Children’s social care: ‘Once in a generation’ chance to overhaul system in England, warns charity
Now is the time to snap up a "once in a generation" opportunity and take "radical action" to overhaul children's social care in England, a charity has said. Former teacher Josh MacAlister was commissioned by the government to lead an independent review of the current system and on Monday published his findings calling for a "five-year comprehensive ambitious reform and investment programme" to improve the lives of children in care and their families. The review has made more than 80 recommendations, including calls to rebalance resources "to back those who care for and love children". And there has also been a call for a windfall tax to be imposed on the profits made by the largest private children's home providers to fund the radical overhaul. Lynn Perry, chief executive of Barnardo's, told Sky News: "This has clearly been a far-reaching report - the number of recommendations are illustrative of the fact that this is a system that requires radical reform and has been under … [Read more...] about Children’s social care: ‘Once in a generation’ chance to overhaul system in England, warns charity

South Carolina law firm is turning 100, still going strong
BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) — The Beaufort law firm of Harvey and Battey — whose attorneys have served as some of the leading political figures in Beaufort County and the state — turns 100 years old this month. That makes it the oldest law firm in Beaufort County, said Bill Harvey III, the grandson of the founder, and one of the oldest in South Carolina. However, the century-old firm, housed in a nondescript building on Craven Street in Beaufort’s historic downtown, is not gazing in the rear-view mirror, Harvey adds. It is using the milestone as a springboard for future expansion. “Generally, when you think of something that is as old as 100 years, you think of it as dying — old and dying,” Harvey told The Beaufort Gazette and Island Packet. “We are not. We have a very exciting, very active group of younger attorneys.” W. Brantley Harvey Sr. founded Harvey and Battey in 1922. Harvey III, Harvey Sr.’s grandson and the third generation of Harveys in the firm, credits “dedication … [Read more...] about South Carolina law firm is turning 100, still going strong

Buffalo shooting’s wounds need a strong salve, residents say
By AARON MORRISON BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Shenaya Ann Washington and a close friend cleared a small patch of grass at the base of a utility pole on Riley Street. They dug a hole there and planted a red rose bush seedling. Next to it, they leaned 10 prayer candles against the pole. Washington said she chose that spot to memorialize the victims of last weekend’s massacre at Tops Friendly Market because it is closest to the store entrance she had always used as a part-time worker for Instacart, the grocery delivery service. Sometimes when she would exit the store, Aaron Salter Jr., the slain retired police officer who worked security at Tops, would help Washington back to her car with the grocery orders, she said. The shooter, whose racist attack deeply wounded east Buffalo’s Black community, has stolen much more than the neighborhood’s only grocery store and the sense of peace many residents felt in the cherished community gathering spot. “He took away people who did for the … [Read more...] about Buffalo shooting’s wounds need a strong salve, residents say
Rail union leader says blackouts a ‘realistic possibility’ in biggest strike in a generation
Blackouts, fuel shortages or empty shelves are a “realistic possibility” if ministers refuse to back down over the biggest rail strike since privatisation, a union chief said today. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch spoke to the Mirror after closing a ballot of 40,000 workers at 15 companies and Network Rail - over pay, conditions and 2,500 Network Rail maintenance job cuts. A result is expected tonight or tomorrow morning - with Mr Lynch expecting members would overwhelmingly back strike action. He said walkouts could begin as soon as mid-June and refused to rule out them lasting into next year - or escalating into a general strike. He warned Tory ministers plan to “shut virtually every ticket office in Britain”, meaning the “end of passenger assistance” as the elderly and vulnerable are directed to apps and websites. Promising a “rolling campaign” of roadshows into left-behind towns and villages he added: “This is a regular industrial dispute. It’s not one with a political … [Read more...] about Rail union leader says blackouts a ‘realistic possibility’ in biggest strike in a generation
SG victims of spoofed work emails suffer losses of over S$70mil, 149 victims in 2022
SINGAPORE: Since the start of the year, at least 149 people have fallen prey to a scam involving spoofed work emails, with losses amounting to at least S$70.8mil (RM225.24mil). In a statement on Saturday (May 21), the police said the scammers, using a hacked email account or email address, would impersonate the colleagues, business partners or suppliers of the victims. Often times, these spoofed email addresses would include subtle misspellings, or replacement letters, which might not be obvious at first glance. Victims would get emails informing them that there was a change in bank account number, with a request that they make payment to other bank accounts. Having been duped into believing that the emails were genuine, the victims would transfer funds to the new accounts. In some cases, victims were instructed to purchase gift cards and provide the activation keys for their supervisors. Victims realised they had fallen prey to a scam only when … [Read more...] about SG victims of spoofed work emails suffer losses of over S$70mil, 149 victims in 2022
The Legend of Charli XCX Grows
The Atlantic ’s style guide for writers bans the use of the word iconic , as it does many other words that are overused to the point of meaninglessness. So it will be hard for me to write about the delightful new Charli XCX album, Crash , at least judging by how the artist and her fans have been speaking. The term has shown up in press releases and tweets to refer to the singer, her planned tour, her album’s track list, and the Nintendo ad she soundtracked . The I-word gets thrown around like this a lot lately. A president or a movie star can be iconic, in modern parlance, but so can a Taco Bell menu item or the facial expression of a Real Housewife. This slang clearly points to a fame-hungry, self-aware, exaggeration-prone culture. It probably also represents nostalgia, in our era of niches, for the sort of acclaim that everyone agrees on. But maybe, and most poignantly, the term also embodies a longing for renown that is static and lasting, that won’t burn out from … [Read more...] about The Legend of Charli XCX Grows
Stronger payment checks will help protect online shoppers from fraud
Online shoppers may find they need to confirm their identity more often when making payments from Monday, as changes to combat fraud come into force. The new strong customer authentication (SCA) requirements are a set of rules that will change how people confirm their identity when making online purchases. The British Retail Consortium (BRC) said customers will be asked to prove their identity when making a purchase, by confirming two of three “factors”: 1. Something they are – using a fingerprint or facial ID, for example; 2. Something they know, such as a passcode or password; Recommended ‘More cases every day’: Doctor warns of rising monkeypox transmission Brexit has increased risk of danger foods reaching UK, watchdog warns 3.
