A rare and strange fish from a species that dates back to the time of the dinosaurs has washed up on the U.S. East Coast. The dead Atlantic sturgeon was spotted by naturalist and photographer Allen Sklar on the shore of Assateague Island, a 37-mile-long strip of land along the coasts of Maryland and Virginia. He took several images of the large fish, which measured about 3 feet in length. "I drive the 12 miles of beach about 100 days a year and so see a lot of stuff others don't," Sklar, who specializes in Assateague's history, wildlife and ecology, told Newsweek . "This was the second sturgeon I have seen [dead] in 27 years of driving on the island." The Atlantic sturgeon ( Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus ) is a large fish found in rivers and coastal waters from Canada to Florida. It can reach lengths of 14 feet and a weight of more than 800 pounds, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. These fish, which generally live up to about 60 years, … [Read more...] about Strange rare fish from time of the dinosaurs washes up on East Coast

This chapter of the Holocaust heroism is scarcely remembered in Israel. Nor is it part of the official curriculum in schools. But the few remaining members of Hungary’s Jewish underground want their story told. Dismayed at the prospect of being forgotten, they are determined to keep memories of their mission alive. “The story of the struggle to save tens of thousands needs to be a part of the chronicles of the people of Israel,” said David Gur, 97, one of a handful of members still alive. “It is a lighthouse during the period of the Holocaust, a lesson … [Read more...] about 78 years on, Jewish Holocaust rescuers want their story told
Toxic Fumes Are Released From Burning Train That Derailed in Ohio
A rail operator on Monday released toxic fumes from several derailed train cars that it said were at risk of exploding in East Palestine, Ohio, after the authorities ordered residents on both sides of the state’s border with Pennsylvania to evacuate to avoid a deadly threat. The train derailed on Friday night , with 50 of its 100 cars running off the tracks, igniting a fire that left much of the town in smoke and prompted repeated calls for evacuation. “We are ordering you to leave,” Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said on Monday at a news conference. “This is a matter of life and death.” He added that there was “grave danger” of inhaling fumes from chemicals produced by the release, which the authorities identified as phosgene and hydrogen chloride. In high concentrations, both chemicals can cause severe and life-threatening respiratory issues. The release of the fumes began late Monday afternoon and was “completed successfully,” Norfolk Southern, the rail operator, said in a … [Read more...] about Toxic Fumes Are Released From Burning Train That Derailed in Ohio
