LaReau Detroit Free Press Published 6:00 AM EDT Mar 19, 2019 A plan to turn Chevrolet Cruze compact cars into an international ride-hailing fleet would have kept General Motors assembly plant in Lordstown, Ohio, running possibly up to five more years. But GM CEO Mary Barra rejected the deal, sealing the plant's fate when the last Cruze rolled off the line earlier this month, indefinitely idling the facility, as first reported in an online publication called The Vindicator. "If that deal was true, it could have kept 3,000 people working in Lordstown, plus all the parts suppliers on the side," said Dave Green, president of UAW Local 1112 in Lordstown, told the Free Press. GM also said it will move Cadillac back to Michigan from New York to give it new and improved vehicles to sell in a move to revive the brand's sales. Here are six stories on GM that stand out this year: New pickups The redesigned 2019 GMC Sierra Denali and 2019 Chevrolet Silverado pickups are GM's big moneymakers. The Chevrolet Suburban is the most-driven car, with dealers reporting an average of 14,299 miles a year – 25.1 percent more than the average – according to auto research and shopping website iseecars.com. The GMC Yukon, Chevy Tahoe and Toyota Sequoia – all large SUVs – finished Nos. 2-4. Honda’s Odyssey minivan was the only non-SUV to make the top 10. The highest Ford vehicle was the Expedition large SUV, coming in ninth with 13,112 miles drive per year. Dealers and individuals report the odometer readings on used cars they list with iseecars.com.
