The city council of Haven, Kansas , voted 3-2 on Monday to reverse a unanimous decision they made May 2 to remove "In God We Trust" decals from the city's police cars following an uproar from some in the community. The city attorney said the Haven City Council's previous decision emerged from a desire to maintain a separation between church and state , according to local KWCH. The follow-up vote on Monday was not on the city council's original agenda, which had to move their weekly forum to a nearby community center because of how many attended. Seven people spoke at the typically uneventful meeting, where all but one supported the decals. Clips of Camille Vasquez giving Amber Heard “dirty looks” go viral
Footage of Johnny Depp 's lawyer Camille Vasquez has gone viral after the attorney seemingly gave Amber Heard "dirty looks" in court during the multi-million dollar defamation trial in Fairfax, Virginia. The lawyer has become something of an overnight star thanks to her performance in the courtroom , with Depp fans praising her on social media . The trial is now in its fifth week and Heard's cross-examination came to an end on Tuesday (May 17). Depp, 58, is suing Heard for $50 million, while Heard, 36, is counter-suing her former partner for $100 million. The lawsuit stems from a 2018 op-ed Heard wrote for The Washington Post in which she said she was a domestic abuse survivor. The piece never mentioned Depp by name but his legal team argue the insinuation resulted in reputational damage and extensive financial losses. Both parties have alleged that the other was violent towards them throughout their marriage, which ended in 2016. A TikTok user shared footage of … [Read more...] about Clips of Camille Vasquez giving Amber Heard “dirty looks” go viral
‘Dancing, not war’: Signs of normality in Ukraine’s shattered Kharkiv
Three women plant flowers on a roundabout in central Kharkiv, Ukraine, while not far away men fill sandbags for a defensive barrier on the north of the city, the side closest to Russia. It is a stark illustration of how people in the war-battered city in the north east are attempting to recapture some essence of normal life, even though Russian aggression lurks not far away. Kharkiv, the regional capital, has been battered by the conflict, enduring an assault by Moscow's forces lasting several days and fighting in its suburbs, before weathering regular salvoes of shelling. But the noose around Ukraine's second-largest city has been loosening in recent days, even as the war rages elsewhere. However, much local infrastructure has been ruined and many residents have yet to return. "We are trying to keep the city alive," a city hall spokeswoman told AFP. The city of 1.5 million people in peacetime "is huge and some people can't move or go to work without buses", she said, … [Read more...] about ‘Dancing, not war’: Signs of normality in Ukraine’s shattered Kharkiv
Carlson: Democrats Have Decided Rather Than Convince You, They Will Change the Electorate
Tuesday on FNC’s “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” host Tucker Carlson defended prior statements regarding so-called great replacement theory pertaining to the U.S. electorate and how Democrats had openly claimed shifts in demographics would be to their political advantage. Carlson’s remarks come in the wake of the Buffalo, NY shooting in which the suspect allegedly used the theory for justification for actions. Many on the left had attacked the FNC host, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who Carlson called a coward for declining to appear on his FNC show. Transcript as follows: Last May, a 17-year-old high school senior called Payton Gendron received an assignment in his economics class. The assignment asked, “What do you want to do when you retire?” He answered, “Commit murder-suicide.” Gendron’s teacher immediately reported his threat to authorities who sent him to the emergency room for a psychiatric evaluation. Gendron was there for just 20 hours, as he … [Read more...] about Carlson: Democrats Have Decided Rather Than Convince You, They Will Change the Electorate
Ukrainian Archbishop Denounces Russia’s ‘Imperial Ambitions’
ROME — Ukrainian Major Archbishop Sviatoslav Shevchuk said Tuesday that despite Russia’s sham justifications for its invasion of Ukraine, the real reason is its longstanding “imperial ambitions.” “Heavy, bloody fighting has been going on in eastern Ukraine over the last night and the last day,” Archbishop Shevchuk notes in a video message . “The Donetsk and Luhansk regions are on fire. The so-called missile terrorism continues, and Russian missiles hit wounded Chernihiv region again.” “Similarly, the Lviv region suffered the largest rocket attack during the war,” he adds in his rundown of the situation. “In the same way, our Odesa region suffers from missile strikes, in particular from the Black Sea.” “War is always devastating, and according to official United Nations figures, if the war continues, nine out of ten Ukrainians will be on the brink of poverty,” he continued, while noting that Ukraine has already lost most of its economic potential and the amount of humanitarian … [Read more...] about Ukrainian Archbishop Denounces Russia’s ‘Imperial Ambitions’
Joan Didion’s Magic Trick
This article was featured in One Story to Read Today, a newsletter in which our editors recommend a single must-read from The Atlantic , Monday through Friday. Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick
Fact Check: Was Clark County mom silenced over “graphic” school assignment?
