Universal Credit , the state pension and other benefits could rise by hundreds of pounds next year. These state benefits normally go up in April every year, which is known as "uprating". The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will soon decide how much to increase many benefits by from the new tax year in April 2023. We should know their plans by November 2022. Normally benefits including Universal Credit , Personal Independence Payment, Housing Benefit and Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) go up based on inflation. The DWP normally looks at inflation in the year to September then puts up benefits by that figure from the following April. The state pension goes up in a process called the "triple lock". This sees these pensions go up based on average earnings growth, inflation or 2.5% - whichever is greatest. Rising inflation means many households are struggling. But because inflation is currently so high, both benefits and state pensions could … [Read more...] about Universal Credit and state pension could rise by hundreds – how much you could get

Backyard mosquito spraying booms, but may be too deadly
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 12 CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — It’s an increasingly familiar sight in U.S. cities and suburbs: A van pulls up to the curb. Workers wearing gloves, masks and other protective gear strap on backpack-type mechanisms with plastic hoses, similar to leaf blowers. Revving up the motors, they drench trees, bushes and even house walls with pesticides targeting an age-old menace: mosquitoes. The winged, spindly-legged bloodsuckers have long been the bane of backyard barbecues and, in tropical nations, carriers of serious disease. Now, with climate change widening the insect’s range and lengthening its prime season, more Americans are resorting to the booming industry of professional yard spraying. “If you like to be outside, it certainly makes it more pleasant not to be swatting mosquitos and worrying about all the issues,” said … [Read more...] about Backyard mosquito spraying booms, but may be too deadly
‘Everybody Is Dug In’: Kansans Fiercely Debate the First Post-Roe Vote on Abortion
Follow live updates on Kansas election results . OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Kansas voters will decide next week whether to remove protections of abortion rights from their State Constitution, providing the first electoral test of Americans’ attitudes on the issue since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The election could give the state’s Republican-controlled Legislature authority to pass new abortion limits or to outlaw the procedure entirely, potentially reshaping the map of abortion access in the nation’s center. The vote, which has been planned since last year but took on far higher stakes after the federal right to abortion was eliminated, is expected to send a message far beyond Kansas as politicians nationwide weigh new abortion measures and watch for signs of how the public is reacting. “Kansas is the bull’s-eye of the United States in terms of its geography, but it’s also the bull’s-eye where all the energy that has emerged from the Supreme Court decision has … [Read more...] about ‘Everybody Is Dug In’: Kansans Fiercely Debate the First Post-Roe Vote on Abortion
ACLU files lawsuit challenging Florida’s ‘Stop WOKE Act’
The ACLU, the ACLU of Florida, the Legal Defense Fund and a national law firm filed a lawsuit Thursday challenging Florida's "Stop WOKE Act," which restricts how race, gender and inequality are discussed in schools, colleges and workplaces. The complaint, filed in federal court, names the Florida Board of Governors of the State University System and the commissioner of the Florida State Board of Education as defendants. Renee Fargason, a spokeswoman for the Florida Board of Governors of the State University System, said she could not comment on pending litigation. The Florida State Board of Education did not immediately reply to a request for comment. It also names as defendants the boards of trustees at several public universities within the university system. They have made no public comment on the lawsuit. DeSantis' communications office did not immediately return a request for comment. The complaint charges that the "Stop WOKE Act" is racially motivated censorship … [Read more...] about ACLU files lawsuit challenging Florida’s ‘Stop WOKE Act’
Scientists reveal two best places to survive nuclear apocalypse ‘when 5billion would die’
