With the price of petrol being more than ₹100 in the State, the popularity of battery vehicles have been growing steadily in the city. The sales of battery-operated two-wheelers have grown tremendously ever since people started favouring personal vehicles over public transportation owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Commissioner of Transport and Road Safety, which is the nodal authority for keeping tabs of the number of vehicles being registered in the State, has recorded that a total of 22,133 battery-operated vehicles have been sold till June. A senior official said of the total, 19,986 were two-wheelers and 2,147 were other types of three- and four-wheelers. A number of companies, both established and new, have been launching a range of two-wheelers in the battery-operated segments, attracting a section of customers. However, the battery-operated vehicles have also raised safety concerns. The growth in demand for battery-operated vehicles can be attributed to them drastically … [Read more...] about As fuel prices soar, sales of e-vehicles pick up

Fuel thefts up 61% as pump prices keep climbing
Fuel thefts from UK filling stations have reached record levels amid soaring pump prices. PRA executive director Gordon Balmer described the number of thefts as “going through the roof” with “10 incidents a day” being reported. Retailers will lose £25 million if the current rate of drive-offs continues for the next 12 months, he said. Sri Lanka runs out of fuel, comes to a near-standstill
Cash-strapped Sri Lanka suspended nationwide fuel sales, except for essential services, for nearly a fortnight as the island faces a rapidly worsening economic crisis. In a press conference held on Monday night, Cabinet spokesperson and Transport Minister Bandula Gunawardana said private vehicles will be barred from buying fuel until July 10, after which the government has promised to ensure the usual supply. Authorities halted bus services between provinces and urged citizens to work from home in a bid to save fuel. Schools also remain shut. “Fuel will be issued only to health, defence, power and export sectors from midnight today until July 10,” Mr. Bandula Gunawardena told reporters. The state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) will issue diesel and petrol only for essential services with effect from midnight, he said. These services include ports, airports, health, food distribution and agriculture. As fuel shortages intensified over the past couple of weeks, Sri … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka runs out of fuel, comes to a near-standstill

Increasing U.S. oil production could set climate efforts back decades
While several Republican lawmakers have called on President Joe Biden to increase domestic energy production in the wake of rising gas prices, energy experts warn that doing so could be detrimental to climate action goals that the U.S. is already not living up to. As of June 30, the American Automobile Association reported that the average price for gas sat at nearly $4.857 per gallon across the nation, leading some members of Congress to blame the Biden administration's "war on American energy" and restrictive policies for oil companies. But climate activists and progressives argue against the call to increase domestic production of oil, saying that doing so could undermine the president's climate-focused agenda and calls for transition to cleaner energy. Samantha Gross, director of the Energy Security and Climate Initiative at the Brookings Institution, told Newsweek that the two sides put Biden in a "real pickle" and that any policies moving forward will require a … [Read more...] about Increasing U.S. oil production could set climate efforts back decades
Soaring inflation to hit Britain harder than any other major economy, BoE warns
Soaring inflation will hit Britain harder than any other major economy during the current energy crisis, the governor of the Bank of England has warned. Andrew Bailey said the UK’s economy would likely weaken earlier and be more intense than others as a result of the energy price shock that all European economies face. The situation was further exacerbated in Britain by the “structural legacy” left by Covid in the labour market as companies struggled with a lack of workers. “Unfortunately, there is going to be a further step-up in UK inflation later this year because that’s a product of the way the energy price cap interacts with the energy prices we have observed over the last few months,” Mr Bailey told a European Central Bank (ECB) conference in Sintra, Portugal , on Wednesday. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator “I think the UK economy is probably weakening rather earlier and somewhat more than … [Read more...] about Soaring inflation to hit Britain harder than any other major economy, BoE warns
Soaring inflation sees household incomes fall for record four quarters in a row
Household finances failed to keep up with soaring inflation once again at the start of the year, marking the first time real disposable income has fallen for four quarters in a row since records began, according to official figures. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said real household disposable income dropped 0.2% between January and March as income growth of 1.5% was outstripped by household inflation of 1.7%. Household finances have now been under pressure for a straight year, with rising prices amid the cost-of-living crisis meaning income after inflation has fallen for a record four consecutive quarters. The latest figures came as the ONS confirmed its earlier estimation that gross domestic product (GDP) – a measure of the size of the economy – rose by 0.8% in the first quarter of the year. Recommended Over £130m handed to housing providers named and shamed by regulator This marked a decline in growth from 1.3% in the previous … [Read more...] about Soaring inflation sees household incomes fall for record four quarters in a row
Economic recovery starting to falter as cost of living bites, experts warn
Recovery from the pandemic by Scottish businesses is starting to falter, economic experts have warned. Strathclyde University’s Fraser of Allander Institute made the statement on Thursday as it scaled down its forecast for economic growth in 2023, with the cost-of-living crisis taking a toll on both companies and consumers. The think tank said it now expects growth of 0.5% next year, instead of the 1.5% it previously forecast, due to the impact of rising costs and the likelihood that they will persist for longer than first predicted. In its latest quarterly economic commentary report, the institute said consumers are starting to modify their spending behaviour in response to the ongoing crisis, with more than half reporting they are spending less on non-essential items. A further third of consumers said they are now spending less on essential items such as food and fuel, while the cost of properties is seeing a significant increase.
