As India strongly objected to China’s Belt and Road Initiative at the recently concluded Second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference in Beijing, First Secretary Priyanka Sohoni’s microphone curiously went silent for some time due to a “technical glitch” while she was raising New Delhi’s concerns regarding the controversial project. Sources in New Delhi, however, refused to accept “technical glitch” as the reason behind the mike failure at the UN meet held from October 14 to 16. UN under-secretary general Liu Zhenmin asked Sohoni to continue her speech. “We are confronting some technical problems and played the video of the next speaker. I am sorry for that,” Liu said after the mike was restored at the conference hall. Sohoni said, “We share the international community’s desire for enhancing physical connectivity and believe it should bring greater economic benefits to all in an equitable and balanced manner. There have been some references to the Belt and Road … [Read more...] about Indian Diplomat’s ‘Mic Glitch’ While Criticising China’s BRI at UN Meet Lights a Fuse in New Delhi

India’s tryst with baseball
When superstar sports agent J B Bernstein set foot in India for the "Million Dollar Arm" contest, he was confident of finding the stars as he felt there just had to be a large number of Indian men who had the raw talent to pitch a baseball. Bernstein created the "Million Dollar Arm" contest in India, which yielded the first two Indian men to ever sign pro sports contracts in the U.S. - Dinesh Patel and Rinku Singh, both hailing from Lucknow. "Million Dollar Arm", a timeless reflection on baseball and the American dream as well as a tale of victory over incredible odds, has been published as a book by Simon & Schuster and also adapted as a movie by Craig Gillespie from a screenplay written by Tom McCarthy. Bernstein flew to Mumbai in 2007 to find baseball talent in an untapped market through his reality television competition with a huge cash prize and a chance to become the first native of India to sign a contract with an American major-league team. "Cricket and baseball … [Read more...] about India’s tryst with baseball
New species of non-venomous snake recorded in Mizoram
GUWAHATI Herpetologists in Mizoram have recorded a new species of non-venomous snake living away from sources of water unlike its six recognised sister-species. The new-to-science snake named “lenrul”, meaning high-elevation snake in the Mizo language, is the only one of its kind in India found beyond 1,700 metres above the mean sea level. The snake’s scientific name is Herpetoreas murlen , derived from the place it was found – the 200 sq. km Murlen National Park in Champhai district of Mizoram. The colubrid (belonging to the Colubridae family) snake, the seventh nominal species in the genus Herpetoreas , has been described in the latest issue of Salamandra , a German journal of herpetology or study of reptiles and amphibians. The study was authored by Hmar Tlawmte Lalremsanga and Lal Biakzuala of Mizoram University’s Department of Zoology, Amit Kumar Bal of Amity Institute of Forestry and Wildlife, and Gernot Vogel of the Society for South East Asian Herpetology … [Read more...] about New species of non-venomous snake recorded in Mizoram
Putin is Winning the Energy War as Europe’s Paradoxical Drama on Russian Gas Imports Rages on
Amid the Russia-Ukraine war and all the ruckus about Russian energy imports, the West is emerging as a champion in doublespeak. Even as it wished for India to not buy Russian oil at a discount, the West has vacillated on the issue of buying Russian energy itself, leading to an increase in imports. The European Union is in a particularly hypocritical position, divided by Russia’s ‘blackmailing’ tactics. Not only is it far from weaning off Russian energy imports, but the EU is also on its way to complying with Russia’s ruble payment condition. If media headlines are anything to go by, if at one moment the EU is imposing sanctions on Russian gas imports so as to not bankroll Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in the next moment, it is scrambling to circumvent the same sanctions and bankroll Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Indeed, the bloc is divided over how far its boycott of Russian gas can go and Putin’s “pay in ruble” curveball did the rest of the damage. But after hoodwinking EU countries … [Read more...] about Putin is Winning the Energy War as Europe’s Paradoxical Drama on Russian Gas Imports Rages on
FTSE and pound slide as 40-year high inflation spooks traders
The FTSE 100 and the pound both sank lower on Wednesday after traders digested the latest dramatic UK inflation figures, which stoked fears of a recession later this year. Figures from the Office for National Statistics revealed that Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rocketed to 9% last month on the back of a surge in energy prices. Retailers were once again among the losers over the fear rising prices will hit consumer spending in the coming months. The FTSE 100 ended the day down 80.26 points, or 1.07%, at 7,438.09 points. Commodities boost London markets as supermarkets slump over food price fears