Almost two-thirds of the world's population would be wiped out by a nuclear war , new research has shown. Scientists say more than five billion people would die of hunger after a full-scale conflict. Vladimir Putin 's invasion of Ukraine has brought the threat of nuclear war and computer simulations have been created over what would happen in the event of nukes being used. Lead author Professor Lili Xia, of Rutgers University, New Jersey, said: "The data tell us one thing. We must prevent a nuclear war from ever happening." Models showed firestorms would release soot into the upper atmosphere that would block out the Sun resulting in global crop failure. Nine nations, including the UK, currently control more than 13,000 nuclear weapons. Women Face Risks as Doctors Struggle With Medical Exceptions on Abortion
HOUSTON — Dr. Amanda Horton, an obstetrician who specializes in high-risk pregnancies, had been counseling pregnant patients at a small hospital in rural Texas last month when a woman arrived in crisis: It was only 17 weeks into her pregnancy and her water had broken. The fetus would not be viable outside the womb, and without the protection of the amniotic sac, the woman was vulnerable to an infection that could threaten her life. In Colorado or Illinois, states where Dr. Horton also practices and where abortion is generally legal, there would have been an option to end her pregnancy. Texas has a ban on most abortions, providing an exception when a woman’s life is threatened. But the patient’s life in this case was not in immediate danger — yet. The hospital sent her home to wait for signs of infection or labor, Dr. Horton said. Worried and with nowhere else to turn, the woman instead traveled hundreds of miles to New Mexico for an abortion. “She ended up taking … [Read more...] about Women Face Risks as Doctors Struggle With Medical Exceptions on Abortion
Putin claim U.S. is dragging out war isn’t crazy, military expert says
Claims made by Russian President Vladimir Putin that the United States is intentionally prolonging the Russia-Ukraine conflict may not be as implausible as described, says one U.S. military veteran and journalist. In a speech this week, Putin called out "Western globalist elites" who he said are "provoking chaos, inciting old and new conflicts," and attempting "to preserve the hegemony and power that is slipping out of their hands." He added that the situation in Ukraine shows the U.S. is "trying to prolong the conflict." Sean Spoonts , a U.S. Navy veteran and editor-in-chief of Special Operations Forces Report (SOFREP), told Newsweek that President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky seem to have separate policy goals in mind. "It seems like while Ukraine would like to end the war quickly and decisively defeat Russian forces and drive them out of their country, U.S. policy almost seems designed to prolong the conflict hoping to bring about the … [Read more...] about Putin claim U.S. is dragging out war isn’t crazy, military expert says
A Brief History of Yasir Arafat
Yasir Arafat claims that he was born in Jerusalem, but he was actually born in Cairo. He claims to belong to the prominent Jerusalem family of Husseini, but he is at best only distantly related to it. He claims that he turned down a chance to go to the University of Texas, but according to one biographer, the Palestinian-born writer Saïd K. Aburish, it is highly unlikely that he was ever accepted. He claims to have disabled ten Israeli armored personnel carriers in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war, but Israel didn't even have ten APCs in the sector he was in. He claims to have made millions as a businessman in Kuwait, but this, too, is almost certainly untrue. Obviously, Arafat is a congenital liar. But there's more to it than that: his lies are all designed to create an aura of romance around himself and the Palestinian people. Arafat is the most bizarre political leader in the world today, in that he has obliterated all considerations of ordinary living and has fused himself completely … [Read more...] about A Brief History of Yasir Arafat
In Mississippi, a Post-Roe Question: What Will Republicans Do to Help New Mothers?
JACKSON, Miss. — Like low-income pregnant women around the country, nearly every patient at the Sisters in Birth clinic here is covered by Medicaid, the public health insurance program for the poor. But they face the prospect of losing the coverage two months after their babies are born, when they are still at high risk of complications that could lead to serious illness — or even death. Last year, Democrats put a potential solution in their pandemic relief bill: a streamlined way to extend new mothers’ Medicaid coverage for a full year after they give birth. Most states have pursued the option , but Mississippi is among 17, largely led by Republicans, that have not. Most of those, including Mississippi, have also banned abortion or will soon. In the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Republican lawmakers who welcomed it are under pressure to commit to policies that will support women and children. But the conversations have barely begun, and many … [Read more...] about In Mississippi, a Post-Roe Question: What Will Republicans Do to Help New Mothers?
