Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access

Bangi parliamentary constituency will be a challenge for DAP in GE15, says Loke
KAJANG: The Bangi parliamentary constituency will prove to be a challenge for the DAP in the 15th general election (GE15), says secretary-general Anthony Loke Siew Fook. He said this was because of the high number of voters in the parliamentary constituency with almost 100,000 of the total being young voters aged between 18 and 21. "The constituents here comprise a large number of youth and people of various races. "So, the candidate who will be replacing incumbent Bangi MP (Dr Ong Kian Ming) will face a great challenge and the party must take this into consideration in the upcoming GE15,” he told a press conference here on Wednesday (May 11) which was also attended by Ong. Loke said although Ong has announced that he would not contest in GE15, he (Ong) would continue to assist the party and spend some time to find a candidate suitable for the Bangi voter demographics. "We will continue to get Ong’s assistance to ensure whoever the candidate, will be able to continue to have … [Read more...] about Bangi parliamentary constituency will be a challenge for DAP in GE15, says Loke
Cheating cases: Lodge reports instead of resorting to public smearing campaign, say cops
KOTA KINABALU: The authorities have issued a warning to the public not to put up illegal advertisements such as posters and banners on public property especially if they involved allegations of crimes having been committed. This came after A4-sized posters were found pasted on the pillars of a flyover as well as on streetlight poles in Lintas here several days ago. The posters contained the photo of a man and a woman, whose names and identity card numbers were also included. There is also the wording “Penipu” (scammer) printed on the posters. Sabah Commercial Crimes Investigation Department chief Supt G. Moses Govindarajoo said people should refrain from putting up advertisement materials without approval from the Kota Kinabalu City Hall. “My advice to those who have fallen victims - lodge a police report instead of putting up such posters as this is against the by-laws,” he said when contacted on Tuesday (May 17). Pennsylvania governor race divides Republicans, unites Dems
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 10 HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — As Pennsylvania Republicans prepare to choose a nominee for governor Tuesday, some party officials are twisted in knots over the possibility of a primary victory by a candidate many see as too far to the right to win statewide this fall. Doug Mastriano, a retired U.S. Army colonel and state senator since 2019, has led polls while spending a fraction of the money that some of the other eight candidates listed on the Republican primary ballot have spent. Mastriano recently won the endorsement of Donald Trump after working with the former president to overturn his loss in 2020's election in the presidential battleground state and helping spread Trump’s lies that widespread voter fraud cost him victory. Many party officials urged Trump not to endorse Mastriano, fearing he cannot win over the moderate voters necessary to … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor race divides Republicans, unites Dems
Alice Cutter: Ex-Miss Hitler entrant among four ‘diehards’ jailed for belonging to banned far-right group
A former Miss Hitler beauty pageant entrant and her ex-partner have been jailed for a total of more than eight years for belonging to banned far-right group National Action (NA). Alice Cutter was sentenced to three years and Mark Jones to five-and-a-half-years at Birmingham Crown Court for being members of the terrorist organisation. The pair, from Sowerby Bridge in Yorkshire, were convicted in March alongside two other neo-Nazi "diehards", Garry Jack and Connor Scothern. Jack faces four-and-a-half years in prison, while Scothern was sentenced to 18 months' detention. Jurors were shown messages in which Cutter, 23, joked about gassing synagogues, using a Jewish person's head as a football, and exclaiming "Rot in hell, bitch", after hearing of the 2016 murder of MP Jo Cox by far-right sympathiser Thomas Mair. Speaker’s neutrality is now under threat
But not all speakers live up to these expectations. National Assembly Speaker Park Byeong-seug aided the Democratic Party’s railroading of bills stripping of investigative powers from prosecutors. Even in that case, the speaker apparently seemed to maintain a balance between the rivaling parties. But the DP in the process of electing the next speaker has demeaned the neutrality principle from the beginning. Five-term lawmakers Kim Jin-pyo, Lee Sang-min, Cho Jeong-sik and four-term Rep. Woo Sang-ho are vying for the position. More candidates could come forward. The candidates all vow to serve the DP. Candidates have usually been coordinated according to seniority and elected term. But the race for the speaker position is looking more like a contest for the floor leader’s title. Kim said the DP must uphold “dream and hope through the National Assembly,” arguing it was the “duty and fate” of the DP as a majority to keep the Yoon Suk-yeol administration with “merciless law … [Read more...] about Speaker’s neutrality is now under threat
