Bombay High Court directs BAI to include shuttler Kulkarni for Pune tournament
In a special hearing held on the Independence Day on Monday, the Bombay High Court's Aurangabad bench directed the Badminton Association of India (BAI) to include national player Prathamesh Kulkarni's name for wild card entry in an international tournament to be held in Pune . The name of 18-year-old Kulkarni was not included in the list due to a clerical error on part of the BAI. A division bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Arun Pednekar in its order, which was made available on Tuesday, said Kulkrani cannot be faulted as he had submitted his application form online with correct details well before the deadline. The bench also noted that there was “bungling” and “error" committed by the BAI while handling Kulkarni's form. Petitioner Kulkarni had informed the court that on August 15 the exercise of inclusion of names of eligible players for the tournament would conclude. The bench said if there is no impediment, then Kulkarni would be entitled to play in the Pune … [Read more...] about Bombay High Court directs BAI to include shuttler Kulkarni for Pune tournament

Texas Border City Mayor Pleads Guilty to Federal Bribery, Fraud Charges
A Texas border city mayor pleaded guilty to federal fraud charges for using his position as a local school administrator to rig a contract for his benefit. Late last week, 38-year-old Rodrigo “Rigo” Lopez, the mayor of Penitas, Texas, went before U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez and pleaded guilty to a federal fraud charge. Alvarez is expected to sentence Lopez in late October, which could lead to 10 years in prison. Authorities first arrested Lopez in June at the Hidalgo Port of Entry when he was returning from Reynosa. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Lopez worked with the La Joya ISD athletic director to carry out purchasing frauds in 2018. Until recently, Lopez had been an administrator at La Joya ISD. Federal prosecutors revealed that Lopez used his personal business, Xizaka LLC, to rig a contract worth more than $70,000 in sporting goods sales to the district. These included 156 baseball gloves, 15,400 square feet of turf, and three pitching machines — all at … [Read more...] about Texas Border City Mayor Pleads Guilty to Federal Bribery, Fraud Charges
[Read more...] about Traficantes de Personas Usan Químicos Peligrosos con Migrantes, Dice Patrulla Fronteriza
Trump legal adviser ordered to testify in Ga. election probe
By KATE BRUMBACK ATLANTA (AP) — A judge in Colorado on Tuesday ordered a legal adviser for former President Donald Trump’s campaign to travel to Georgia to testify before a special grand jury that’s looking into whether Trump and others illegally tried to influence the 2020 election in Georgia. Judge Gregory Lammons in Fort Collins, Colorado, made the decision after holding a hearing on a request from Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to compel testimony from attorney Jenna Ellis. Prosecutors are interested in Ellis’s role in helping to coordinate and plan legislative hearings in Georgia and others states where false allegations of election fraud were pushed, according to testimony in court. Fulton County prosecutors have purchased plane tickets and made a hotel reservation in preparation for Ellis to testify on Aug. 25. The investigation, prompted by a January 2021 phone call between Trump and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, began early last year. … [Read more...] about Trump legal adviser ordered to testify in Ga. election probe
Paul Manafort Is Back
The title of Paul Manafort’s memoir, Political Prisoner , is ridiculous, but at least he’s writing what he knows. For much of his professional life, Manafort served as a lobbyist and an image consultant for the world’s most prolific torturers. One of his clients, the Angolan revolutionary Jonas Savimbi, led an army that incinerated its enemies alive. Another of his clients, President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, dumped hundreds of mutilated corpses in the streets to show the price of opposing him. After spending 23 months in prison on charges of bank fraud, witness tampering, conspiracy, and tax evasion—the longest stretch in a low-security facility in Pennsylvania—Manafort now places himself in the same category as the victims of rape and beatings whose suffering he was once handsomely paid to minimize. This grotesque conflation feels like the fitting capstone to his career. After decades of working to soften the reputations of dictators, corporations, and Republican … [Read more...] about Paul Manafort Is Back
