When you groggily roll out of bed and make breakfast, the government edges up to your kitchen table, too. Unlike you, it's perky. It's an unseen force in your morning. The government makes sure you can see the nutrients in your cereal. It fusses over your toast, insisting that the flour it comes from has no more than 75 insect fragments and one rodent hair per 50 grams. The government also tends to your coffee, mandating that no more than 10% of your beans be moldy. Its satellites inform the weather forecast on your phone for the day ahead. The government weighs in on the water consumption in your bathroom and controls the fluoride in your toothpaste. That’s all before you leave home. The government is going to be hanging with you on and off, mostly on, until you turn off the lamp last thing at night — no new incandescent bulbs, please, under a new rule. The world of federal regulation seems both boundless and microscopic. It touches what you touch. It lends a helping … [Read more...] about From AM to PM, the fickle force of government is with you

“She’s 10”: Child rape victim’s abortion denial sparks outrage on Twitter
A 10-year-old rape victim in Ohio was denied an abortion, sparking outrage online as many Republican-led states strip away reproductive rights following the Supreme Court 's overruling of Roe v. Wade . Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Indianapolis, received a call last Monday, three days after the Court's ruling, from a child abuse doctor in Ohio who had a 10-year-old girl in their office who was six weeks and three days pregnant, and therefore ineligible to receive an abortion in the state, according to a report from The Indianapolis Star . The child was unable to receive an abortion in Ohio because the state bans the procedure after six weeks when fetal cardiac activity may be detected. Some Republican-led states banned abortions at that point, claiming that a heartbeat can be detected within that timeframe. However, these so-called "fetal heartbeat" bans on abortion have faced criticism from medical experts , many of whom argue there is no heartbeat … [Read more...] about “She’s 10”: Child rape victim’s abortion denial sparks outrage on Twitter

Boris Johnson under pressure to say what he knew about Chris Pincher and when

Tory chiefs finally withdrew the whip from Mr Pincher last night, almost 24 hours after he resigned as deputy chief whip, following allegations of drunkenly groping two men at a private members' club. And fresh allegations emerged against Chris Pincher after the Prime Minister bowed to pressure when an investigation was launched by Parliament's sexual misconduct watchdog on Friday. With the whip suspended, Mr Pincher will sit as an independent in the Commons but was remaining as the MP for Tamworth in Staffordshire, despite opponents saying his position is untenable. The Prime Minister had been resisting calls to act until the Independent Complaints and Grievance Scheme (ICGS) launched an investigation after receiving a formal complaint. Kochi City police begin crackdown on drunk driving as accidents soar
The Kochi City police are back on the roads for what they describe as reinstilling among motorists the fear of being punished if caught driving under the influence of alcohol. The drive against drunk driving has been adopted with a vigour akin to pre-pandemic times, considering the alarming increase in accidents ever since the drive was stalled with the COVID-19 outbreak. The police are of the view that motorists have lost the fear of getting caught if found drunk while driving and are increasingly emboldened to do so. Over 20 cases were registered in less than a week at the Palarivattom station alone. “For one thing, there has been a sizeable increase in the number of accidents ever since the drive against drunk driving had gone slack owing to the pandemic. Besides, the number of vehicles has gone up manifold thanks to people’s preference for own vehicles. The state of being drunk coupled with low visibility during night adds to the rate of accidents,” said C.H. Nagaraju, District … [Read more...] about Kochi City police begin crackdown on drunk driving as accidents soar

ROME (AP) — Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose $44 billion bid to buy Twitter remains in limbo, used the social media platform to announce he had met with Pope Francis. “Honored to meet @Pontifex yesterday,” Musk tweeted of the Friday afternoon audience, alongside a photo showing Musk, Francis and four of Musk’s teenage children. Musk’s tweet followed one of a street scene in Venice, suggesting he might have had other stops on his tour. Francis frequently meets with high-profile figures in strictly private audiences that are held in a reception room of the Vatican hotel where he lives. A common talking point he uses when meeting with corporate CEOs is to appeal for them to use wealth and technology to help the poorest while caring for God’s creation. On June 21, Twitter’s board … [Read more...] about Elon Musk Meets Pope Francis, Uses Twitter to Announce the Audience

Boris Johnson and Canadian PM Justin Trudeau joke about who has bigger plane at crunch summit
Boris Johnson and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau compared the size of their official planes when they held talks in Bavaria today. The pair met on the margins of the G7 Summit in Germany - and began by discussing their aircraft. Mr Johnson told his Canadian counterpart he spotted “Canada Force One” on the Tarmac at Munich Airport when he touched down this morning having flown eight hours from the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Rwandan capital, Kigali. “Can Force One”, as the plane is known, is an Airbus A310 categorised as a CC-150 Polaris. Mr Trudeau joked that Mr Johnson’s Airbus A321 plane was bigger - to which the British PM insisted that his jet is “very modest”. Boris Johnson sat down with Canadian PM Justin Trudeau at the G7 summit in Bavaria ( Image: PA) The Tory leader has been forced to use the smaller of his two jets because Prince Charles had first call on the Airbus A330 RAF Voyager to fly to Rwanda, because of protocol.
