"I'm very upset that this has happened," Tiera Hutson said. "Anything could have happened." On Monday, after spending the night with his father, her son Braylen boarded the bus early Monday to head to Childs Elementary, she said. Hutson noticed the child had left his backpack at home but when she went to the school to give it to him, staffers said he wasn't there. After confirming that the bus had reached the school, she learned from staffers that the second grader had apparently been left behind when the driver returned to a district transportation lot about a mile away. BARRON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin man accused of abducting 13-year-old Jayme Closs and holding her captive for three months made up his mind to take her when he spotted the teenager getting on a school bus near her home, authorities said Monday. Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, told detectives that “he knew that was the girl he was going to take,” and he made two aborted trips to her family’s home before finally carrying out an attack in which he fatally shot Jayme’s mother in front of her, according to a criminal complaint filed hours before Patterson’s first court appearance. Prosecutors charged him with kidnapping Jayme and killing her parents Oct. 15 near Barron, about 90 miles northeast of Minneapolis. He was also charged with armed robbery. Barron County, Wis. — A criminal complaint says a Wisconsin man accused of kidnapping 13-year-old Jayme Closs spotted her getting on a school bus one day and made up his mind to take her. Prosecutors filed the criminal complaint Monday charging Jake Thomas Patterson, 21, with two counts of intentional homicide, kidnapping and burglary. Investigators believe Patterson broke into the Closs home near Barron, Wisconsin, in October 2018, killed Jayme's parents and kidnapped her. The complaint says he confessed.The criminal complaint says Patterson told investigators he was driving to his job at a cheese factory one day near Almena, Wisconsin, when he stopped behind a school bus and watched Jayme get on.
