Supreme Court Associate Justice Clarence Thomas argued in a Friday opinion that the nation's top judicial body should overrule a previous decision legalizing LGBTQ marriage nationwide and a former ruling that determined criminalizing sodomy is unconstitutional. Thomas issued a concurring opinion with the Supreme Court 's 5 to 4 decision overturning abortion rights as established by Roe v. Wade on Friday. The conservative justice, who was appointed by former Republican President George H.W. Bush , took aim at the Court's 2003 ruling in Lawrence v. Texas and its 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges . Lawrence established that criminal penalties for sodomy or private sexual acts between consenting adults are unconstitutional. That decision came down in a 6 to 3 ruling. Obergefell legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in a 5 to 4 decision. Thomas, who joined the court in 1991, dissented in both the 2003 and 2015 Supreme Court decisions. Biden warns of “dangerous path” as Clarence Thomas eyes gay marriage
President Joe Biden on Friday condemned the ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court that overturns Roe v. Wade while he also criticized comments Justice Clarence Thomas made in his concurring opinion about LGBTQ+ marriage. The president delivered remarks to the nation hours after the court's decision was announced. He decried the ruling, saying it will harm "so many more rights that we've come to take for granted, that are ingrained in the fabric of this country," such as the "right to marry the person you love." "Justice Thomas said as much today. He explicitly called to reconsider the right of marriage equality [and] the right of couples to make their choices on contraception," Biden said, adding that the court is taking the country on an "extreme and dangerous path." The Supreme Court's Friday decision overturns the 1973 ruling on Roe , which protected women who seek an abortion "without undue restrictive interference from the government," guaranteed under the 14th … [Read more...] about Biden warns of “dangerous path” as Clarence Thomas eyes gay marriage
Fact Check: Clarence Thomas and ‘Substantive Due Process’
CLAIM: Justice Clarence Thomas says the Supreme Court will reverse other socially liberal decisions after overturning Roe . VERDICT: MOSTLY FALSE. Thomas wants to end “substantive due process,” but agrees Dobbs only applies to abortion. The long-awaited decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was handed down by the Supreme Court on Friday, and it overturned Roe v. Wade (1973), which had provided a constitutional right to abortion. As Breitbart News has explained, the Dobbs decision is limited to abortion, and would not affect other socially liberal decisions on contraception, gay marriage, and so on — despite what Democratic Party leaders have been saying in an effort to raise the alarm on Dobbs . But a concurring opinion issued by Justice Thomas has set the chattering classes on edge again, repeating past warnings. The widespread assumption was that the Court wouldn’t ever *really* overturn Roe. Clearly that was wrong. The Court’s senior … [Read more...] about Fact Check: Clarence Thomas and ‘Substantive Due Process’
‘Too Dangerous to Vote Republican’: Barstool Sports Chief Dave Portnoy Rips Supreme Court for Overturning Roe v. Wade
On Friday, immediately after the U.S. Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade , Barstool Sport chief Dave Portnoy ripped the decision and exclaimed that Republicans at “too dangerous to vote for” even if people are stuck with voting for “morons” like Joe Biden. Portnoy took to his Twitter account with a video, Friday, to tell his fans that the high court’s Dobbs ruling is “pure insanity.” “We are going backwards in time,” Portnoy exclaimed. “We are literally going backwards in time. It makes no sense how anyone thinks it’s their right to tell a woman what to do with her body. I just don’t get it.” Emergency Press Conference – We Are Going Backwards (avoid if you don’t wanna hear me talking politics) pic.twitter.com/mDTmuQahcc — Dave Portnoy (@stoolpresidente) June 24, 2022 Portnoy said it is “bananas” that the court moved to take away women’s “informed decisions” on how they may lead their lives. He also blasted those who think the whole thing is an important … [Read more...] about ‘Too Dangerous to Vote Republican’: Barstool Sports Chief Dave Portnoy Rips Supreme Court for Overturning Roe v. Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, allowing states to ban abortions
The Supreme Court has ended the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue, in state capitals and in Washington, and Justice Clarence Thomas, part of Friday’s majority, called on the court to overturn other high court rulings protecting same-sex marriage, gay sex and the use of contraceptives. Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism at Its Most Self-Deceptive
