A requirement that grade-school girls wear shorts, jumpers or skorts (which look like a skirt but include shortslike fabric underneath) at a public charter school violates the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment, a federal judge has ruled. Senior U.S. District Judge Malcolm Howard of Greenville, North Carolina, ruled March 28, report the New York Times and the Washington Post. The American Civil Liberties Union has a press release. The Charter Day School in Leland, North Carolina, barred girls from wearing pants or shorts but required them for boys. The girls were permitted, however, to wear stockings or leggings. On days of physical education classes, students could wear sweatpants or shorts. Unified school board will vote Tuesday on a resolution that would direct the superintendent to pursue a moratorium on new charter schools in the district. The resolution would also require the school board to call on state officials to study the financial impact of charters on the district to inform revisions to the state’s charter law. And the superintendent would have to report if a moratorium requires a voter-approved ballot initiative. A school board vote on whether to support curtailing charter growth was a key element in L.A. Unified’s and United Teachers Los Angeles’s agreement this week that ended the six-day teacher strike, though it is not in the actual contract. Jennifer Chambers The Detroit News Published 11:47 PM EST Nov 14, 2018 Detroit — The sudden closure of Delta Preparatory Academy devastated Earl Carter's 17-year-old son, who was beginning his senior year. The Detroit charter school closed just three weeks into the new school year in September, citing financial challenges and forcing 180 students in grades 9-12 to find new schools to continue their education. "They messed up a lot of kids' lives," said Earl Carter, whose son, Olonzo Prescott, scrambled to find a new school. "They messed up a lot of kids' lives." Olonzo, who eventually enrolled at Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern, a Detroit Public Schools Community District school, is hoping to receive scholarship interest from colleges for his athletic ability, but his prospects now look doubtful because of being forced to start over at the new school, according to his father.
