Today’s forecast from Newsroom Meteorologist Gerry Díaz . hottest weather yet . A combination of two weather systems is helping drive this quick shot of hot and hazy air into the wider Bay Area. A ridge of high pressure in the Southwest is drawing heat from the Mojave into parts of the Bay Area that neighbor the Sacramento Valley. Meanwhile, northerly winds blowing around 2,000 feet (that’s about two Sutro Towers) above the Earth’s surface are bringing smoke from the Six Rivers lightning complex fire , burning in Humboldt and Trinity counties, into Central California and the Bay Area. The hot air will blast into the Bay Area today, bringing 90 to 100-plus degree temperatures to areas east of the Caldecott Tunnel, the Napa and Sonoma highlands, and South Bay cities along the 101 corridor between Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Balmy 70 to 80-degree temperatures will mix down into parts of San Francisco. Liz Cheney mocks Kevin McCarthy’s speaking skills ahead of Wyoming primary
Polls indicate that Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney is likely to lose her primary election Tuesday, largely because key figures in her party have coalesced behind her challenger Harriet Hageman. One such figure is California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who campaigned for Hageman Monday and spoke to Fox News about the race. The House Minority Leader is not known for his wits on Capitol Hill — so much so that there was a lengthy Politico article about how many congressional reporters "don’t think he’s the sharpest tool in the shed" but don't articulate this belief publicly because "stupid may be one of Washington’s last taboos." When speaking to Fox on Monday, McCarthy offered a few garbled sentences, including: "The principle philosophy is less government, an idea of freedom in the aspect that just the concepts of a country that's conceived in liberty and dedicated proposition that we're all it has," and "I think [Cheney's] whole focus has been different. Her whole focus has been against … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney mocks Kevin McCarthy’s speaking skills ahead of Wyoming primary

Tom Kean Jr. Slams Malinowski for ‘Being Out of Step with Voters’
New Jersey Republican Tom Kean Jr., who is going head to head with vulnerable Democrat Rep. Tom Malinowski in the November election, told Breitbart News that his opponent is “out of step” with the voters on multiple issues. “He doesn’t understand the importance of having parents involved in the kids’ education,” Kean Jr. said in an exclusive interview with Breitbart News. “I think parents should be at school boards and should have a role in their kids’ education and just goes to show Tom Malinowski is out of step with his constituents.” Kean Jr. went on to say he opposes critical race theory and had voted against it when he was in the New Jersey state Senate. Critical race theory is an academic framework claiming America is systemically racist and that different groups are either oppressed or oppressors based entirely on the color of their skin. “It’s very clear from his rhetoric and his actions that he doesn’t understand the importance of parents having a voice on their kids … [Read more...] about Tom Kean Jr. Slams Malinowski for ‘Being Out of Step with Voters’

The Pandemic’s Soft Closing
A quick skim of the CDC’s latest COVID guidelines might give the impression that this fall could feel a lot like the ones we had in the Before Times. Millions of Americans will be working in person at offices, and schools and universities will be back in full swing. There will be few or no masking, testing, or vaccination mandates in place. Sniffles or viral exposures won’t be reason enough to keep employees or students at home. And requirements for “six feet” will be mostly relegated to the Tinder profiles of those seeking trysts with the tall. Americans have been given the all clear to dispense with most of the pandemic-centric behaviors that have defined the past two-plus years—part and parcel of the narrative the Biden administration is building around the “triumphant return to normalcy,” says Joshua Salomon, a health-policy researcher at Stanford. Where mitigation measures once moved in near lockstep with case numbers, hospitalizations, and deaths, they’re now on separate … [Read more...] about The Pandemic’s Soft Closing

Rose Huntington-Whitely has opened up about how her body has changed since having a baby. The supermodel, 33, poses on the cover of this month's Elle UK magazine and looks incredible, but she says she is "starting to see fine lines" and notices the difference in her figure. She is mum to three-year-old Jack, who she shares with her partner of 10 years, actor Jason Statham. When asked about how she feels about ageing, Rose told the magazine: "As someone who's built a lot, if not all of their business on looking a certain way, there may come a time when my answer to this is truthfully quite different, but I'm still 33 – so I'm starting to see fine lines and perhaps things don’t sit where they did pre-baby, but I'm OK with it, I can make it work. Has the Kilauea eruption created a new volcano on Hawaii?
Kilauea, the most active volcano on Hawaii, has been in continual eruption since 1983. It entered a new phase in early May when fractures along a rift on the eastern side of the volcano opened during a series of earthquakes—some of which became volcanic fissures from which lava erupted. These fissures allowed magma that had been ponded in a lava summit lake to drain onto the ground surface as lava flows lower down the mountain. This was close to a residential subdivision known as Leilani Estates, where a new volcanic cone has since developed. Kilauea is buttressed on its north-west side by the enormous mass of Mauna Loa volcano , but its south-east slopes face the ocean and are unsupported. The magma from beneath the volcano usually erupts from the summit of the volcano, and there was a spectacular lava lake there in March. However two rift zones (areas where the volcano is splitting apart), extending east and south-west from the summit, can make it possible for lava to erupt … [Read more...] about Has the Kilauea eruption created a new volcano on Hawaii?
Someone poured 24 gallons of gasoline on a wet baseball field and set it on fire to dry it out
A high school baseball team had to postpone a game over the weekend after the baseball field was set on fire in a bid to dry it out. The bizarre incident unfolded on Saturday in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where the local high school team faced having its game delayed due to adverse weather conditions. Playing baseball on a wet field is borderline impossible and so somebody went to extreme lengths in an attempt to address the problem. The solution, however, did more harm than good as 24 gallons of gasoline were poured onto the field, which was subsequently set on fire. Needless to say, the plan didn't work and no game took place at Ciuccoli Field. A video posted on Twitter on Saturday morning showed a portion on the field burning away, while someone attempts to keep the fire under control by sweeping what appears to be soil onto it. The town reported the incident on its Facebook page, indicating that the incident was under investigation and that nobody had been injured. "A poor … [Read more...] about Someone poured 24 gallons of gasoline on a wet baseball field and set it on fire to dry it out