Posts on social media suggested that the mother of a Nevada teenager was cut off at a school board meeting for reading "pornographic" material that her daughter was supposedly "required" to recite in class. The video, which was shared by the Twitter account Libs of TikTok and spread widely on Tuesday, claims the student was "required" to read from "a graphic assignment," which the mother began to cite before being "cut off" for inappropriateness. The incident added fuel to broader debate over the censorship of books and educational material across the United States. The Claim On May 17, 2022, Twitter account Libs of TikTok posted a video that it claimed showed a mother of a Nevada student being "cut off" while reciting a "graphic assignment" given to her daughter at school. Trump-backed candidate who said Christ would “reign in Idaho” loses primary
Janice McGeachin, the Trump-endorsed candidate in Idaho's gubernatorial race, lost Tuesday's Republican primary to incumbent Governor Brad Little. At the time that the race was called for Little by the Associated Press, McGeachin, who currently serves as the state's lieutenant governor, had only received about 31 percent of the GOP vote. McGeachin, who was endorsed by former President Donald Trump in November , has been arguably the most extreme candidate that the former president has endorsed in the midterms. She has ties to the far right, having appeared and defended her participation at a March conference held by white nationalist Nick Fuentes, as well as maintaining connections with anti-government militia the Three Percenters . She also ran on a campaign promising a total ban on abortion that makes no exceptions for rape, incest or the health of the mother. She has even gone so far as to accuse her opponent—who recently signed a state ban on most abortions after six … [Read more...] about Trump-backed candidate who said Christ would “reign in Idaho” loses primary
Trump urges Oz to ‘declare victory’ before vote tally complete in Pennsylvania
Former president Donald Trump on Wednesday began sowing doubt about the results of the neck-and-neck Republican Senate primary in Pennsylvania between his endorsed candidate, celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz, and hedge fund manager David McCormick, urging Oz to "declare victory" before all the votes are counted. Pennsylvania, a state Trump won in 2016, but lost in 2020, was at the center of his baseless claims that fraud cost him the election, and he suggested Wednesday something nefarious could happen in Oz's race. Trump falsely claimed victory in Pennsylvania in 2020 and sought to stop mail-in ballots from being counted. On Wednesday, the former president sought to declare on his social media site, Truth Social, that Oz had won, even though the race has not been called. He derided the mail-in ballots, posting: "Here we go again! In Pennsylvania they are unable to count the Mail-in Ballots. It is a BIG MESS. Our Country should go to paper ballots, with same day voting. Just done in … [Read more...] about Trump urges Oz to ‘declare victory’ before vote tally complete in Pennsylvania
Father pays tribute to “quirky” teen who died after beach hole collapsed
A grieving dad has paid a moving tribute to his lost son after a day playing at a Toms River, New Jersey, beach turned tragic for his family when two of his children were buried alive in the sand . The freak accident happened on Tuesday after a huge 10-foot hole the siblings had dug with Frisbees on the Jersey Shore collapsed with them inside. Dad Todd Caverly, a photographer who is taking strength from his Christian faith as he comes to terms with the loss of his 18-year-old son Levi, paid a heartfelt tribute to his boy, telling Newsweek in an email: "Levi was himself. He was odd. He was quirky. He was not real concerned with what others thought. He knew Jesus Christ. He was involved in the worship team at church, and was the drummer in a teen/young adult worship band. He was a tech nut and loved to program. "The truth is that Scripture says that all our days are numbered. That there is nothing we can do to add a single hour to our life. He knew that. Matthew 6: 25-34." … [Read more...] about Father pays tribute to “quirky” teen who died after beach hole collapsed