The FTSE 100 gained further ground as stronger oil and commodity prices helped London keep up its strong start to the week. Positivity around the Covid-19 situation in China gave crude prices a lift, which subsequently moved BP and Shell shares higher. This helped offset supermarket stocks, such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s, which drifted lower after Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey warned of “apocalyptic” food price rises. The FTSE 100 ended the day up 53.55 points, or 0.72%, at 7,518.35 points. Left parties to campaign against price rice between May 25 and 31
The Left parties would organise a nationwide campaign between May 25 and May 31 against price rice and unemployment, said CPI leader D. Raja. Addressing reporters in Chennai on Wednesday, he said increase in the price of petroleum products had a bearing on the price of essential commodities, and inflation was going up. “People are going through hardship, but the government at the Centre remains insensitive. There is a need to strengthen the public distribution system and essential commodities should be made available,” he said, reiterating the need for releasing ₹7,500 to families living below the poverty line. Urging the government to release funds for the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, he also wanted legislation guaranteeing urban employment. “The government should also legislate to provide for unemployment allowance and these issues will be highlighted in the campaign,” he added. Mr. Raja said the economy was in a bad shape and the value of the … [Read more...] about Left parties to campaign against price rice between May 25 and 31
Steve Schmidt discusses violent extremism, the GOP and John McCain
Political strategist Steve Schmidt has made headlines recently over new revelations about his professional—and personal—relationship with the late Senator John McCain , as well as with the McCain family. Schmidt, to hear him tell it, has nothing to sell or promote with this discussion of a campaign that took place a decade and a half ago. He's merely setting the record straight, and drawing a throughline from our nation's infancy to Sarah Palin to the present. Schmidt joined Declassified With Naveed Jamali to discuss his frustration with McCain's choice of running mate in 2008 and the trajectory of the party he very publicly left in 2018 . What follows is a lightly edited transcript of parts of Schmidt's appearance on Declassified . This past weekend, there was a horrible massacre, a terrorist attack, in Buffalo. It brings so many questions. One of them is this idea of how you cover something like that, without making it feel like this is the first case of … [Read more...] about Steve Schmidt discusses violent extremism, the GOP and John McCain
Border reopening brings influx of visitors
FOR German tourists Preminy Kangatharan and Suthushan Sivananthan, staying in Johor Baru even for just one night was a trip worth the time. The couple from Cologne, both 36, made a stop in Johor as part of their three-week trip around the world and were pleasantly surprised by the wide variety of delicious food that the southern state has to offer. Preminy, who works in the marketing sector, said the city left a lasting impression on her especially after trying the local Hainanese- style coffee at one of the kopitiam (coffeeshops) in Jalan Tan Hiok Nee. “We had such an enjoyable experience; we complimented the owner and also immediately made a positive Google review before leaving the shop. “We mostly travel for food and make it a point to sample the local delicacies. My favourite in Johor Baru is the traditional Nyonya kuih, which I bought extra. “We crossed over to Johor Baru from Singapore and will be making our way up to Kuala Lumpur. We found that things are much cheaper … [Read more...] about Border reopening brings influx of visitors
India Must Lead Quad Effort to Pull Out Sri Lanka from Clutches of China’s Debt Trap Diplomacy
The statement issued by Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was nothing short of an intimation, nay confirmation, of the apocalyptic economic crisis that the island nation confronts. The numbers thrown by Mr Wickremesinghe are self-explanatory of the mess that he will need to clean up to put Sri Lanka back on track. Government revenues cover only 40 per cent of the expenditure being incurred. The fiscal deficit is around 13 per cent of GDP. The foreign exchange reserves are virtually non-existent. According to Wickremesinghe, “It is a challenge for the treasury to find USD 1 million.” Petrol stocks are down to just one day. Sri Lanka is looking at power cuts of around 15 hours a day because a quarter of the electricity is produced from oil which the government has no money to buy. There are huge shortages of medicines. Shortages of virtually every other commodity, including food, are inescapable. With the government being “compelled to print money” to pay … [Read more...] about India Must Lead Quad Effort to Pull Out Sri Lanka from Clutches of China’s Debt Trap Diplomacy
