The Guntur Municipal Corporation has intensified its enforcement of the ban on single-use plastic in the city as it has come to light that many vendors are yet to comply with the new rule. Municipal Commissioner Keerthi Chekuri, who conducted surprise checks, issued instructions to municipal staff to impose a ₹5,000-fine on those using plastic bags below the prescribed thickness. “We are making it clear that any shops, vegetable vendors, fruit vendors, malls and other establishments using single-use plastic would be fined ₹5,000. Action will also be taken against those manufacturing such plastic bags and those who hoard plastic carry bags. Task force teams have been set up to enforce the ban. Telangana: KCR asks TRS legislators to vote as per conscience during Presidential poll
Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao has appealed to the electors of the Presidential election, scheduled to be held on July 18, to vote as per their conscience after weighing the two candidates in the fray, and not based on their political affiliation. Addressing a meeting of TRS MPs, MLAs, MLCs, its State executive committee members and other senior leaders of the party convened in support of Yashwant Sinha, the candidate fielded by the Opposition, here on Saturday, the Telangana Chief Minister said Mr. Sinha’s candidature outweighs that of his rival’s as he was a towering personality. “He (Mr. Sinha) is an honest politician and an able administrator who handled the key portfolios of finance and external affairs in the Union Cabinet in the A.B. Vajpayee Government,” Mr. Rao said. In an appeal to all Parliamentarians in the country, the TRS chief said that there was a democratic practice in the country of voting as per conscience on some occasions and … [Read more...] about Telangana: KCR asks TRS legislators to vote as per conscience during Presidential poll
Shiv Sena | The Maratha tiger in its labyrinth
In the fall of 2012, an ailing Bal Thackeray, founder and patriarch of Maharashtra’s then dominant right-wing party — the Shiv Sena (Army of Shivaji) — had appealed to his Shiv Sainiks to stand by his son Uddhav and grandson Aaditya Thackeray. In what would be his final address to his party workers, Bal Thackeray, in his pre-recorded speech at the party’s annual Dussehra rally in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park, called upon the Marathi manoos (Marathi-speaking sons-of-the soil) to remain united and smash the Congress. The speech, three weeks before the 86-year-old Thackeray’s death in November that year, also had an implied appeal to his estranged nephew, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray, to join forces with the Shiv Sena. A decade later, while the prospects of the Sena and the MNS uniting have completely evaporated, a bleaker question facing Mr. Uddhav and his son today is whether ordinary Sainiks will stand by them after the recent rebellion of 40 MLAs led by Eknath … [Read more...] about Shiv Sena | The Maratha tiger in its labyrinth

Two Players’ IDs Deactivated by BAI Due to Age-fraud in U-13 Event
The Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Saturday deactivated the IDs (identity documents) of two players for being overaged but said their quantum of punishment will be decided later by the Age Fraud Committee. Multiple cases of age-fudging were reported during the All India Sub-Junior under-13 ranking tournament (June 19 to 25) in Hyderabad and at the ongoing U-13 event in Mohali. Things escalated after more than 60 aggrieved parents protested against the BAI for not taking immediate action, forcing the organisers to stop the matches and postpone the proceedings by a day. “There were complaints against two players from Rajasthan and after getting proof of age fudging we have deactivated their IDs. Further decision on punishment will be taken by the Age Fruad Committee,” BAI secretary Sanjay Mishra told PTI. “These two players had submitted false birth certificates while making their IDs and after we were made aware of the real documents and verified by the corporation, … [Read more...] about Two Players’ IDs Deactivated by BAI Due to Age-fraud in U-13 Event
Chilavannur Bund Road development being fast-tracked
The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) is in advanced stages of discussions with landowners to complete the land acquisition process to clear bottlenecks on the 4-km-long Chilavannur Bund Road that will decongest the entire SA Road and the southern side of Vyttila Junction. The road that will link Thykoodam on the National Highway Bypass with Thevara on MG Road could have been realised a decade ago, but for the inordinate delay in acquiring a 250-metre-long stretch comprising three houses and a bigger plot that belonged to a church. Efforts to complete the land acquisition process by providing alternative land to plot owners gained momentum after K. Chandran Pillai assumed charge as Chairman of the authority. The road will be handed over to the Kochi Corporation for further development, once the requisite land is acquired. This is because the civic agency is better placed to mobilise funds for its development, it is learnt. The GCDA is banking hope on the State … [Read more...] about Chilavannur Bund Road development being fast-tracked
