Mark Phelan Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EST Nov 24, 2018 Getting a used car with a warranty is a good idea, but you should shop around just like when you choose the car itself. Nearly every automaker has a programs to inspect and guarantee aspects of used cars. They call them certified pre-owned, or CPO, programs. A new survey by the car-buying research site www.iseecars.com lists the brands and models with the lowest premiums for CPO coverage. “The average CPO vehicle costs 3.6 percent more than its non-CPO equivalent, and consumers are faced with deciding if the terms of the warranty and certification are worth the added cost,” said iSeeCars CEO Phong Ly. “However, certain models have significantly lower-than-average CPO premiums that can bring peace of mind to used car buyers for just a few hundred dollars more.” Nearly every automaker has a CPO program, and no two are alike. Shoppers should compare to get the best combination … [Read more...] about Certified used car survey lists highest, lowest prices

Mark Phelan Detroit Free Press Published 7:31 p.m. UTC Jul 27, 2018 Owners of big SUVs drive their vehicles more miles every year than any other type of vehicle, according to data from a website that lists more than 4 million new and used vehicles for sale. The Chevrolet Suburban is the most-driven car, with dealers reporting an average of 14,299 miles a year – 25.1 percent more than the average – according to auto research and shopping website iseecars.com. The GMC Yukon, Chevy Tahoe and Toyota Sequoia – all large SUVs – finished Nos. 2-4. Honda’s Odyssey minivan was the only non-SUV to make the top 10. Can recalls issued for a specific vehicle signal whether that model is reliable or not? A study by research site iSeeCars.com suggests that a high rate of recalls does indicate the likelihood of overall reliability problems. For the study, iSeeCars.com compared the vehicles with the most and fewest recalls to the Consumer Reports reliability ratings. With a few minor exceptions, cars with high recall rates got low reliability ratings, and those with the lowest recall rates got good reliability ratings. Consumer Reports' scores are based on a survey of vehicle ownership experiences among the magazine's subscribers. The results aren't dissimilar to other reliability surveys -- like that from J.D. Power -- which survey a larger body of owners. "Consumers can use high recall rates as an indicator of low car quality," iSeeCars concludes. The study used data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to see which vehicles have the most and fewest recalls … [Read more...] about Cars with the most and fewest recalls
Jamie LaReau Detroit Free Press Published 10:00 p.m. UTC May 30, 2018 Consumers are finding it harder to buy big-ticket vehicles. A boost in interest rates and a spike in gasoline prices are “chipping away at America’s wallet,” said Charles Chesbrough, senior economist with Cox Automotive in Ann Arbor. As a result, industry experts expect new vehicle sales in May to be flat to slightly lower than the year-ago period. May "will be a bad month overall based on what dealers tell us,” said Jeremy Alicandri, director at New York-area consulting firm Maryann Keller & Associates. The national average gas price is $2.97, according to AAA. That’s up from $2.37 a year earlier. The current U.S. prime interest rate is 4.75 percent, up from 4 percent in May 2017, according to FedPrimeRate.com. Those higher costs are cooling demand for pickup trucks. Lower consumer incentives are also making already-expensive vehicles even more … [Read more...] about Higher interest rates, gas prices could slow May new car sales
