Todd Richmond Associated Press Published 12:13 p.m. UTC Jul 11, 2018 Sun Prairie, Wis. – A firefighter was killed and at least a dozen other people were injured when a natural gas explosion leveled at least two buildings in a Wisconsin community, authorities said Wednesday. Another firefighter suffered critical injuries after fire crews arrived to investigate a gas leak in downtown Sun Prairie about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday and several buildings exploded, ignited a fire that sent billowing smoke that could be seen for miles around. Four other firefighters, a police officer and seven civilians suffered injuries, according to Sun Prairie Police Lt. Kevin Konopacki. The firefighter who was critically injured has been stabilized, Konopacki said. Authorities said at an early Wednesday morning news conference that at least six firefighters were injured along with some civilians when a private contractor struck a natural gas main about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Firefighters arrived to investigate the leak and cordon off the area. The buildings exploded a short time later raining debris in the downtown area. The fire resulting from the explosion ignited some cars parked in the area. A plume of smoke could be seen for miles around the community of 30,000 near Madison. Venezuela’s Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said a tear gas device exploded inside the “Los Cotorros” club, where a fight also broke out during a graduation party of about 500 people, Reuters UK reported. The device went off around 3 a.m. during the fight and caused a stampede of people running to the exit, the Interior Minister said on state TV, according to Reuters UK. “The government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, led by President Nicolas Maduro, deplores this unfortunate event. 14 injured in Bandung’s gas explosion
Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - A 3-kilogram gas cylinder exploded at a rented house in the West Java city of Bandung early Wednesday, injuring a total of 14 people, police said. The explosion occurred at around 00.20 WIB (West Indonesia Standard Time) when Acu, one of its occupants returned home from selling sekoteng (ginger-flavored drink), chief of the Kiaracondong police precinct in Bandung city, Commissioner Edwin Devianto said on Wednesday. "Shortly after he put his merchandise in order, he smelt gas odor," he said. Edwin said Acu further looked for the source of gas odor which came from a gas cylinder on his cart. He dipped the gas cylinder in the water and the gas cylinder exploded in a few minutes. "As many as 14 people were injured due to the gas cylinder explosion," Edwin said. The gas explosion also destroyed several parts of the rented house, he said.
