not directly impact access to contraception, legal experts say that states and municipalities that are aiming to ban abortion at the point of conception may also challenge contraceptives like Plan B and intrauterine devices. Some state legislators have already taken steps to restrict birth control, such as in Tennessee, when earlier this year Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican, denounced Griswold v. Connecticut, the 1965 case that ensured birth control access to individuals who were unmarried. “The hardest burden is going to largely fall on Black women who already have insurmountable challenges just getting health care in this country,” Jennifer Driver, senior director of reproductive … [Read more...] about Black women are underserved when it comes to birth control access. Women are now seen as little more than ‘living wombs’
The supposed “land of the free” is the latest of a growing list of countries who have infantilised women, as no longer having the right to control their own bodies, thanks to the overturning of Roe v Wade . This once-landmark decision making it clear that the US constitution protects a pregnant woman’s liberty to choose an abortion has been eschewed in favour of individual states deciding their own abortion laws. As a barrister, I am sometimes criticised for supposedly “not respecting” the integrity of the rule of law. Well, it is my view that the criminalisation of abortion shows that we are not all accountable to the same laws. The law is made by men, for men: to control, dominate and subjugate women. The law has no place regulating our bodies. Yet thanks to Roe v Wade , women are now seen as little more than “living wombs”. This week, 13 US states made abortion illegal – and that figure is predicted to rise to 26 out of the 50 states. The ruling … [Read more...] about Women are now seen as little more than ‘living wombs’
Tom Cotton: Democrats Try to Profit from Migrant Deaths
Pro-migration liberals are using the truckful of dead migrants to push for even more migration, Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said Wednesday. “Liberals are responding to this tragedy by calling for amnesty,” he tweeted on June 29. “But this would invite MORE illegal immigration, human trafficking, and suffering [and] The last thing we need is to make this border crisis worse–but amnesty would do just that,” he added. Liberals are responding to this tragedy by calling for amnesty. But this would invite MORE illegal immigration, human trafficking, and suffering. The last thing we need is to make this border crisis worse–but amnesty would do just that. — Tom Cotton (@TomCottonAR) June 29, 2022 The Democrats’ effort to shift the public focus towards amnesty for at least 11 million illegal migrants also helps them obscure the central role of their border-opening policies in the June 27 deaths of 51 migrants. The dead migrants were found in a truck, abandoned roughly 150 miles … [Read more...] about Tom Cotton: Democrats Try to Profit from Migrant Deaths
Football coach wins right to pray on field | Opinion
It's hard to imagine, but until Monday a high school coach could be fired for taking a knee to pray at a football game in America. A coach was well within his constitutional rights to take a knee to protest the national anthem, but petitioning the Almighty was forbidden. All that changed thanks to a man named Joe Kennedy of Bremerton, Washington—a Marine Corps veteran, a high school football coach and a devout Christian. In 2015 Coach Joe was fired from his job as an assistant coach at the local high school after he disobeyed a school directive banning him from saying post-game prayers on the 50-yard line. Coach Joe had been offering those prayers for eight years without incident—inspired by the faith-based football film Facing the Giants . The coach was moved by the film's message to praise God regardless of what happened on the field. But the school district determined that the coach's brief prayers constituted a violation of the law—separation of God and gridiron. … [Read more...] about Football coach wins right to pray on field | Opinion
Joe Rogan claims Spotify didn’t want some podcast episodes, denies censorship
Podcast host Joe Rogan recently denied facing any censorship at Spotify despite some videos from his YouTube channel not being transferred to the streaming giant as part of a multi-million licensing deal announced in May 2020. "A lot of people are like, 'they're telling Joe Rogan what he can and can't do.' They're no—they're not," Rogan said last month in a podcast with stand-up comedian Fahim Anwar. "Anytime anything gets big enough... there's gonna be strings attached." Anwar said, to which Rogan responded: "Yeah, that's the criticism of me being on Spotify." Rogan said he agreed for episodes to be omitted but future clips wouldn't be policed: "They don't give a f**k man. They haven't given me a hard time at all. There were a few episodes they didn't want on their platform, I was like 'okay, I don't care'. "But other than that, in terms of what I do in the future, the big test was having Alex Jones on... Alex Jones and Tim Dillon was like one of my favorite podcasts." … [Read more...] about Joe Rogan claims Spotify didn’t want some podcast episodes, denies censorship
What is pancreatitis? Travis Barker reportedly hospitalized for inflammation
Travis Barker, the drummer for U.S. punk rock band Blink-182, reportedly has pancreatitis. The condition is the reason he was hospitalized on Tuesday, according to celebrity news site TMZ , which published a photograph appearing to show Barker on a gurney accompanied by his wife Kourtney Kardashian . Newsweek could not independently verify the report. Pancreatitis is a medical condition referring to inflammation of the pancreas—an organ that sits behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. The role of the pancreas in the body is to produce enzymes that help with digestion, as well as regulate blood sugar. New Zelensky biography reveals first meeting with Putin: ‘bundle of nerves’
When Russia's Vladimir Putin began a military invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, it was widely assumed that Ukraine would surrender quickly. He pleaded with the international community to implement sanctions on the Russians and to provide weapons and ammunition for the Ukrainians. How did Zelensky accomplish this transformation? Where did he first take Putin's measure? Donald Trump rails against Pat Cipollone subpoena: “Dangerous Precedent”
Donald Trump has hit at the January 6 House Select Committee subpoenaing Pat Cipollone, suggesting trying to interview White House counsel for "dirt" will "set a terrible precedent." Trump was reacting to the news that the panel has subpoenaed Cipollone following damning testimony from Cassidy Hutchinson on Tuesday. Hutchinson, a former top aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, told the panel that Cipollone was concerned Trump would face criminal charges if he joined his supporters in marching to the Capitol on January 6. "Mr. Cipollone said something to the effect of 'please make sure that we don't go up to the Capitol, Cassidy, keep in touch with me,'" Hutchinson testified. "We're going to get charged with every crime imaginable if we make that movement happen." Writing on Truth Social, Trump hit out at the panel for subpoenaing the White House lawyer to give evidence while continuing his attacks on Hutchinson about the bombshell allegations she made under … [Read more...] about Donald Trump rails against Pat Cipollone subpoena: “Dangerous Precedent”
