Asian Games Postponement: What it Means for India and its Athletes
For someone like shuttler Saina Nehwal, it could well serve as a fresh lifeline but for star tennis player Sania Mirza and archer Tarundeep Rai the last opportunity to represent India at a multi-disciplinary big-ticket event seem to have slipped away with the postponement of the Hangzhou Asian Games. How does postponement affect athletes individually? Saina, who is ranked outside top-15 in the world, had skipped the national selection trials for the CWG and the Asiad since she did not want to put her body to rigours of more games between international tournaments. Now the gap between the CWG and Asiad, whenever the new dates are announced, could allow her to force her way back into the Indian team and earn another shot at winning an Asian Games medal, provided the national federation considers her form near the Games. Sania, who is 35, has already announced that 2022 will be her last season. The most successful Indian woman tennis player now will have to make a fresh … [Read more...] about Asian Games Postponement: What it Means for India and its Athletes
Compound Archery Stealing the Spotlight as Recurve Team Fail to Get Their Act Together
Unlike always where recurve archery, an Olympic event, hogged more of the spotlight in India, this year it will be the compound archers who will look to make hay while the sun shines thanks to the Asian Games in Jakarta. The compound team has been tipped for more glory than their recurve counterparts. The dependable Abhishek Verma, who guided India to a Gold medal in 2014 in Incheon, will spearhead the Indian challenge in compound archery as they look to retain their title. For the veteran Verma though, recognition has eluded him and so has financial support as compound archery is not among the Olympic events. "Despite the achievements, no one takes notice of us and somehow we are yet to grab the headlines. Medals are the only ways to get attention and attract some eyeballs. This fuels my hunger to strive harder and go for medals," Verma told Firstpost. In Jakarta, the compound archery events this year feature the team events in men’s, women’s and mixed team categories only … [Read more...] about Compound Archery Stealing the Spotlight as Recurve Team Fail to Get Their Act Together

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday asked the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) to reconsider its decision and include high jumper Tejaswin Shankar in the national squad for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Shankar, India’s high jump national record holder, was knocking the doors of the Delhi High Court following his exclusion from the 2022 Commonwealth Games squad. He was not included in the list of 37 names picked by the federation that held a selection committee meeting last week. “The court has recorded that he is the major contender for this year and only two people above him have the better jumps in the world. He met the qualification marks set by the AFI itself. The federation has been actively told to consider his participation in the selection meet,” his counsel Adv Malak Bhatt told IANS.