It’s happened : Roe v. Wade is overturned . Abortion will soon be illegal in two dozen states . In this country, according to the Supreme Court, women have no constitutional right to control their own bodies . But what really happened? According to the Court’s conservative majority, the Supreme Court is properly exercising its role to interpret the Constitution. As Justice Brett Kavanaugh put it in his concurrence to Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , “the issue before this Court…is not the policy or morality of abortion. The issue before this Court is what the Constitution says about abortion.” And so Justice Samuel Alito’s 79-page opinion carefully and meticulously dissects Roe and explains why there is no “right to abortion” in the Constitution’s explicit language or our “nation’s history and traditions.” But that’s not really what happened, right? We all know, or should know, that Justices Alito, Barrett, Kavanaugh, and Gorsuch were all … [Read more...] about Alito’s ‘Dobbs’ Opinion Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Judicial Activism at Its Most Self-Deceptive
This haunted Scottish castle in the Tenderloin is one of San Francisco’s most unique dive bars
“I actually got stood up here one time,” I tell Tay Kim as I sip a drink at the long old bar inside Edinburgh Castle. Scottish flags dangle from the ceiling and year-round Christmas lights twinkle while Kim stands behind the bar and we trade stories about our decadeslong histories at this fabled Tenderloin dive bar. Even though it's been 17 years and I'm now married, I still remember that indie rock party from 2005 where a girl I had a huge crush on didn't show up, or even bother to leave a message on my Motorola Razr. It’s probably not the first forlorn love story Kim has heard considering he’s been behind the stick at Edinburgh Castle for nearly 30 years. But his history with the place goes even further back than that. When he was 10 years old, long before he bought the place or even worked there, Kim once peeked his head into Edinburgh Castle, thought it was ominous and weird and decided he wanted nothing to do with the place. He had recently moved to the Tenderloin from Korea … [Read more...] about This haunted Scottish castle in the Tenderloin is one of San Francisco’s most unique dive bars
More women would follow MacKenzie Bezos by donating their fortunes. Too bad they can’t make it rich
I’m a few chapters from finishing one of the most compelling books I’ve read in years and I’ve never been more convinced of our desperate need to challenge the thriving patriarchy in everything we do. Caroline Criado Perez’s Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, in the most methodically candid manner, does exactly what its title claims. Using a smorgasbord of examples, the author spells out the brutal extent to which the communities we procreate, live, work and die in are designed to favour men and disadvantage women almost without exception. And in the vast majority of cases, no one's even aware that it's happening. Criado Perez’s theses, though often built around powerful anecdotes, are all anchored meticulously in hard data. Figures on the dimensions of a smart phone, the schedule of a snowplough, the weight of an army pack, the floor space of a public toilet and the toxicity of nail polish remover all help to tell the bleak, enraging story of a … [Read more...] about More women would follow MacKenzie Bezos by donating their fortunes. Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Just the Latest Attack on LGBTQ People
When the draft decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health was leaked, people immediately began asking whether the Supreme Court was coming for LGBTQ rights next . It’s a fair question. Now that the Supreme Court has released its final decision , we know that it maintains the justification from Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion that the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision must be overturned because it relied on rights that are not explicitly mentioned in the Constitution. That reasoning could be used to attack other fundamental rights which rely on the principles that supported the right to abortion—including the right to privacy, the right to access and use contraception, the right to engage in same-sex sexual conduct, the right to be free from sterilization by the government, and even the right to enter an interracial or same-sex marriage. The opinion’s apparent disregard for the concept of stare decisi s—the principle that obligates courts to follow precedent … [Read more...] about Overturning ‘Roe’ Is Just the Latest Attack on LGBTQ People
