Nearly 1,000 Illegal Boat Migrants Land in Britain in Just Four Days
Calm seas and warm weather conditions have seen nearly 1,000 illegal boat migrants cross the English Channel since the weekend, with another 300 arriving on Tuesday as the Rwanda scheme continues to fail to act as a deterrent. So far this year, over 8,500 illegals have reached the UK via the waterway, after over 600 landed over the weekend and around another 300 arriving on Tuesday, The Telegraph reported . The rate at which boat migrants have successfully reached the UK is nearly double the previous record at this time of year in 2021 when 3,112 arrived, and over six times the record set before that in 2020 when 1,340 landed, according to calculations from the Daily Mail . The upswing in the number of migrants landing in May has been seen as confirmation by some that the government’s stated intention of sending illegal boat migrants to the East African nation of Rwanda has failed to act as a deterrent to those waiting in camps in Calais and other coastal regions of … [Read more...] about Nearly 1,000 Illegal Boat Migrants Land in Britain in Just Four Days

Republicans Are Defending a Sanitized Version of ‘The Great Replacement’
Three years ago, when a white-supremacist fanatic killed dozens of people in El Paso, Texas, the reaction from the right was unreserved condemnation . When another white-supremacist fanatic killed 10 people at a supermarket in a Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, last week, the reaction from some figures on the right was to acknowledge that the guy had a point about this whole “replacement” thing. Large sections of the manifesto attributed to the Buffalo shooter were plagiarized from the El Paso shooter’s writings. Both share the premise that violence against nonwhite people is justified to prevent “white genocide” or the “replacement” of white Americans by nonwhite immigrants. As the alleged Buffalo shooter put it, he carried out the attack because “all black people are replacers just by existing in White countries.” I would offer to explain how Black people got to the United States , but who knows if “critical race theory” remains legal where you’re reading this. Elise Stefanik “QAnon queen” rhetoric threatens U.S. security—Matt Castelli
Matt Castelli's run for Congress was prompted by the deadly events at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021. Republican Representative Elise Stefanik 's actions in the aftermath and her repeated promotion of former president Donald Trump 's "big lie" that the 2020 election was stolen from him sealed Castelli's decision to launch a bid as a Democrat to unseat her in New York's 21st congressional district. The third-ranking House Republican's continued promotion of the baseless claims is "an ongoing threat" to the security of the country, said Castelli, a former CIA officer who served as the director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council in both the Obama and Trump White Houses. "The position that she has taken and has done so consistently and very recently has been to continue to promote the big lie that led to the deaths of five police officers, and the injuries of hundreds of others, in what was really one of the greatest assaults on law enforcement in the … [Read more...] about Elise Stefanik “QAnon queen” rhetoric threatens U.S. security—Matt Castelli
Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been hit by a fake break-up rumor picked up and spread by MSN.com. There is nothing to suggest the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are experiencing marital problems and they appeared happy together during a visit to Scotland on May 11. However, an article on French-language website Oh My Mag wrongly suggested Kate had walked out with the couple's three children, the website's publisher told Newsweek . MSN.com then ran a translation hosted on its own website, while a link to the story was posted to its 227,600 Twitter followers on May 17. Outlandish conspiracies about the British royal family appear in the world's media from time to time but what is notable about this example is the role MSN.com played in giving the story the potential to reach a mass audience in Britain and America. A spokesperson for Groupe Cerise, which owns Oh My Mag , told Newsweek : "This story is indeed false and has been published by accident. We are … [Read more...] about Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads
UK Ignored Islamists to Brand ‘Mainstream’ Right-Wing as Terror Threat
A leaked review of a UK counterterrorism programme has found that it overlooked radical Islamists while targeting individuals espousing “mainstream” right-wing views as potential threats. Ordinary right-wingers in the United Kingdom have been reportedly designated as potential terrorists as part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy while radical Islamists were largely ignored, a leaked report has found. Commissioned by the UK government, the leaked review of the multi-agency “Prevent” programme found that it disproportionally focused on threats on the right, using a definition of so-called “neo-nazism” that was allegedly so broad it encompassed “mildly controversial or provocative forms of mainstream, rightwing-leaning commentary that have no meaningful connection to terrorism or radicalisation”. According to journalists from The Guardian who have seen the leaked document, this has seemingly resulted in ordinary people being targeted by the program despite them showing … [Read more...] about UK Ignored Islamists to Brand ‘Mainstream’ Right-Wing as Terror Threat
Town forced to shut down after sole clerk resigns over vacation denial
A small town in Maine has effectively shut down after its only clerk resigned. Christen Bouchard resigned from her role as town clerk of Passadumkeag, Maine, on April 7, the Bangor Daily News reported. The town has a population of 356 as of the 2020 census. The record number of Americans quitting their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has been termed " The Great Resignation ." Quitting rates have continued to soar this year, with over 4.5 million people leaving their jobs in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bouchard stepped down because the board of selectmen denied her a two-week vacation, claiming there was no one available to take over her duties. Unfortunately for the officials, the job that would have needed filling for two weeks is now permanently open. During the time that Bouchard served as town clerk, she also became deputy treasurer and took charge of licensing pets, registering vehicles, maintaining records and liaising with … [Read more...] about Town forced to shut down after sole clerk resigns over vacation denial
Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick
Colorado, Nebraska jostle over water rights amid drought
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 17 OVID, Colo. (AP) — Shortly after daybreak on the high plains of northeastern Colorado, Don Schneider tinkers with seed-dispensing gear on a mammoth corn planter. The day’s task: Carefully sowing hundreds of acres of seed between long rows of last year’s desiccated stalks to ensure the irrigation water he's collected over the winter will last until harvest time. A two-hour’s drive eastward, Steve Hanson, a fifth-generation Nebraska cattle breeder who also produces corn and other crops, is preparing to seed, having stored winter water to help ensure his products make it to market. Like Schneider and countless others in this semi-arid region, he wants his children and grandchildren to be able to work the rich soil homesteaded by their ancestors in the 1800s. Schneider and Hanson find themselves on … [Read more...] about Colorado, Nebraska jostle over water rights amid drought
