opinion Nancy Kaffer Detroit Free Press Published 8:16 AM EDT May 20, 2019 WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the series finale of "Game of Thrones." If you thought this would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention. But if you thought it would have this ending? Yeah, I didn't either. And yet here we are. I've thought a lot about what makes a series finale satisfying, and this is what I've got: It doesn't have to be what you want, but it should be what the story needs. A series finale that works — think "Cheers," or "The Shield," or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" — should feel authentic to the story that has preceded it, and to the characters who have populated it. Did this hit the mark? Eh. More analysis: That 'Game of Thrones' ending was a disaster In Game of Thrones' penultimate episode, Daenerys Targaryen finally marched on King's Landing, the capital city of Westeros and the kingdom's literal seat of … [Read more...] about ‘Game of Thrones’ finale is over. Adam Graham The Detroit News Published 8:00 PM EDT May 10, 2019 I haven’t done the homework, but I’m cramming for the final exam. Sunday nights when it comes time for “Game of Thrones,” I am locked into HBO. Wanna talk about it? I, too, found the Battle of Winterfell several shades too dark. Arya Stark is a total badass. The coffee cup meme? I laughed, too. Just don’t ask me too much about what any of it means. Before this season, I had never watched the show. It always felt too daunting to try and catch up. But since “Game of Thrones” is the absolute center of the pop culture conversation, I am watching without context, just to be able to keep up. We all want to belong.
